The US Government says within 100 days it will co-host, alongside companies of the Consumer Goods Forum, a Partnership Dialogue in Washington DC. This US Government announcement concerns companies of the Consumer Goods Forum, representing more than 400 companies and brands operating with combined annual revenues of over US$3.1 trillion, to support the Forum's pledge to achieve zero net deforestation in their supply chains by 2020.

“Individually both governments and business have already mobilized significant resources to address the challenge of deforestation but we all recognize that much more can be achieved if we align our efforts and work in partnership,” said Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever.

The US Government invited other countries, companies, and civil society leaders to join the effort to develop joint policy recommendations and an action plan to promote sustainable food production, while also protecting and conserving forests.

“I am so pleased to see the United States Government and major companies beginning to take a leadership role in protecting the environment. We environmentalists can only do so much. It truly takes all of us working together to heal the planet,” said Jane Goodall, co-Chair of the event.

“The private sector needs to put people and the planet at the center of all we do,” said Richard Branson, CEO of the Virgin Group. “Together we need to face critical challenges, including finding ways to harness and protect our natural assets—including the last remaining tropical forests. The planet won’t wait.”

Ted Turner, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the second largest landowner in the United States, also voiced support. “The message of this event is very timely. Our land-based resources are dwindling, and so we must be responsible stewards by reducing wasteful consumption and agricultural practices and promoting sustainable uses that protect the environment while continuing to feed growing populations,” he said.

Jeff Horowitz, founder of Avoided Deforestation Partners who organized the event was “extremely pleased to see governments and corporations make such extraordinary commitments”. He added, “We believe this partnership can be a game changer with the potential to transform how we grow our food, fuel and fiber, with immediate and dramatic effects on efforts to slow, halt and reverse deforestation.”

Top CSR Initiatives for 2012

Many organizations that practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) are expanding their reach in 2012. Corporations are increasingly seeing the value of environmental sustainability. In addition to making more environmentally responsible decisions in 2012, organizations are realizing the value of working with others to achieve their goals and fulfill their CSR potential. Here are some CSR initiatives for 2012.

Become more sustainable: Review your organization and then develop a strategy to do things like become more energy efficient, generate less waste, increase recycling rates, engage employee behavior and support environmental efforts outside of the workplace.

Support Environmental Events: Be part of environmental initiatives by celebrating events that take place throughout the year. Raise consciousness by incorporating these efforts into your marketing and throughout your organization. You can even start your own environmental oriented initiatives which you can in turn share with everyone in your value chain.

Engagement and Alignment: Engage your employees, consumers and other stakeholders by asking them what they want to see from your program objectives. Align your objectives with the results of your engagement efforts and build loyalty by inculcating these values.

Grassroots Involvement: Get the general public involved with your efforts. Ask for their views and develop local programs that respond to their concerns.

Transparency: In an attempt to proactively engage the perception of inappropriate conduct, open your organization up to public scrutiny and review.

Be a Catalyst for Prosocial Change: Find a problematic issue and develop a strategy to help improve the situation. Educate people and encourage them to contribute.

Energy Efficiency: Obama's American Jobs Act and the Green Schools Program

President Obama's American Jobs Act, and programs like Green Schools, leverage efficiency initiatives to make America greener and stronger. In addition to being cost effective, energy efficiency is the quickest way of reducing electric power consumption.

President Obama’s American Jobs Act would modernize schools across the country by making them more energy efficient. This will save energy and reduce the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels. It will also create jobs while saving money.

The President’s proposed $25 billion investment in school infrastructure to modernize at least 35,000 public schools will include funds for “greening and energy efficiency upgrades,” according to a White House fact sheet.

“Energy efficiency upgrades are an essential component of the president’s plan to create jobs by making substantial investments in our nation’s school buildings, some in communities with the highest needs,” said Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan. “In many schools, energy costs are second only to personnel costs and can far exceed what is spent on textbooks, other supplies and activities critical to learning.”

The Alliance to Save Energy, Green Schools Program educates students about energy and the importance of energy efficiency, as well as trained to use a diagnostic toolkit that assesses the energy usage in their school. The school building becomes a learning lab for students to apply science, math and even language arts to solve a global problem.

Through basic changes in operations, maintenance and individual behavior, schools participating in the Green Schools Program have achieved reductions in energy use of 5 to 15 percent. In addition, the Green Schools Program encourages and equips students to promote the lessons of energy efficiency in their homes and communities.

"Green Schools offer K-12 students high-quality learning opportunities by integrating energy efficiency information into their science, math and language arts curricula." Callahan said. “They aren’t just conserving energy at school, they are learning how to be lifelong stewards of energy savings."

The Alliance to Save Energy indicate that schools can save as much as 15% through no-cost, student-initiated behavior and operations changes. Schools are an ideal context for these efforts because, as noted by Callahan, these energy efficiency lessons are taken out of the classroom and into the wider community.

If passed, the American Jobs Act will partner seamlessly with the Green Schools Program to further efficiency and promote invaluable learning opportunities.
