Winners of the 2011 Green Chemistry Awards

For the past 16 years the US EPA has been giving out the awards that recognize the most innovative chemical technologies associated with pollution prevention in the US. The 2011 EPA Presidential Green Chemistry awards went to BioAmber, Genomatica, Kraton Performance Polymers and Sherwin Williams as well as Professor Bruce Lipshutz of University of California, Santa Barbara.

Green chemistry is a field of science that is of major importance in efforts to manage climate change. Scientific research and development in this field focuses on less-hazardous alternatives to existing technologies which reduce or eliminate waste particularly hazardous waste, in industrial production.

According to a recent Pike Research Green Chemistry study, the industry is expected to grow from $2.89bn in 2011 to $98.5bn by 2020.

"Green chemistry markets are currently nascent, with many technologies still at laboratory or pilot scale," says Pike Research president Clint Wheelock, "and many production-scale green chemical plants are not expected to be running at capacity for several more years. However, most green chemical companies are targeting large, existing chemical markets, so adoption of these products are limited less by market development issues than by the ability to feed extant markets at required levels of cost and performance."

Pike Research anticipates dramatic growth rates for green chemicals during the coming decade. The global chemical industry is currently valued at $4 trillion. By 2020, the firm expects that the total chemical industry will expand to $5.3 trillion in annual revenues.

BioAmber was given the Small Business Award for its "Integrated Production and Downstream Applications of Biobased Succinic Acid." BioAmber's technology produces succinic acid at a cost 40% below that of petroleum-based succinic acid and can even compete when oil prices are below $40 per barrel. The technology also sequesters carbon dioxide rather than emitting it.

Succinic acid, commonly referred to as amber acid, is a key building block for a wide range of secondary chemicals used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and agricultural industries. BioAmber's biosuccinic acid can also substitute for other chemicals like adipic acid in traditional polymers and serve as the starting material for the production of chemicals such as BDO and tetrahydrofuran (THF).

Genomatica, on the other hand, has been recognized for its production of high volume basic chemicals from renewable feedstocks at lower cost under the "Greener Synthetic Pathways Award." BDO, with a 2.8 billion pound, $3 billion worldwide market, is a high-volume chemical building block used to make many common polymers, such as spandex and in automotive plastics.

Genomatica expects its production expenses for bio-BDO should be 15-30% less than petroleum-based BDO and be competitive at oil prices of $45 per barrel or at natural gas prices of $3.50 per million Btu.

Kraton is already well known in the chemical industry and the company received this year's "Greener Reaction Conditions Award." for its NEXAR™ Polymer Membrane Technology. The technology is a family of halogen-free, high-flow, polymer membranes made using up to 50% less hydrocarbon solvent. The NEXAR™ membranes can purify hundreds of times more water than one using traditional membranes. The EPA noted that Kraton's technology also save 70% in membrane costs, and 50% in energy
costs.

The NEXAR polymers are reportedly made from block copolymers that provide strength toughness and flexibility, and water or ion transport.

The blog is actually very interested in Sherwin-William's water-based acrylic alkyd technology which was given the "Designing Greener Chemicals Award." Sherwin-Williams is said to have developed its water-based paints (sold under ProClassic Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd,ProMar 200 Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd, and ProIndustrial Waterborne Enamel) made from recycled soda plastic bottle (PET), acrylics and soybean oil.

Sherwin-Williams has used 320,000 pounds of soybean oil, 250,000 pounds of recycled PET, and eliminated 1,000 barrels of oil use as well as over 800,000 pounds of VOCs in 2010.

Professor Lipshutz received the Academic Award. He developed a novel, second-generation designer surfactant called TPGS-750-M made from inexpensive ingredients. The technology is said to offer opportunities for industrial processes to replace large amounts of organic solvents with very small amounts of a benign surfactant nanodispersed in water only. These reactions can even be run in seawater. Sigma-Aldrich is currently offering TPGS-750-M for sale, making it broadly available to research laboratories.

