Obama's and Romney's Energy Advisers: A Study in Contrasts

As reviewed in an article by Elisa Wood , there is a profound difference between President Obama's energy advisor and Republican nominee Mitt Romney's energy advisor. Harold Hamm is part of team Romney while Heather Zichal is in Obama's camp.

Hamm made his fortune from oil, his academic qualifications consist of little more than a high school diploma. By contrast, Zichal has worked as an intern for the Sierra Club while at Rutgers University. Her meteoric rise in Washington's policy ranks took a little over a decade.

Hamm is the chairman and CEO of Continental Resources and one of the richest men in America. He is an enthusiastic supporter of more oil and gas drilling, or as he refers to it, an "American renaissance." Hamm wants to less federal regulation and he wants to give states more say in environmental regulation. Hamm does not believe that the federal government should be involved in environmental regulation.

Zichal is a 36-year-old Iowa native is known for welcoming views and inviting the opinion of others. "She is collaborative to a 'T'," said Melinda Pierce, lead lobbyist for the Sierra Club, where Zichal worked as an intern while studying environmental policy at Rutgers University. After graduating from Rutgers in 1999, Zichal worked as an aide on Capitol Hill and she also served as top energy and environmental adviser for Kerry's 2004 presidential bid.

Zichal has worked with Obama since his inauguration and she became deputy assistant for energy and climate change in early 2011. She is described as a savvy political strategist with a quick intellect and deep grasp of the often complex energy world. Some claim that Zichal had a role in Obama's fuel economy standards and restrictions on mercury emissions from power plants.

Zichal has been an advocate of climate change legislation and cap and trade. "Pricing carbon throughout the economy creates the incentive for small entrepreneurs and multinational corporations alike to seek out and exploit the lowest cost ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions," she told the Business Council for Sustainable Energy in October 2009.

More recently she has been focusing on extending the wind production tax credit, set to expire at the end of this year. Zichal is on record supporting cuts to oil subsidies and energy efficiency. Although she is an advocate of renewable energy she also supports natural gas.

A Vote for Obama is a Vote for Survival

This may be the most important election in US history. There are two clear and distinct paths going forward, the choice Amercans make today will reverberate around the world and define the future. For anyone who sees the value of the environment or who understands the crucial importance of developing clean energy the choice is obvious.

President Obama has been endorsed by the Sierra Club, Environment America, the League of Conservation Voters, and Clean Water Action. In addition the President has recieved endorsements from Mayor Bloomberg, Colin Powell, Gov. Cuomo, and even Gov Christie.

There is no guarantee that a vote for Obama will succeed in staving off the worst effects of climate change, but it is the best shot we have to protect our planet. We know that a vote for Mitt Romney will increase America's dependence on fossil fuels while decreasing clean energy. A vote for the Republicans will also undermine decades of environmental protections. It is not overstating the case to say a vote for Romney risks runaway climate change which could result in death on a planetary scale.

The Citizens United supreme court decision has enabled the fossil fuel industry to spend 158 million dollars trying to buy this election and continue their reign of terror on the environment. Despite considerable resistance and misinformation from Republicans, President Obama has done a great deal for the environment and the economy. He has rescued America from the failed economic policies of his Republican predecessor.

Republicans resisted Obama's stimulus which included 175 billion in green investment. Under Obama the US economy has grown for 15 consecutive months adding 171,000 jobs in October alone. The unemployment rate has fallen below 8 percent for the first time since the GOP's emphasis on deregulation created the worst recession since the great depression. President Obama has not only helped to create jobs, he has been a champion of good green jobs.

For their part Republicans continue to preach the same failed economic rhetoric that created this crisis in the first place. They have resisted the President's environmental initiatives and they have openly declared war on climate science.

Hurricane Sandy, like Hurricane Irene and the Tornadoes in 2011 have made it clear that there are devastating costs to climate change. Rather than decrease anthropogenic causes of extreme weather or help individuals impacted by these events, Republicans want to privatize FEMA and increase America's consumption of fossil fuels.

For the sake of your children, for the sake of your grandchildren and for your own sake vote for Obama. Vote for clean air, vote for clean water, vote for a living planet. Although Republicans like to talk about jobs and the economy, there is no work on a dead planet.

Voting to reelect President Obama is crucial because we simply cannot afford to have Mitt Romney in the White House.

