The Green Leadership of Lawthorn Primary School in Scotland

Scottish school, Lawthorn Primary has reduced its footprint and they are teaching other schools to do the same. Schools across Scotland have access to the school's global footprint resource. Every aspect of the school’s consumption has been examined from the kitchen to the bathroom. They monitor their activities and set goals.

The school has already managed to reduce energy usage by almost half (43 percent). They are saving water, and reusing plastic bottles, (eg to make a greenhouse), even the number of cars coming to the school has been reduced by sixty percent. The academic curriculums of the students are also benefiting as these projects are being put to use to encourage learning, from social studies to mathematics.

The school has the support of the Scottish government, which is a leader in renewable energy. The government has pledged to create all of Scotland’s electricity from green energy by 2020, to reduce greenhouse gasses by 42 per cent by 2020. Scotland's government is also serious about sustainability education. In response to the UN Decade of ESD, promised that by 2014 people in Scotland will have developed the knowledge, skills, understanding and values to live sustainable lives.

The net greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland have been reduced by 27.6 percent since 1990. Having access to the material from organizations such as UNESCO, the World Wildlife Fund, and Eco‐Schools Scotland, has provided teachers and pupils with a wealth of information to choose from, and has allowed them to improve their learning.

Renewable Energy Teaching Tools: Sprout and KidWind

We need to acquaint the workforce of tomorrow with Renewable sources of energy. Renewables are a crucial part of our future but we will need to educate a vast supply of human resources to research, build and install the necessary facilities and infrastructure. As reviewed in a Renewable Energy World (REW) article, there are a couple of new tools that will help to develop the skilled workforce of tomorrow.

A new teaching tool called Sprout is just the kind of tool needed to get people interested in renewable energy. Sprout is outfitted with solar panels, a wind turbine and a weather station. Sprout calculates and combines data for wind speed/direction, solar elevation/irradiance, voltage, watts/m2 available and other statistics. Sprout also offers integrated lesson plans for all levels that allow students to use renewables in math, science and more. Sprout is located in North Carolina.

KidWind is another tool designed to show students how wind energy systems are built. KidWind offers hands-on “challenges” throughout the US, a full wind energy curriculum, and even includes lessons about solar energy, generators, and energy efficiency. As part of the program students spend three months building a wind turbines, which are then entered into local competitions, which are promoted on the KidWind website. This program teaches the mechanics of building a wind turbine, the dynamics of wind, and a wide assortment of issues related to energy and power.

Both Sprout and KidWind comply with the STEM (Savings Through Energy Management) program. This nationally recognized workshop is generally conducted in five lessons, one per week, and educates students about energy costs and career skills.

If America is to be competitive in the field of renewable energy it will have to have a skilled workforce capable of building and maintaining the vast networks of clean energy projects that are anticipated. These two tools are examples of the kind of creativity required to get kids interested in the twenty-first century energy economy.

GSA Programs Provide Tools to Students to Save Their Future

Driven by the concepts that individuals can make a difference and that schools can change the world, GSA has provided frameworks and ongoing support through its interactive website and social media sites. These help schools and school districts drive their sustainability initiatives forward. As one person put it, “Your movement is helping not only to change the culture of our schools for the better but the culture of the Department of Education.”

GSA is actively collaborating with State Departments of Education across the U.S. and has found a steadfast partner in John Shea, chief executive officer, Division of School Facilities, NYC Department of Education.

Shea said, “The Green Schools Alliance is an extraordinarily important part of our sustainability efforts here. As the largest school system in the U.S., with more than 1,200 buildings, my office had an overwhelming task in its effort to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation, greenhouse gas reduction and operating buildings efficiently. Joining GSA was a strong first step in these efforts. Being a GSA member gave us great credibility among principals, administrators, facilities staff and, particularly, students, and made everyone feel they were part of a larger community. By benchmarking energy usage in all of our schools, we now have the data we need to engage each school community, as well as parents, elected officials and the City at large. GSA provides all our member schools with resources to help them reach their energy conservation goals and to help us all learn and grow.”

To be sure, no individual school or subset of schools can solve 21st Century environmental and climate challenges alone. GSA programs demonstrate the power of collaboration and collective action. The potential of a youth-led, inter-generational green schools movement to change the world for the better must be tapped. Young people know about climate change, pollution and habitat loss, and they want to save their future. Given the “unprecedented emergency” leading scientists say the world is facing, students must have all available tools at their disposal to help them do so.

Student Climate & Conservation Corps

In partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) premier training facility, the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC), GSA launched the Student Climate & Conservation Congress (Sc3) in 2009. Sc3 is GSA’s student arm and is open to 9th- through 12th-grade students who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental action. Selected Sc3 members, who are nominated by their schools, attend a five-day summer Congress held at NCTC in Shepherdstown, West Va. They enjoy a full program of study focused on the natural environment and 21st Century sustainability solutions.

