Event - Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport Forum

The Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport Forum, is subtitled the future for the Green Deal: engagement, integration and tackling fuel poverty, will take place on March 24, 2014, at Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, UK. A year on from the official launch of the Green Deal, this seminar will provide a timely opportunity to review progress and consider the way forward for the scheme in the context of the government's wider energy efficiency strategy

Guest of Honour: David Thomas, Deputy Director, Green Deal Demand, Department of Energy and Climate Change.

A year on from the official launch of the Green Deal, this seminar will provide a timely opportunity to review progress and consider the way forward for the scheme in the context of the government's wider energy efficiency strategy.

Delegates will consider the relatively slow rate of Green Deal take-up and how this might be boosted - looking at ways of improving both consumer and business engagement - as well as whether radical overhaul is necessary.

They will also examine the Government's energy policy more widely, focusing on how the different schemes could be better integrated, the role of the Energy Companies Obligation and how best to achieve the objectives of the scheme in relation to reducing fuel poverty in the UK, as well as how strategies in England compare with those elsewhere, including Scotland.

Keynote Addresses

David Thomas, Deputy Director, Green Deal Demand, Department of Energy and Climate Change; Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive, Energy Saving Trust and Dr Nick Eyre, Jackson Senior Research Fellow, Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford.

Confirmed Speakers

John Alker, Director of Policy and Communications, UK Green Building Council; Mark Bayley, Chief Executive Officer, The Green Deal Finance Company; Jonathan Harley, Principal Consultant, Gemserv; Nigel Hollett, General Manager, SummitSkills; Bill Hull, Partner and Head of Public Sector, TLT Solicitors; Derek Lickorish, Chair, Fuel Poverty Advisory Group; Simon Osborn, Principal Policy Adviser, Which?; Garry Stevens Smith, Chief Executive, Elite GDP; Stephen Tate, Assistant Director, Environment, Greater London Authority; Andrew Warren, Director, Association for the Conservation of Energy and Graham Weller, Head of Green Deal, British Gas.

Video - National Weatherization Day: The Value of Energy Efficiency

This video is in recognition of National Weatherization Day which is an annual event that takes place on October 30th. In this 2009 video, senior government energy advisor Matt Rogers emphasizes the energy and cost benefits of improved energy efficiency - encouraging all Americans to install energy efficiency measures in their own homes - and he expresses appreciation to the nation's weatherization network for its past accomplishments and its continued commitment to serving low-income citizens.

Weatherization Day: Energy Efficiency Resources for those in Need

Weatherization Day is celebrated on October 30, which is fitting as the days grow colder as we head towards winter. The day is intended to raise awareness about the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) which is a nationwide program that was created in 1976. Their energy mission is geared towards reducing energy use and costs for low-income families, particularly for the elderly, people with disabilities, and children, while ensuring their health and safety.

In addition to the focusing on the WAP, the day is intended to raise awareness about the work being performed by the WAP network. The DOE has also added to the focus of the day by declaring October to be Energy Awareness Month.  Continue reading to see the wide range of resources that can help to institute energy efficiency measures and communicate their value.
While there are a lot of things we can do to protect the environment and advance the green economy, one of the easiest and most accessible things we can do is to weatherize our homes. Energy for heating and cooling is among the most climate change causing greenhouse gas (GHG) intensive activities on the planet, so anything we can do to minimize our energy requirements is of great benefit. Weatherization not only saves money, it reduces energy and thereby decreases the amount of GHGs we emit.

Using the most advanced technologies and testing protocols available in the housing industry the WAPTAC program strives to decrease energy demand and costs through improved efficiency, as well as reduce dependence on foreign oil.

The WAPTAC website contains a virtual library of all rules, regulations, policies and procedures required by DOE's weatherization program. On the site you can also find photos and videos of work in progress, site demonstrations, news articles, and other documentation.

The plethora of resources on the WAPTAC site include energy efficiency measures and techniques to communicate the value of weatherization including best practices and procurement. In addition to implementing energy efficiency measures this is also a great day to communicate the value of weatherization with the public, in your workplace, as well as your municipal, state and federal leaders.
