The Growing Problem of Cell Phone Waste

Electronic devices continue to be the fastest growing waste stream in the US and cell phones are a major part of this. In 2011, manufacturers produced more than 1.68 billion wireless phones worldwide. In the United States alone, it’s estimated that fewer than 10 percent of discarded mobile phones will be recycled.

Regular phone upgrades are driving the growth of electronic waste. Companies like Apple regularly upgrade their technology and encourage users to buy new models. This built-in obsolesce is the kind of irresponsible business practices that drive profits but destroy the environment.

AT&T concedes that there is “much work to be done” as millions of devices are discarded every year without being recycled.

Despite the efforts of leading American mobile phone companies like AT&T and Sprint, the US still lags behind Europe when it comes to responsible business practices. A Verdantix study, found that sustainability is still not central to the business strategy and product marketing of the major US telcom firms the way it is for European telecom industry.

AT&T's Record Breaking Recycling for Wireless Devices

As reported in an Environmental Leader article, Guinness World Records have certified that AT&T customers broke a world record by recycling 50,942 wireless devices during a one-week period. In 2011 AT&T collected about three million cell phones for reuse and recycling and the company's new trade in program is expected to help AT&T surpass that number in 2012.

The recycling of these AT&T devices in 2011 avoided sending 25,471 pounds of waste to landfills. In September, AT&T launched a line of phone chargers with housings made of at least 30 percent post-consumer plastics. The chargers are also Energy Star 5-rated, meaning that they use “minimal” power when plugged in.

In July of this year, AT&T was named as the most sustainable US telecoms firm in a study by Verdantix. Also in July, the company launched its eco-ratings system in stores, allowing customers to compare cell phones’ environmental impacts.

Sprint's Industry Leading Cell Phone Recycling

Since 2001, Sprint's takeback program has collected more than 4,000 metric tons of electronic waste which comprises more than 40 million wireless devices. These programs not only keep phones out of landfills they have helped the company avoid more than $1 billion in costs. In 2011 Sprint recycled more than 11 million wireless devices, over 211,000 on average per week. Sprint is the first and only US wireless carrier to outline specific commitments that address electronic waste (e-waste) holistically. Sprint is ranked No. 3 on Newsweek’s Green Rankings of American companies and it is the only wireless carrier to crack the top 25 for Newsweek's Green Rankings of global companies.

Sprint celebrated America Recycles Day by raising awareness of the importance of recycling. Sprint has launched a phone recycling pledge where customers can win one of five rewards cards worth $500 (now through Nov. 30). Sprint has also posted a video online that illustrates how old cell phones can gain a “second life” while reducing the amount of electronic waste in the marketplace.

Sprint has been serious about managing electronic waste since 2001. Sprint developed a phone trade-in program and was the first US wireless carrier to provide an instant credit at point of sale, as well as allow customers to bring back any phone from any carrier, now known as the Sprint Buyback program.

Around 40 percent of customers that visit a Sprint retail store participate in the Buyback program. This program benefits the environment, the company and consumers. This has resulted in more than $75 million going back to consumers.

“Making our business more sustainable is really part of our DNA at Sprint,” said Fared Adib, senior vice president of product development and reverse logistics. “You can’t be in our industry, put the amount of product into the market that we do, and not think through the full lifecycle. We’re proud that we’ve been recognized as having the industry’s leading buyback program despite our No. 3 position in the market – and we believe these efforts will contribute to Sprint’s long-term success.”

The fact that Sprint also accepts competitor devices led to Compass Intelligence recognizing the company as having the best trade-in program in the industry for two years in a row.

In September, Sprint was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its leadership as the only wireless carrier to join the EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Electronics Challenge. As a participant, Sprint will strive to send 100 percent of the electronics it collects to third-party certified refurbishers and recyclers and to increase the amount of used electronics collected.

Sprint's Electronics Stewardship Policy, developed with guidance from BSR, Basel Action Network and ABI Research, focuses on the full lifecycle of the electronics it buys and sells. It publicly states Sprint will strive to design and buy greener electronics, extend the useful life of equipment, boost the collection of used equipment, maximize the reuse of electronics, and responsibly recycle the rest through third-party certified vendors.

Sprint's environmental business practices and policies make it a recycling leader and a model for the industry. Their efforts reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help manage natural resources.

Recycling is a Business Imperative

Recycling is a core feature of responsible business practices. An ever growing number of companies are treating recycling as a serious corporate priority. Almost 75 percent of corporate waste can be recycled and recycling waste can also benefit the bottom line. There is high residual value of the metals used in cable, especially copper, both production waste and discarded cable needs to be recycled. Metals, paper, newspapers, bottles, cans, plastic waste and residue are also high priority recyclable materials in the work place.