The Congress includes substantial group discussions and lectures by world-renowned guests. Recent Sc3 speakers include: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., oceanographer Sylvia Earle, authors Douglas Brinkley and Barry Lopez, 350.org founder Bill McKibben, Nobel laureate Virginia Burkett, PhD, and innovators, such as futurist Mitchell Joachim and founder of the LEED building rating system Rob Watson, Rob Watson.

The Congress trains students in leadership, conservation and sustainable design as well as topics like habitat restoration, education and fundraising. Using the building, campus or community as a teaching tool, students work alongside faculty and staff on a range of hands-on projects with environmental professionals, including cataloguing flora and fauna, and demonstrations on the installation of green energy technologies. Each day also includes time for outdoor programs, walkabouts, river hikes, campfire stories and stargazing, thus fostering an appreciation of the natural world, which the students are working hard to preserve.

Student Fellows learn the scientific, economic, political and social consequences of environmental inaction; they also learn about available opportunities to help them make a difference. They make a year-long commitment to action that is tracked by Sc3 faculty after the program ends. Sc3 Fellows return home with a new set of tools and a greater understanding of the interrelation between human societies, economies and the natural environment, thus making them an even stronger force for sustainable change in their local communities.

The results have been inspirational. Sc3 graduates have continued on to coordinate campus-wide greening initiatives, including installing green roofs, launching composting programs, conducting campus energy audits, building wetlands and working with school faculty to introduce curriculum on global warming and environmental justice.

America's Greenest Schools from Sierra

Each year Sierra provides complete comprehensive green rankings on America's institutions of higher learning. Here are their top 10 which they call "America's Coolest Schools."

10. Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina

ASU has America's longest-running program (it's existed since 1984) for the study of "appropriate technology"—eco-positive advances on a small, local scale. Students get hands-on lessons in alternative power, low-impact transportation, and organic agriculture. Above, participants in a geography class launch a weather balloon to gather data for snowfall-prediction research.

9. University of California, Irvine, Irvine, California

UCI has a dozen extracurricular environmental groups, so students are strongly encouraged to take part in eco-activities. The school, which hosts the high-profile "Toward a Sustainable 21st Century" conference, recycles more than 70% of its trash, while "hydration stations" help reduce bottled-water waste. Above, students plant an orange tree in a new on-campus grove.

8. Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut

In 2005, Yale committed to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions 43% by 2020. The campus now has 14 LEED buildings, including the Platinum-certified School of Environmental and Forest Studies. Above, students sort through items at the university's annual "spring salvage" event, which reclaims stuff that would otherwise get thrown out at the end of the academic year.

7. Duke University, Durham, North Carolina

Duke is trying to achieve climate neutrality, so it's a leader in generating and buying offsets and coaching other schools to do the same. Above, students on the campus farm harvest green beans and other produce, all of which will be served in dining halls.

6. University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire

UNH sells renewable-energy credits off its landfill-gas pipeline, then spends that money on its own efficiency projects, reducing not only the campus's emissions but also those of the entire state. The school also runs an organic dairy-research farm, allowing students access to a milking Jersey herd.\

5. University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut

The new composting facility at UConn processes up to 15 truckloads of manure per week. And campus recycling programs are extensive—students know what to do with everything from outmoded cellphones to smelly sneakers. Above, students sort through a pile of donations headed for Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe Program, which turns worn-thin footwear into running tracks and playground surfaces.

4. University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

UW pays compulsive attention to buying local: More than half of the school's food is produced within 250 miles of campus. Administrators are also firmly committed to using renewable energy. Above, student Jamie Rowe, who coordinates UW's Campus Sustainability Fund, places her bike on one of the school's seven bicycle-repair stations.

3. Stanford University, Palo Alto, California

At Stanford, hungry students can pick from more than 20 courses about domestic and global food systems. Dining halls and campus farming workshops harvest ingredients—including barley for beer—from their own organic gardens. Above, a student in a class called Principals and Practices of Sustainable Agriculture took a compost pile's temperature at the Stanford Educational Farm.

2. Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia

Georgia Tech steers students toward taking at least one class about sustainability—and offers more than 260 such courses to choose from. The school invests its endowment responsibly and aggressively prevents dining-hall waste. Above, Captain Planet poses with students and staff during the campus's 15th annual Earth Day celebration.

1. University of California, Davis Davis, California

UC Davis is over-the-top thorough about all the nitty-gritty aspects of good stewardship. Lots of time and money go toward a well-rounded set of efforts, including being vigilant about using the school's purchasing power for good, diverting around 70 percent of its trash from landfills, and offering sound transportation solutions: On any given day, 20,000 bikes roam the campus. Pictured above is UC Davis West Village, which opened last October as America's largest planned zero-net-energy residential community. Check out the video tour of Sierra's top school.
