Event - 24 Reasons for Hope

This event calls each one of us to do our part to combat the climate crisis. We have to get beyond the dire scientific predictions warning us about rising seas and devastating drought. It is time for hope, time for us to realize that we have a choice to do something about the climate crisis. It is time for us to act. This movement encourages people to "dedicate a day for action." This can include anything from voting to marching to speaking out in your community.

As explained by Al Gore, the Founder and Chairman of The Climate Reality Project, Twenty-Four Hours to Change the World is about making a difference at this pivotal time in human history."

"It’s time to stand up and stop climate change. It’s time to turn the solutions we have into the clean energy future we want."

One of the most important things we can do is transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable sources of energy. This point is being driven home by the declining costs of renewables and the growing awareness of the dangers associated with fossil fuels. We are at a turning point in human history where clean energy goes mainstream. All that we need to bring this ambition to fruition is popular support and political will.

Make sure you listen in on the signature 24 Hours of Reality global broadcast which is taking place on September 16—17, 24 Hours of Reality: 24 Reasons for Hope.

This broadcast will celebrate the innovation and progress in climate solutions happening all across the planet. Hosted by former Vice President Al Gore, each hour will highlight a new milestone and reason to be hopeful about solving the climate crisis; from the smart growth strategies now guiding cities everywhere to the ways renewables are helping to increase energy access and combat poverty for millions.

To tell these success stories, the will feature presentations from Vice President Gore, conversations with cultural icons and activists like Mark Ruffalo and Wanjira Mathai, reports from the field, and town hall-style discussions with audience members like you. In between, musical performances from artists like Jack Johnson, Colbie Calliat, and Jason Mraz give hope a lively beat.

The program will kickstart a year of concerted action as each hour invites viewers to dedicate a day in the following 12 months to making a difference and working for climate solutions. The idea is to get millions of people around the world to act on climate change. These efforts will occur against the backdrop of negotiations by world leaders who are working on a new framework for global action.

Drawing Inspiration from Environmentalists who have Gone Before Us

As we continue to hope for the birth of a new era of environmental responsibility, we can draw inspiration from those who have gone before us and done so much to move us forward. Here are the abbreviated biographies of six environmentalists who invested their lives into the noblest of noble causes.

Judy Bonds

The anti-mountaintop removal mining activist, Judy Bonds, died in 2011 at the age of 58. Judy was an engaging speaker who inspired many people to get involved with efforts to protect mountains from mining. She was a powerful public speaker who had an awe inspiring capacity to rally people around the cause. One of her greatest accomplishments involved a 2010 march in which thousands protested in front of the White House for “Appalachia Rising.”

Rebecca Tarbotton

The executive director of San Francisco-based environmental group Rainforest Action Network, Rebecca Tarbotton died in 2012 at the age of 39. Becky, as her friends called her, was well known for protecting forests, working to move the country off of fossil fuels and defending human rights through bold, effective, and innovative environmental corporate campaigns. Rainforest Action Network works with major corporations on environmental projects, and Tarbotton recently brokered an agreement with the Walt Disney Company that changed the way the entertainment giant uses paper.

Norman Borlaug

A man called the “Father of the Green Revolution,” Norman Borlaug (1914-2009), would have turned 100 on March 25th (National Agriculture Day). He was a stalwart promoter of agricultural science and the recipient of many awards including the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Medal of Science. He brought together genetics, fertility, and water to make major contributions to the science of agriculture. His work on agricultural practices increased food production around the world and are thought to have helped to save at least a billion lives since the 1950s. Borlaug was a great communicator who was able to converse with scientists, politicians and farmers.

David Sive

One of the founders of environmental law, David Sive, died on March 12 at the age of 91. This university professor argued precedent-setting cases including the Storm King Mountain case. He helped establish a number of environmental advocacy groups long before it was fashionable. A past chairman of the Atlantic chapter of the Sierra Club, he was also a founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Law Institute, Friends of the Earth and Environmental Advocates of New York, and many other groups. Although his efforts focused on the Northeastern U.S., he worked to preserve wild areas across the country from pollution and development.