Environmental Activism and Social Media

The failure of governments to make progress on climate change is leading climate campaigners to renew their focus on social media to get people involved in the push for carbon emission controls.

The Global Work Party organized by 350.org is at the forefront of a successful new approach to social change. The 10/10/10 event is a prime example of the new social movement powered by the extraordinary reach of the Web. The proliferation of increasingly powerful mobile technologies have radically increased the reach and immediacy of social advocacy.

The unprecedented success of 350.org's "International Day of Climate Action" on October 24th 2009, was eclipsed only by this year's 10/10/10 Global Work Party event. Thanks to digital media like chat, text messaging, and social networks, the 350.org team mobilized over 7000 actions in 188 countries this year.

Some have called this reliance on accessible online tools "open source" activism. The use of new media is building an enduring climate constituency.

Activists are downloading online toolkits for decentralized events and using the power of social media to push for greater climate protection. Coordinated online outreach has made the immense scale of the Global Work Party possible.

Thanks to social media, climate activists are cultivating resources that are mobilizing people in ways that are transforming our cultures and our civilizations.

Climate activists are up against the immense resources of the fossil fuel industry and their powerful propaganda machines. While environmental groups cannot outspend or outmaneuver the fossil fuel industry, social media is leveling the playing field and democratizing the debate.

The Global Work Party and US Midterm Elections

In the US, over 2000 events took place on 10/10/10 for 350.org's Global Work Party. With the midterm elections looming on the horizon, this high profile event may help some Americans to consider casting their vote for an imperiled environment.

According to the 2010 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) the US has a score of 63.5 which puts it well behind Western European nations. Although this Congress did not succeed in passing environmental legislation, we are much less likely to see climate or energy legislation if the Republicans get the majority they seek in November 2010.

Judging by the polls, American voters do not seem to understand that the environment is a priority issue and not only for the planet but for the economy and for jobs as well.

Perhaps this historic day of action will help galvanize Democrats to get out and vote to stave off a Republican majority that will kill any hope legislative progress.

Canada and 350.org's 10/10/10 Event

The Global Work Party was a big success in Canada. To organize the 10/10/10 event throughout Canada, May Boeve, the Canadian Coordinator for 350.org and her team of regional coordinators worked with Climate Action Network-Canada.

A wide range of events took place in communities all across Canada, some people toured local renewable energy facilities, other hosted citywide bike repair workshops, and others planted or harvested community gardens. The event also sent a message to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canadian politicians: "We're getting to work solving the climate crisis. Are you?"

According to the 2010 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) Canada has a score of 66.5. The EPI ranks 163 countries on 25 performance indicators tracked across ten policy categories covering both environmental public health and ecosystem vitality. These indicators provide a gauge at a national government scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy goals.

With Canada lagging well behind Western European countries on the EPI and a Conservative government that has shown no environmental leadership, Canada has a lot of work to do.

At last year's 350.org events Canadians from all across the country called for climate leadership. This year Canadians engaged the fight against climate change, while demanding action from the Prime Minister and his government.

Dear Friends,

How do you say 'thank you' 7,347 times?

People got to work yesterday in at least that many places around the world -- the planet has never seen anything quite that widespread. Or quite that beautiful.

I hope you'll take a few minutes to visit 350.org to look through some of the thousands of pictures that we have managed to sort through so far. View the Slideshow at 350.org. And if you haven't sent in your photos yet, now's the time: here's how to submit your photos to 350.org.

We're looking forward to reading your reports over the next few weeks, and we'll be in touch with next steps and ideas. And in a few days, we’ll send along a video of a few of the day's highlights that you can share with friends. But today is a day for you to mostly just feel good.

We know we can't build the movement we need on just one day--but 10/10/10 made the foundation for our fight much larger and much stronger. And your message is getting out to media and politicians alike--we've already seen your work party photos in newspapers and on television shows all over the planet.

We hope 10/10/10 left you feeling connected with people all across this beautiful globe. You are helping shape the future of this planet, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do. "Thank you" doesn't seem nearly strong enough.