A UNEP report indicates that investing $108 million in the waste sector annually could increase recycling threefold by 2050 and reduce landfill contents by more than 85 percent. The footprint from waste could nearly double by 2030, which translates to 30 percent of total energy-related carbon dioxide. There are already precedents that establish the effectiveness of recycling. In Brazil, recycling already makes $2 billion a year while avoiding 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Businesses that recycle develop systems to collect materials by setting up a waste reduction team, circulating memos and convening regular meetings.

Many states, like California, have adopted mandatory commercial recycling procedures that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other industrial and corporate waste. Most states provide information and assistance as to how to go about recycling.

Everyone from Proctor and Gamble to the chemical companies who make plastics and flame retardants, are focusing on sustainability and product life cycles.

Recycling not only offers an opportunity for good public relations, it is a business necessity that also benefits the bottom line.

What Businesses Can Do on America Recycles Day

The business community has a crucial role to play in recycling. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as much as 45 percent of the 250 million tons of municipal waste generated in 2010 was from commercial and institutional locations such as business and government offices, retail establishments, schools and hospitals. Recognizing the power of individuals in the workplace to engage in recycling which results in saving energy, reducing emissions and landfills, conserving natural resources and generating jobs.

Keep America Beautiful has launched a Recycling Pledge Inviting Businesses and Governments to Commit to 10% Increase in Workplace Recycling. Keep America Beautiful is challenging corporate America and government to sign up for its Recycling at Work pledge. The pledge requires businesses, governments and institutional entities to commit to a 10 percent increase in the recycling of paper products, beverage containers, electronics and batteries in the workplace through a variety of actions by 2015. It also encourages the recycling of food waste and other biodegradables.

“The environmental impact from recycling remains critically important as a measure of sustainable economies and vibrant communities,” said Matt McKenna, KAB president and chief executive officer. “To increase our national municipal recycling rate from its current 34 percent level, the increase will come less from national initiatives and more from locally-driven efforts. Engaging individuals to take the action to recycle at home, at work and at play is the linchpin to increasing recycling rates.”

The Recycling at Work pledge requires these entities to take the pledge and report on actions taken to increase recycling and the results of those actions. KAB will compile the data and issue a comprehensive report in 2015, fulfilling its commitment made in partnership with Alcoa (NYS:AA) and the Alcoa Foundation at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City.

Recycling at Work’s 2015 goal will be achieved through a series of approaches that include:
  • Increasing employee awareness of the availability of recyclable services and benefits of recycling in offices and other facilities
  • Enhancing infrastructure and communications to enable greater recycling and diversion of the materials in offices and other facilities
  • Identifying cost-effective opportunities to incorporate consideration of end-of-life recyclability and increased recycled content into the products purchased
  • Reporting on progress each year through the Recycling at Work online system
  • Inviting other organizations to take the Recycling at Work pledge
“Recycling is participatory environmentalism,” McKenna said. “Poll after poll shows that individuals identify the act of recycling as their most immediate, tangible, and visible contribution to a better environment.”

Whether the consequence of the act of recycling is visible, such as the observable effect of less littering, almost all recyclers know that their actions are saving natural resources, reducing energy consumption, and sustaining our planet for future generations.

America’s leading companies are proud to make America Recycles Day possible. National sponsors include: American Chemistry Council, Anheuser-Busch, Earth911.com, Glad, Johnson & Johnson, Nestlé Waters North America, Owens-Illinois, PepsiCo and Waste Management.

America Recycles Day 2012

Every year on or around November 15 the America Recycles Day event encourages people to enhance awareness and encourage action through thousands of events. America Recycles Day is a program of Keep America Beautiful, in 2012 it is celebrated on Thursday November 15. America Recycles Day is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. On this day thousands of local events will be held across the country ranging from electronics collections and document shredding events to plastic bag collections and recycled art shows. Throughout the month of November, an estimated 2 million people will join in the celebration.

Recycling is a multi-billion dollar industry that employs millions of Americans and helps advance our clean energy economy. Although we have seen progress, there is still much more that can be done. For municipal solid waste, today’s recycling rates stand at roughly 34 percent in the US.

Through the simple act of recycling and buying recycled products, consumers can create the momentum that builds materials markets and fills the supply chain of recycled (raw) materials that can help fuel our economy. But there is more opportunity. According to a report published by the nonprofit organization As You Sow, it is estimated that the value of just discarded packaging in the U.S. is worth over $11 billion.

To put a perspective on the effect of recycling, the number of cans recycled every 30 seconds equals the number of people who could fill an entire pro football stadium. And recycling just one aluminum can saves the energy equivalent of powering a 46-inch LED TV for 3 hours. A glass container can go from the recycling bin to a store shelf in as few as 30 days.

Recycling offers a plethora of benefits including green jobs, less trash in landfills and conservation of our natural resources.
