The DoD's Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap (CCAR)

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has led efforts to address climate change and this leadership will increase with the release of the Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap (CCAR). As the world’s single largest energy consumer, this initiative has global implications. The DoD understands the geopolitical consequences of climate change which include conflict acceleration and greater competition for basic resources, both of which will have serious implications.

In 2009 Executive Order 13514 directed all federal agencies to evaluate their climate change risks and vulnerabilities. It also directed agencies to start developing plans for dealing with those impacts. In 2010 DoD elaborated a strategy for action known as 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review.

Since 2009, the DoD has been increasing its reliance on sustainable sources energy including solar power (both stationary and portable solar power) and biofuels. The US military is already using more renewable energy and less fossil fuels. Renewable sources of energy now make up 8.5 percent of the DoD's energy production and procurement. By 2025 the military plans to generate 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources. The DoD is also heavily invested in alternative fuel vehicles, smart microgrids and EV-to-grid systems.

In President Obama's most recent budget, there are approximately $1 billion for energy conservation efforts in the DOD. In 2013 the DoD released the CCAR which outlines the issues associated with climate change. They include operational hardships, reduced training opportunities, reduced access by ground vehicles, infrastructure degradation, increased costs and greater risks from wildfires, coastal flooding and other extreme weather.

The CCAR states that DoD decision-making should be determined by climate science, by fully integrating “climate change considerations into its extant policies, planning, practices and programs.” which includes stressing “the importance of the science-policy interface,” and ensuring that the “best available science” is available to DoD decision-makers.

CCAR also outlines the need for the DoD to cultivate international and domestic partnerships. The document emphasizes collaboration by describing climate change as

“…a unique opportunity to work collaboratively in multilateral forums, promoting a balanced approach that will improve human and environmental security in the region.”

The CCAR has far reaching implications including adding weight to the argument for the rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline.

In addition to the practical elements, the DoD's roadmap has persuasive implications for Republican deniers who continue to resist efforts to engage the war on climate change.

Queens College Sustainability Plan

Queens College Sustainability Plan sets goals in each of the seven pillars of sustainability and the steps to be taken to achieve those goals. These seven pillars are comprised of Energy, Water, Transportation, Recycling/Source Reduction, Procurement, Sustainable Nutrition, Education and Outreach.

1. Energy: A sustainable student residence and an addition to Remsen that incorporated energy efficiency measures. They are currently engaged in several studies of their buildings that will provide recommendations for energy efficient retrofits for building upgrades. They are working towards to have a solar project and a green roof. They are also working on a menu of energy savings projects in their energy audit of their facilities and they plan to implement any that are financially feasible. New equipment is evaluated in terms of its energy-efficiency. With adequate funding, their goal is to replace all of their outdoor lighting with either LED or induction lighting.

2. Water: They are focused on bathroom retro fits to save water including water-efficient toilet flushes and sensor activated sink faucets. They have a long-term goal of having some type of “grey water” project.

3. Transportation: They have Zip Cars, the car sharing vendor, on campus. They will continue to expand the percentage of our fleet that is either electric or hybrid. They will also create incentives for the use of alternative transportation, like biking, public transportation, and car pooling

4. Recycling/Source Reduction: They will reduce the total amount of waste produced and expand the percentage of the waste that is recycled. They will continue to use technology to reduce their use of paper, moving more or their processes and communication online. They will examine the amount of printing and copying and reduce their consumption. Their dining services will explore composting.

5. Procurement: They are now purchasing paper that has 100% recycled content for copying. They will expand the percentage of products that are “green”. They will continue to use “cradle to grave” sustainable products, like carpeting that has recycled elements and is recyclable at the end of its life cycle. They will engage in a mail initiative to reduce the amount of unwanted mail that comes to the campus.

6. Sustainable Nutrition: They have signed a 10 year contract with Chartwells, their food vendor that incorporates sustainable practices and goals including using “green” service ware, local sourcing, and recycling.

7. Education and Outreach: They will continue their education and outreach efforts through a website, ‘green” events and other means. They will increase student, faculty, and staff engagement. They will increase the number of courses they offer that have an environmental focus. Their faculty will continue the important research they are doing on environmental topics.

The Natural Step Framework

The Natural Step (TNS)Framework it is a comprehensive model for planning in complex systems. It is openly published and free for all to use. The TNS Framework is based on systems thinking; recognizing that what happens in one part of a system affects every other part. This scientifi­cally rigorous Framework gives organisations the tools to perform a gap analysis using the lens of sustainability, and then work toward closing the gap. Furthermore, The Natural Step Framework complements other sustainability tools and methodologies, such as life cycle analysis or environmental management systems, by providing the context and strategic vision that makes them more effective.

The TNS Framework gives an organisation the tools to look at the whole picture, understand the rules of the game, define success, and move towards it together. It does this by developing a common language and understanding in order to facilitate cooperation. This allows for more effective communications and consensus building to realize a vision.

The TNS Framework uses an upstream approach that anticipates and avoids problems before they occur, rather than reacting to their downstream effects.

The Natural Step Framework has helped hundreds of different organisations around the world integrate sustainable development into their strategic planning and create long lasting transformative change. It is constantly being used, tested, refined and developed.

Aveda's emphasis on planet friendly approach to business has helped make the company one of the world's leading hair and skin care manufacturers. Even after the company was acquired by Estée Lauder, this mission remains the driving force at Aveda.

Video: Creating a Culture of Sustainability



The way to achieve corporate sustainability is by creating the culture from the ground up. Leading sustainability expert and author of Capitalism at the Crossroads, Stuart L. Hart, believes that when sustainability is viewed from the appropriate set of business lenses, leaders can create a culture to align their organization's strategies and people to improve performance and shareholder value. In this video you can learn more about Hart's sustainability framework that helps leaders and organizations harmonize their concerns for the planet with their strategies for growth, innovation and profitability.

Stuart L. Hart is the Samuel C. Johnson Chair in Sustainable Global Enterprise and Professor of Management at Cornell University's Johnson School of Management. He is also Founder and President of Enterprise for a Sustainable World. Professor Hart is one of the world's top authorities on the implications of environment and poverty for business strategy. He has published more than 70 papers and authored or edited seven books with over 5,000 Google Scholar citations in all. His article "Beyond Greening: Strategies for a Sustainable World" won the McKinsey Award for Best Article in the Harvard Business Review for 1997 and helped launch the movement for corporate sustainability. With C.K. Prahalad, Hart also wrote the pathbreaking 2002 article "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid," which provided the first articulation of how business could profitably serve the needs of the four billion poor in the developing world. His best-selling book, Capitalism at the Crossroads, published in 2005 was selected by Cambridge University as one of the top 50 books on sustainability of all-time; the third edition of the book was published in 2010.

Midwest Best Practices Conference for Sustainable Communities

A Midwest conference is helping communities to implement practices that will insure a sustainable future for generations to come. The midwest is joining commununities across America in developing initiatives for more sustainable communities.

Communities throughout the Midwest are looking at ways to plan for growth that will minimize impact while improving the quality of life.

Some of these efforts include promoting walkable, mixed-use communities; minimizing urban sprawl thereby reducing the need for costly infrastructure improvements; and supporting planning policies to ensure the region has enough farmland, open space and clean water to meet current and future demands.

On June 30th 2010, Cliffbreakers Conference Center in Rockford IL will host a sustainability conference for communities. The one-day conference will address best practices for sustainable communities.

More specifically, the conference will address the issues of applying sustainable principles to transportation and infrastructure and implementing best planning practices from watershed protection to conservation design. Three tracks will be held focusing on Transportation, Green Infrastructure and Conservation Practices.