Peter Matthiessen

Leading environmentalist and wilderness writer, Peter Matthiessen, died on April 5 at the age of 86. Matthiessen worked to protect and preserve nature. In “Wildlife in America,” his first nonfiction book, he labels man “the highest predator” and one uniquely prone to self-destruction. Matthiessen became a Zen Buddhist in the 1960s, and was later a Zen priest.

Farley Mowat

Prolific writer, environmentalist and wilderness advocate, Farley Mowat, died on May 6 at the age of 92. During the course of his literary career he penned a number of novels that eloquently speak to the overarching value of the natural world. The environmental themes that permeate his 40 books have global appeal and his writings have been translated into more than 20 languages. For almost 80 years, Mowat was a passionate nature advocate. Although he won many awards, his lasting legacy may be as a man who helped us to learn to live in harmony with the natural world. If we fail to heed his teachings, he may be remembered as one of the people who tried desperately to pull us back from the brink of our own self destruction.

Storytellers like Mowat and Matthiessen weaved a narrative that transformed people’s world view. Sive started many environmental groups and set important ground breaking legal precedents. Borlaug put science to work to feed the world. Tarbotton and Bonds were environmental advocates who started movements that have created lasting change.

These six people employed their differing skill sets and individual areas of focus, to change the world for the better, each in their own unique way. They demonstrate that regardless of our areas of expertise, people of diverse abilities can apply their talents to the important work of environmental advocacy. For each well known environmentalist, there are countless thousands whose names may not be recorded by history, but who have tirelessly worked to defend nature for posterity.

Direct Action Camp - How to Peacefully Protest (Greenpeace)

On March 23-28 Greenpeace is facilitating a direct action camp in Phoenix, Arizona that teaches people how to creatively and peacefully protest while connecting with activists from all over the US. We need to see movement on an number of fronts including climate change and other environmental issues. No organization has more experience or is better equipped to instruct people about how to peacefully protest than Greenpeace.

Participants will learn a number of valuable and exciting skills related to advocacy. Specifically they can learn about climbing, boating, arts, blockades, research and even how to protest using an airship. These are just some of the offerings at Greenpeace’s non-violent direct action camp this year in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

Action camp starts with folks from all walks of life coming together, honoring diversity, and working across difference. They come together to learn and share skills in support of the growing movements, campaigns, and communities working toward a common goal-– a just and equitable existence for all.

Greenpeace is delighted to participate, and is working hard to make it a safe and inclusive space for all. However, we’re merely facilitating. We need you to make it happen. This is your camp, after all.

Four Leading Chinese Environmental Activists

In a recent interview Ralph Litzinger, a Duke Univeristy anthropologist who writes about important Chinese issues, offered his list of notable environmental activists in China. His list includes Ma Jun, Li Bo, Liu Jianqiang and Feng Yongfeng.

Ma Jun and his Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing have been doing extraordinary pollution mapping work in China, and have created a network of environmental activists around what they call the “Green Choice Alliance.” They were instrumental in the first reports to expose the links between Apple and its suppliers’ environmental and health record in factories across China.

Li Bo recently stepped down as director of Friends of Nature. He remains deeply involved in a range of environmental justice struggles in China, from toxic waste to energy politics and dam building in west China.

Liu Jianqiang is a journalist turned activists. He recently gave talks in the United States to different audiences in New York and Washington D.C., so his voice and perspective is now getting the attention it deserves, and he has a very important essay, “Defending Tiger Leaping Gorge.”

Feng Yongfeng, a journalist and founder of the organization Green Beagle, is one of the most tireless environmental activists working in China today. His work too rarely gets read or acknowledged in the western press.

Video - Homage to Environmental Pioneer Rachel Carson

To celebrate Earth Day 2013 Open Road Media honored Rachel Carson. "Miss Carson, you are the lady who started all this." said Senator Abraham Ribicoff, to Rachel Carson as she testified before congress in 1963 Indeed she did.  Carson's message that we must hold a sense of responsibility to the natural world speaks to us still, inspiring us all to greater awareness of our impact on the planet we inhabit. “I think Rachel Carson was one of the most important writers of our time,” says author and leading marine conservationist Richard Ellis. Carson dedicated her life to celebrating the natural world, whether it meant taking readers to the depths of the ocean with books such as The Sea Around Us or awakening the American public to the dangers of pesticides with Silent Spring. Her impact is felt to this day, and she is widely recognized as the mother of the environmental movement.