Onwards, always,

Bill McKibben for The 350.org Team

P.S. 10/10/10 isn’t the end of our work this year, and it’s vital that we keep the pressure on world leaders in the coming days and weeks. We could use more phone calls to let politicians know we expect them to lead the fight on the climate crisis. Please take a few mintues today to make a quick call by using our easy call-in gadget--our leaders won't hear our message if we don't send it to them.

Message of Thanks from the President of the Maldives

Dear friends,
As President of one of the world's most climate vulnerable countries, I want to thank you for your tireless work and offer my wholehearted support for the Global Work Party on 10/10/10.

I shall be working hard in support of 10/10/10, up on my roof installing solar panels donated by Sungevity. But my event is just one of dozens of activities planed in the Maldives and thousands worldwide in support of this campaign.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to continue working to ensure that the planet meets the sustainable goal of returning CO2 concentrations to 350ppm.

For the Maldives, 350 is more than just a number: it is a passport to survival for our entire nation.

With best wishes,

President Mohamed Nasheed
President of the Maldives

Global Work Party Events Around the Globe

The events being staged around the world for the 10/10/10 event are a diverse assortment of efforts that respond to local realities. From tree planting to solar and wind power projects people are acting to protect the planet.

Events include Pakistan's "Celebration of Survival," a climate awareness event that is happening in Balochistan, a region hit hard by the devestating floods earlier this year.

At United Nations headquarters in New York, staff collected 350 old incandescent light-bulbs, replacing them with efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

In Mexico City, the mayor of the largest city in the Americas pledged that the metropolitan area would cut its carbon emissions 10%.

In the Namib Desert, Namibia, a rural education center is installing six panels to try and go carbon neutral

In Alexandra Towship, South Africa, citizens will install solar-hot water on a home for the mentally disabled

In Iraq students are working to put solar panels up at the University of Babylon.

In Las Cruces, New Mexico a group of community members are putting up panels on a local homeless shelter.

In Illinois, the governor pledged to put solar panels on the roof of his official residence, following a similar promise earlier in the week from Barack Obama.

Other events around the globe include tree plantings in rural Tanzania, solar installation in China, and an international bike-ride from Jordan to Israel, along with thousands of much simpler events organized by smaller groups.

Fossil Fuel Calamities and Deadly Weather Underscore the Urgency of the 10/10/10 Event

While governments are dithering, the climate crisis is accelerating. The Gulf oil spill, the coal mining disaster in Virginia and a number of weather related natural disasters have repeatedly thrust fossil fuels and climate change into the news headlines in 2010.

It is already clear that 2010 is on track to be the hottest year on record. However the effects of climate change extend beyond the break up of Arctic ice sheets witnessed this summer. Devastating floods in Pakistan and massive wildfires in Eastern Europe, are but two examples of extreme weather that have claimed thousands of lives.

Record setting temperatures were set in Asia, in the US, Los Angeles also set a new all-time temperature record at 113 degrees.

Many Americans have begun to do their part, making small changes in their own lives in the hopes of helping create a more sustainable planet.

However, despite the costs of extracting fossil fuels and the plethora of extreme weather events, the Congress is letting fossil fuel companies off the hook instead of holding them accountable.

The need for government action on climate change is increasingly urgent. The Global Work Party tells governments that if we can get to work for the planet so can you.

It is time for leaders to stop playing politics and get to work on legislation, regulation and treaties that will protect our planet for future generations.

10/10/10 Global Work Party Message for Governments

The message reverberating from the Global Work Party is that people around the world are taking action on climate change and demanding that their governments join them.

"We need to figure out a way to get our politicians to work," 350.org founder Bill McKibben told the LA Times in a phone interview. "We figured one way would be to get to work ourselves, to kind of provide the model, and so all over the world people will be doing very useful things in their community."

According to McKibben, the movement needs to race ahead more quickly than the crisis itself -- and pull the politicians along with them.

Citizens are driving solutions to climate change within their own communities, and encouraging political leaders to get to work themselves.

