The new audit questionnaire features a number of environmental concerns including mitigating the excessive use of plastic bags, encouraging the recycling of electronic waste and reducing food wastage. These new topics will be incorporated into the School Green Awards booklet, alongside topics such as green transport and green lifestyle tips. The multilingual booklet has an estimated 1.4 million readers and aims to inculcate positive actions both at school and at home.
Based on the score generated by the questionnaire, schools are eligible for one out of the four awards – the Palm, Hibiscus, Orchid, or the top level, Lotus Award. Schools that receive the Lotus Award for at least three consecutive years will be honored with the Lotus Sustained Achievement Award.
It is intended for all students including those from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL), which includes local and private universities, polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITE). Since 2013, schools for students with special needs and pre-schools too, are also eligible to participate in the SGA.
SGA is organized by the Singapore Environment Council’s (SEC) and supported by a number of private and public institutions. The objective of the SGA is to educate students about environmental mitigation efforts.
The application deadline for this year's SGA is September 30, 2014 and the awards ceremony will take place on 4 November 4, 2014.
