Event - 2013 Annual National Environmental, Energy And Resources Law Summit

The 2013 Annual National Environmental, Energy And Resources Law Summit will take place on Thursday Jun 20 to Fri Jun 21, in Yellowknife, NT. at The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. This summit is set against the backdrop of Canada’s arctic region. This engaging program is designed to provide private practitioners, in-house corporate and government counsel, regulators, and other professionals with an annual update on the hottest issues in the environmental, energy and resources law field.

Canada’s economy increasingly revolves around projects devoted to the extraction of its natural resources and the production of energy. As resource extraction projects gain attention, so too does the role of lawyers in the field. More and more, lawyers are advising clients and appearing before courts and tribunals on matters such as the environmental assessment of mining projects, the development of renewable energy generation projects, and the intersecting Aboriginal consultation process and accommodation issues.

This program will feature leading experts and practitioners discussing legal regimes and challenges associated with resource extraction projects such as mining and oil and gas extraction, spanning both north and south of 60. Substantive topics will address off-shore resource development, natural gas extraction, environmental assessment issues, renewable energy, streamlining regulatory processes, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility. Participants will gain a better understanding of how this burgeoning area is unfolding on the international, national, and local levels. This is a premier program with an added northern lens – not to be missed given the natural resource development opportunities north of 60.

Summit attendees are welcome to attend the NEERLS full-day business meeting on June 22. This is a terrific opportunity to get to know the NEERLS executive, to learn more about section activities, and to get involved!

Event on Energy Security: Military Procurement of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects and Technologies

This event sponsored by AGRION will take place on Thursday, January 17th 2012 9:30am- 12:30pm ET. A streamed Panel Discussion is scheduled for 7:00am - 9:00am PT / 10:00am - 12:00pm ET / 16:00 - 18:00 (Paris-Frankfurt).

At AGRION’s US Offshore Wind: Benchmarks and Bellwethers roundtable, Bill Shore, CFO of Fishermen’s Energy, stated that federal procurement of renewables would top his policy wishlist for the Obama administration. With the announcement of the Energy Initiatives Task Force, which aims to fund projects and emerging technologies, this will soon be a reality. The US Army has a $7 billion budget, and is looking to be a third party investor in renewable energy projects and alternative energy technologies, which encompass micro-grid, energy storage, and fuel cell technologies.

US Army has a $7 billion budget for solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and other alternative energy technologies that it will use to reach its many energy efficiency and clean energy targets such as 3 gigawatts of renewable energy generation by 2025.

In this meeting, we will convene military officials, policymakers, renewable energy technology providers, and more to discuss the evolution of the military’s renewable energy procurement program, and its long term energy goals.

Questions that will be Answered

  • What segment of the military is most energy consumptive?
  • Where can the biggest impact be made?
  • What emerging alternative technologies is the Department of Defense looking at?
  •  Will the 30 year PPA’s be extended to solar and wind projects?

Sustainable Jersey Certification Program for Municipalities (Event)

The "Sustainable Jersey Fall Networking Event" will take place on October 23, 2012 at 6:30 pm at Careme's Restaurant in Atlantic Cape Community College Campus 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing.
The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) invites towns and interested members of the public to this event.

The honorable Dr. Ed Mahaney Jr., Mayor of Cape May City, will be the guest speaker and will share his experience leading his community to a more sustainable future. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey interested in taking steps to sustain the quality of life for residents. Sustainable Jersey identifies concrete actions that municipalities can implement to become "certified" and be considered leaders on the path to a sustainable community.

While the program provides extensive guidance and tools to help towns complete the actions needed for certification, the certification process is comprehensive and rigorous, and may be seen as a daunting task.
This event is intended to offer people a chance to talk with other community leaders about their successes and challenges on the path to certification as a sustainable community through this program. Collaboration is the key and this informal evening offers opportunities to connect with experienced groups and individuals for support and information.

With 376 towns registered and 109 certified across the state, there is a lot of collective knowledge about the program and successful certification. Certified communities, large and small, possess a wealth of experience that can benefit other towns moving towards this common goal.

The cost to attend is $10 and includes a dinner featuring local seasonal food prepared by the Atlantic Cape Community College Culinary Institute.

Environmental Remediation Conference International 2012 (Event)

On September 27-28, 2012 in Tobermory, Ontario Terratechnik Environmental Ltd will offer its 1st Remediation Conference to be held in Tobermory, one of the most beautiful and rugged waterscapes that you will find in the world.