By demonstrating a willingness to take action, the Global Work Party issued a challenge to world leaders. Wherever they are and however they get involved, people around the world are demanding that governments sign treaties, pass legislation and enact regulations that meaningfully address climate change.

10/10/10 Proves the Environmental Movement is Bigger than Ever

On October 10th 2010, people around the world acted together to shatter the myth that the global climate movement is in decline. The event known as 10/10/10: The Global Work Party will be remembered as the day when a single environmental message blanketed more of the planet than ever before.

People have made The Global Work Party the single largest event in human history. This means that 350.org has succeeded in beating their own record set last year by the International Day of Climate Change Action, which CNN called, "the most widespread day of political action in the planet's history."

Last year's 350.org event saw 5200 events in 181 countries. This year 188 countries are participating with over 7000 climate solutions projects. With the exception of four countries (North Korea, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, and San Marino) the entire planet is engaged.

Environmentally helpful actions are occurring in forests, wetlands, parks, communities, schools, homes, churches, mosques, synagogues and temples. This is a powerfully unifying event that transcends national boundaries, as well as ethnic and religious divisions. Climate change is the only issue that has galvanized international support and mobilized people to act all around the globe.

The global climate movement is enormous, easily the single largest social action movement the world has ever seen. This torrential outpouring of action for the planet demonstrates the unyielding commitment of the environmental movement.

A disappointing outcome at COP15, misinformation from the old energy economy and Republican obstructionism in the US Congress has not killed efforts to combat climate change. On the contrary, the environmental movement is bigger, more diverse, and more creative than ever.

Millions of people renewed their commitment to the fight against climate change. This event demonstrates that no matter how long it takes, people around the world remain committed to tangible actions to combat climate change.

White House Agrees to Put Solar On It

To encourage the leaders to get involved with the 10/10/10 event, 350.org launched a special campaign titled Put Solar On It. Through letters and petitions, people are encouraging government leaders to put solar panels on their official residences and principal workplaces on October 10, 2010.

From the White House in Washington to the Rashtrapati Bhavan in India, people are sending a strong message to their leaders.
Bill McKibben, the leader of 350.org, even went to Washington to personally meet with White House officials.

According to 350.org, the Put Solar On It, campaign sends "a strong symbolic message about what the future demand--and maybe our leaders will see how easy it is to start down a greener path. If they hammer in a solar panel, perhaps they'll feel more committed to hammering out some clean energy legislation."

In effect, 350.org has made the solar panels emblematic of a commitment to passing legislation and enacting regulations.

President Mohammed Nasheed of the Maldives was the first to confirm he'll be up on his roof on 10/10/10, installing a solar array.

The Obama administration also announced that they are going to put solar panels on the First Family's living quarters, returning to a tradition abandoned by the iconic Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Solar panels on the White House are a national symbol. As Americans prepare to vote in midterm elections, it should be clear which of their two choices are more likely to engage much needed climate and energy reform.

McKibben Calls Extreme Weather Events Climate Disasters

An August email from 350.org's Bill McKibben, referred to this summer's floods in Pakistan, fires in Russia, and mudslides in China as climate disasters.

McKibben is America's leading environmentalist, he is also a prolific award winning author and educator. Although 350.org is primarily committed to the fight against global warming to prevent climate disasters, the organization is also helping with relief efforts by encouraging monetary donations to assist those besieged by extreme weather (see www.350.org/disasters).

Even though it is impossible to blame anthropogenic climate change for a single weather event, the torrential rains in Pakistan and China, and the heatwaves and drought in Russia are consistent with extreme weather predictions caused by global warming.

Regionally there have been record breaking temperatures from Finland to Kuwait, and downpours in China, Germany and Poland. It is a documented fact that 2010 is on tract to be the warmest year ever and with CO2 levels now at 392 many credible organizations including U.N. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are attributing global warming to man made CO2.

According to Reinsurer Munich Re's natural catastrophe database the number of extreme weather events like windstorm and floods have tripled since 1980, and the trend is expected to continue.

