Program - 2018 Institute for CSR Certificate

The 2018 Institute for CSR program will take place Mar. 15 – 16, May 10 – 11, July 26 – 27, Sept. 20 – 21 in Washington, DC. Over the course of four, two-day sessions, participants learn from some of the field’s most innovative thinkers, authors, and practitioners, expand their professional networks learning alongside CSR peers from across the country, all while earning a Professional Certificate in CSR from Johns Hopkins University.  Coursework will focus on a wide range of topics, including CSR strategy, trends in philanthropy, employee engagement, ethics and sustainability, measurement, and communications.

Launched in 2014, the Institute for Corporate Social Responsibility was designed by—and for—those in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) field as a practical, interactive, and affordable professional development opportunity for CSR practitioners. This program is designed for CSR practitioners searching for the skills, inspiration, and expanded professional network needed to deliver increased value back to their company and the communities they serve.

The Institute currently accepts up to 25 applicants per year. This small class size ensures maximum faculty and participant interaction, allows for deep and meaningful group discussions and debates, and affords the opportunity to take classroom learnings offsite with “field trips” and networking events. This non-credit, professional certificate program is an initiative of the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers, offered in partnership with Advanced Academic Programs at Johns Hopkins University and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Corporate Citizenship Center.

“The Institute for CSR provides business professionals with the opportunity to connect with their peers in the field, learn from the most innovative thinkers in CSR, and grow their skills to make a greater impact,” said Marc DeCourcey, senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber Foundation. “By focusing on practical, real-world skills and best practices, the Institute is a valuable experience for all and I encourage those looking to enhance their work to apply to join the 2018 class.”

Now entering its fifth year, the Institute for CSR is a professional development program designed for business professionals currently working in a CSR role. Since its launch, the Institute has featured the expertise of CSR leaders from American Express, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Walmart, and other major corporations.

“When we originally designed the Institute for CSR five years ago, it was as a practical, interactive, and affordable professional development opportunity for the CSR field,” said Katy Moore, managing director of Corporate Strategy for the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers. “What we didn’t anticipate was the invaluable personal and professional connections that participants would build with the faculty, guest speakers, and their fellow classmates. Many of these relationships have strengthened over time and our alumni networks have become trusted sources of advice and feedback for current and past participants.”

"Over the past decade, we've seen an incredible upswing in "corporate citizenship" among companies worldwide, increasing the demand for skilled experts in this burgeoning field,” said Karin Orr, program coordinator for the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management at Johns Hopkins University. “The Institute for CSR capitalizes on this demand by providing a dynamic and innovative space for cross-sectoral exchange and ongoing dialogue among some of the most incredible leading professionals in the CSR field."

Hult International Business School Publication "Greenovate!"

A Hult International Business School publication named "Greenovate!" is the first publication in the Beyond Eureka! series of studies by the Center for Innovation, Excellence, and Growth (IXL). The joint publication explores the topic of developing consistent and dependable processes of innovation as well as how companies can employ environmentally-friendly strategies and turn a profit.

The companies they profile include one that makes smart, solar-powered garbage cans that signal trash collectors when they are full, thus reducing fuel costs. This is but one innovative example of the 50 companies featured in the inaugural publication.

The book examines a range of industries and many different products that are profiting from the adoption of sustainable business practices. Each company profile includes the goals and barriers encountered.

Research compiled for a unique hands-on MBA consulting course by the Hult graduating class of 2009 was also incorporated into the book. The publication clearly illustrates that the confluence of good business sense with environmentally-friendly strategies can enhance a product or service.

Ferrum College's Climate Research Opportunities

Ferrum College offers an excellent undergraduate program and great opportunities for environmental research. Ferrum College professors Bob Pohlad and Carolyn Thomas are part of a team that will receive $494,980 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for environmental research related to climate change.

The money will be used to establish a national ecological and education network that will begin with 12 primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and expand to colleges and universities throughout the United States. The work has been shown to be significant both in terms of tracking environmental issues, and increased student learning and understanding.

Collaborative projects engage students in scientific research while teaching them basic ecology, “It’s unusual for undergraduate students to be able to do this kind of research,” said Thomas.

“It’s important to point out that students at Ferrum College and the 11 other PUIs, will be out in the woods and wading streams — taking measurements, studying wildlife, and learning how to use the data.” Thomas explained that the data is combined with research from other institutions, so scientists can measure changes over time.

"What is most important," Thomas expained, is that “students will be learning, while the world gains a clearer picture of what’s happening around us.”

The University of Oregon's Interdisciplinary MBA and Green Chemistry Programs

The University of Oregon's (UO) Londquist College of Business offers an Interdisciplinary MBA and a Green Chemistry Program. UO's interdisciplinary MBA involves different departments and includes subjects like Landscape Architecture, Planning and Public Policy, and Sustainable Business Practices.

The four primary partners that contribute to UO's interdisciplinary MBA are the PNNL and UO Office of Tech Transfer, which contribute patented or copyrighted technologies that they believe offer commercial potential, and tap their streams of licensing royalty income to support the students’ interdisciplinary technology evaluations.

The second partner is the UO academic department. It provides access to faculty inventors, and helps MBA students network with doctoral students and post-docs in physics, biology, chemistry, materials science, psychology, computer science, education and others.

Thirdly, the LCE contributes M.B.A. students and faculty advisers with expertise in accounting, finance, marketing, and business planning. Finally the Center for Law and Entrepreneurship contributes law students and faculty advisers with expertise in assessing intellectual property.

The UO's Green Chemistry program can help organizations reduce risk and create competitive advantages. Developing greener chemicals, materials, products and processes will help ensure that human health, a sustainable environment and a thriving economy endure.

Oregon is poised to lead the country in developing and applying green chemistry solutions. The state's commitment to sustainability and concentration of pioneering business leaders and world class researchers create fertile ground for innovation.