Tobermory is a haven for divers, hikers (top end of the Bruce Trail), boaters, photographers, birders and naturalists. The Tobermory is a unique location for a conference as it gives up the concrete, asphalt and 5 star hotels and offers 5 (possible 10) star scenery and 3 star accommodations. A good trade off in our estimation.
The Environmental Conference will deal with remediation technologies from a scientific aspect rather than the run of the mill infomercials that we have all endured. The speakers from the podiums are to deal with the issues of present and past remediation challenges as well as the new and emerging technologies.

There will also be three panel discussions with audience participation which will deal with specific issues that are problematic to the remediation processes we all have to deal with on a daily basis. The purpose of the conference is to gain knowledge of technologies and deal with problems that plague us on a daily basis and come away with answers through networking. Networking will be a key effort as well with this seminar and Thursday evening will be reserved for this endeavor.

Women's Congress for Future Generations (Event)

A Women’s Congress for Future Generations will gather in Moab, Utah September 27th-30th, 2012, to celebrate and express gratitude for the Earth’s wondrous bounty, and to fulfill the special responsibility that women hold as the first environment for future generations. They will map possibilities and pathways toward achieving whole health and justice in this generation and for all generations to come. Inspired by our environmental foremothers, their hope is to craft a dynamic articulation of the pressing rights future generations have to a livable world and the responsibilities of present generations to uphold those rights.

Questions that will be addressed include:

What are the sacred rights of future generations and the responsibilities of present generations?

How might we most powerfully write, craft, sing, pray, dream, speak, and legislate these rights and visions into being?

What might a civil rights movement for future generations look like? What does such a movement need?

What does reclaiming power as women look like? How might women organize on behalf of future generations in ways that transcend traditional strategies of action/resistance, and that honor, embody, and translate the sacred feminine spirit into the realm of direct political and social action?

This Congress is for those called to stand for Future Generations. They seek solidarity with those working for environmental justice, for Climate Justice, for indigenous sovereignty, for the health of women and children, and with those living on the frontlines of the struggle against industrial pollution and climate change.

Women from across the diverse spectrum of womanhood are welcome—women of all ages and cultural groups, women from all places, backgrounds, and walks of life, women with diverse talents and interests, vocal leaders, and those still finding their voice. They invite men to participate in the Congress, too, as Sacred Witnesses who honor and empower women's voices.

Their commitment is to work that is firmly rooted in Radical Inclusion, in all of its forms -- not as an afterthought, but as a framework for how we come together and organize. They recognize the double layer of oppression for women of color, Indigenous women, lesbians, transgender individuals, and women living on the frontlines of the environmental and social struggle. This is our inquiry and the exploration we intend to deepen with the launch of our Congress. They endeavor to foresee and address barriers that might otherwise diminish the fullest and most diverse gathering of women, and they welcome creative strategies to overcome these barriers and, in the coming months, to carry forward this work in ways that draw strength and wisdom from an ever-widening circle of women.

In this vein, all are welcome, but they recognize that only a fraction of those who feel called to this gathering are privileged enough to mobilize the time and resources to convene in Moab. Women who need assistance and support to attend are encouraged to register and apply for scholarships to defray travel expenses. Young women, students, women of color, indigenous women, women from low income communities, and women from fence-line communities are especially encouraged to attend. They encourage those who can donate funds, airline miles, or accommodations to do so, in an effort to support those for whom it is financially difficult to travel to Moab.

They hope all of you who feel called to speak for Future Generations will join them in their broader work to uphold their rights, even if you cannot make the trip to Moab. They invite you to gather wherever you may be, creating, drafting a declaration in parallel and acting from within your own community. They also encourage you to send testimony or its equivalent ahead of the Congress to be folded into the proceedings, and to participate in the declarations and actions to follow. Also please consider sharing what has already been written or created by kindred women or organizations, or at previous gatherings where the right of Future Generations and the responsibilities of present generations has been deliberated.

This Congress is but one conversation in a continuum -- one that we wish to deepen through word, art and action. Women have long cast their concern forward. Conversations about Future Generations preceded this Congress. And there are important conversations going on in parallel. They hope to begin the process of mapping and knitting together this wisdom, and in the future, harnessing crowdsource technology to connect, to continue these conversations, and to ammend and ratify a living Declaration of the Rights of Future Generations. Their offerings will be open-ended, striving to map and knit together the wisdom of all of those who feel called to take a stand for Future Generations. They will be released into the world like seeds on the wind, where we hope they might intermingle with ongoing dialogues about our relationship to future generations, and be adapted and amended and then, again and again, cast into the world. Their sincerest hope is that we play a role in transforming public dialogue and collective action to ensure that those who come after us inherit a just and livable future.