The U.N. panel of climate scientists said in a 2007 report that global warming had doubled the chances of heatwaves similar to a scorching 2003 summer in Europe, in which 35,000 people died. The report also indicates that with at least 90 percent certainty that most of the warming in the past 50 years was caused by mankind.

As Bill pointed out in his email, all of the countries recently devastated by the floods, mudslides, and heatwaves were hugely active in the International Day of Climate Action last October 24 and they're all planning events for 10/10/10: the Global Work Party.

The 350.org 10/10/10 event is a day to celebrate climate solutions and push political leaderships to do the same. The floods, fires and mudslides that have killed thousands of people around the world draw attention to the most pressing concern of our time. Finding solutions to climate change will save thousands of lives today and millions of lives in the future.

White House Agrees to Put Solar On It

Bill McKibben Goes to the White House

On September 10, exactly one month before the 10/10/10 event, 350.org's Bill McKibben and his team went to the White House. They entered the meeting with over 40,000 letters asking President Obama to return solar panels to the White House.

At McKibbens request, hundreds of people registered new work parties to encourage President Obama to reinstall solar panels on the White House roof.

On the way to Washington, McKibben wrote to his legions of followers from a biodiesel van on a highway in the state of Maine. McKibben shared the fact that he and his team were traveling with one of the solar panels that American president Jimmy Carter installed on the White House roof over three decades ago.

When this solar panel was installed in 1979, Carter said, "A generation from now this solar heater can either be a curiosity, a museum piece, an example of a road not taken, or it can be just a small part of one of the greatest and most exciting adventures ever undertaken by the American people."

Sadly, the panels were removed by Republican President Ronald Reagan. Unity College salvaged them from a government warehouse and installed them on the roof of their school cafeteria. The school agreed to donate one solar panel back to the White House, "in the hope that it will spur Obama to pick up where Carter left off."

Mohamed Nasheed, president of the Maldives, had agreed to install solar panels on his roof on October 10 and McKibben was hoping that President Obama would do the same. However, McKibben left dissapointed as the White House has opted to continue its deliberations to figure out an appropriate course of action.

On October 10 2010, the Global Work Party will send the President and all politicians a clear message: we're getting to work, now it's time for you to do your part.

Independent of what political leaderships will do, McKibben and the 350.org team wants to send the message that we can control what happens in our communities, and we can use our own efforts to put more political pressure on our leaders.

350.org's 10/10/10 Event

We are one month away from the 350.org event, 10/10/10: The Global Work Party for Climate Justice. On October 10, 2010, thousands of environmentally oriented events will take place around the world. Organizers are calling it "A Day to Celebrate Climate Solutions--working together in our communities on projects that can cut carbon and build a clean energy future."

350.org is an international grassroots campaign that aims to mobilize a global climate movement united by a common call to action. By spreading an understanding of the science and a shared vision for a fair policy, they seek solutions to the climate crisis.

The organization's name comes from the fact that 350 parts per million (PPM) is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. We need to get below 350ppm to avoid runaway climate change. To achieve this goal, 350.org employs a different kind of PPM, the people powered movement.

When it comes to promoting international events, 350.org has proven its ability to successfully dial into the vast reach of social media. Last year, they made history with the International Day for Climate Action, the largest event in human history.

For the 10/10/10 event, thousands of people around the world have already registered their plans, including bike repair workshoppers in San Francisco, school insulating teams in London, waste-land-to-veggies-gardeners in New Zealand, and solar panel installers in Kenya. The day is intended to pressure leaders to Get To Work on carbon reductions by passing strong climate legislation, promoting clean energy and reducing emissions.

With events already scheduled in over 140 countries, 10/10/10 is a day when people all around the world people will be acting on their shared commitment to reduce anthropogenic carbon.

To be part of what is sure to be the biggest day of practical action to cut carbon that the world has ever seen, register an event in your community or share this post and encourage people to Get to Work on 10/10/10.