Here are five things Americans can do to help secure an Obama victory:

1. Tell your friends on Facebook in battleground states to make their voices heard.

2. Sign up to help get out the vote.

3. Call voters in key states.

4. Go vote—and bring a neighbor (or five). Confirm where you'll vote.

5. Then help spread the word—let everyone know you voted, and ask them to do the same.

Of all the things that Americans can do this election day the most important single thing is to vote. To find out where you can vote click here.

Republican Gov. Christie Embraces President Obama

Republican Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie’s public embrace of Mr. Obama reverberated across the country. Gov. Christie said that President Obama deserves "great credit" for his response to Hurricane Sandy, during an appearance on "CBS This Morning" Tuesday.

"I can't thank the president enough for that," Christie said, referring to the major disaster declaration Obama signed for New Jersey, expediting federal aid to the state. "Cooperation from the president of the United States has been outstanding. He deserves great credit."

Whether Christie's comments are attributable to being beyond partisanship or a function of his own presidential aspirations is a matter of considerable speculation. Regardless of his motivation, Christie's remarks serve as a virtual endorsement of President Obama's reelection bid for 2012.

Climate Change is One of the Reasons Colin Powell Endorses President Obama

Prominent Republican Colin Powell and former secretary of state under President George W. Bush, has endorsed President Obama for re-election in 2012. Powell is a retired four-star general, he was formally chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush and he was also national security advisor under former President Ronald Reagan.

President Obama's position on climate change is one of the reasons Powell cited for his endorsement. Other reasons include the economy, foreign policy, defense, education, immigration, and health care.

At a rally in Richmond, Virginia, President Obama welcomed the endorsement, saying:

"I was proud and humbled to learn that we have Colin Powell's support in this campaign. I'm grateful to him for his lifetime of service to his country both as a soldier and as a diplomat," he told the crowd.

Powell also criticized Romney's inconsistencies on foreign affairs, economic policy and defense.

Hurricane Sandy Prompts Gov. Cuomo and Other Democrats to Speak Out on Climate Change

The horrendous impact of Hurricane Sandy is putting climate change back on the political radar just ahead of election day. A growing number of politicians are speaking out on the need for public policy that addresses the impacts of extreme weather events caused by climate change.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York has been traveling across the country stumping for President Obama. “It’s a longer conversation,” Cuomo said at a press briefing last Wednesday. “But I think part of learning from this is the recognition that climate change is a reality, extreme weather is a reality, it is a reality that we are vulnerable.

As reported in the New York Times, last Tuesday Gov. Cuomo said, “Anyone who says there is not a dramatic change in weather patterns I think is denying reality.”

Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said last Wednesday, “We’re going to pay a price for the change in climate.” And Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of Manhattan, echoed the consensus of local officials last Thursday, saying simply, “There will be a storm of this magnitude again.”

References to climate change are an implicit endorsement of President Obama's re-election bid in 2012. Obama is clearly the greener of the two candidates. If Romney wins the 2012 presidential election on November 6, he would ignore climate change and his emphasis on fossil fuels would almost certainly increase climate change causing greenhouse gases.

Citing Climate Change Mayor Bloomberg Endorses President Obama

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Michael Bloomberg has endorsed President Obama. Bloomberg's endorsement is significant because in addition to being a business leader, he was the first Republican governor of New Jersey, and he is now the conservative independent mayor of New York City. Although Bloomberg has been critical of both candidates, he indicated that President Obama was the better candidate to tackle the global climate change.

“The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast — in lost lives, lost homes and lost business — brought the stakes of next Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief,” Mr. Bloomberg wrote in an editorial for Bloomberg View.

“Our climate is changing,” he wrote. “And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it may be — given the devastation it is wreaking — should be enough to compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.”

Prior to Sandy Mayor Bloomberg indicated that he had not decided who he would vote for, he further indicated that he was not likely to share his decision publicly. It appears Bloomberg could not countenance a Romney administration that would enact policies that would actively make climate change worse.

Mr. Bloomberg is the chairman of an organization called C40, a network of cities seeking to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

In support of his decision to endorse Obama, Bloomberg said:

"When I step into the voting booth, I think about the world I want to leave my two daughters, and the values that are required to guide us there. The two parties’ nominees for president offer different visions of where they want to lead America...One sees climate change as an urgent problem that threatens our planet; one does not. I want our president to place scientific evidence and risk management above electoral politics."

Obama welcomed the endorsement saying: "While we may not agree on every issue, Mayor Bloomberg and I agree... that climate change is a threat to our children's future, and we owe it to them to do something about it."
