Event - Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Training Program

Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Training Program with take place on Feb 21 to Feb 24, 2013, in Toronto, Ontario.

Green Roof Design 101: Introductory Course will take place on February 21st, 2013. This introductory training course on green roof infrastructure design presents many of the tools and techniques needed to meet your green roof project objectives on schedule, to specification, and within budget.

Green Roof Infrastructure: Design & Installation 201 Friday, February 22nd, 2013 An immensely practical course that provides participants with in-depth information on the multitude of green roof implementation issues from first client meetings through scheduling, insurance and permit issues, site analysis, construction considerations and more.

Green Roof Waterproofing and Drainage 301 Saturday, February 23rd, 2013 This course will provide participants with an overview of waterproofing and drainage construction and maintenance for green roof assemblies. It lays out technical vocabulary and materials and presents detailed design solutions and implementation best management practices for waterproofing and drainage in green roofs.

Green Roof Plants and Growing Media 401 Sunday, February 24th, 2013 This course will provide participants with an overview of plants and growing media design considerations and maintenance for green roof assemblies. It establishes design and implementation best management practices for plants and growing media in green roofs. Space is limited. Reserve your seat now.

Tours:Tours of local projects will be offered in conjunction with this event.

Tuition:Tuition for each course is $399 CDN + HST, or $374 CDN + HST for GRHC Individual Members. Tuition includes course materials, lunch, and refreshments. If paying by cheque, please note it must be received in our office no later than one week before the event.

15 Institutions Offering 50 Green Certificate Programs

There is a large and growing number of certificate programs that are designed to meet the demand for a wide range of green skills. Unlike many other sustainability oriented degrees these certificate programs are often less time intensive. While many of these certificate programs are part of traditional academic environments like universities and colleges, others are part of online educational settings and are tailored to the schedules of working professionals. Here are 15 institutions and a broad cross section of 50 green certificate programs that they offer:
  1. Aquinas College has a Professional Certificate Program in Sustainable Business.
  2. Anaheim University offers an Online Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Management.
  3. San Diego State University College of Extended Studies offers professional Certificates in three sustainable areas: Green building, energy management and sustainable practices.
  4. Irvine Valley College is a community college that offers Zero Waste certification for people seeking green jobs.
  5. The European Energy Centre offers a course called Understanding Policies and Finances - Fast Track to a Renewable Energy Consultancy Job, which earns the successful student the internationally recognized Galileo Master Certificate
  6. University of Vermont’s sustainability certificate programs teach students how to address such areas as reducing waste and conserving energy, water and other natural resources.
  7. The Blue Planet Academy offers five green certificate programs: Agronomist, Electrical Engineer RES (Renewable Energy Sources), Environment Expert, Recyclist, Water Technologist.
  8. The University of Washington’s Professional and Continuing Education department offers a certificate in Green IT.
  9. The University of Washington offers a certificate in Sustainable Transportation.
  10. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) offers specific certification for PV installers, PV technical sales and solar heating installers.
  11. There is also NABCEP certification for small wind installers.
  12. The Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) provides training and certification for PV Installers. They offer three levels of certification: Apprentice, Specialist, and Technician.
  13. ISSP offers a Sustainability Professionals Certificate. 
  14. Roof Integrated Solar Energy (RISE) offers a Certified Solar Roofing Professional (CSRP) credential for rooftop solar energy installation and maintenance.
  15. Green Education Online offers 21 very short duration green training modules that provide certificates upon completion:

    NABCEP Sales Certification

    On July 16, 2012 the NABCEP Sales Certification training will be taking place at Atlantic Cape Community College, Mays Landing Campus East from 6pm – 9pm. The fee is $1,299 (Tuition $499, Materials $250, Lab $550). This NABCEP approved training is a PV Entry Level Exam based on a set of learning objectives developed by NABCEP Committee of PV subject matter experts. Concepts will include: Qualify the Customer; Site Analysis; Conceptual Design; Financial Costs, Incentives and Savings; Financial Benefit Analysis and Financing; Nonfinancial Benefit Analysis; Performance Analysis; and Preparing Proposals.

    Foresight NEXT Professional Development Program (Sustainability Courses)

    Four European Environmental Events in July (Part One)

    In the first half of July 2012 there are four notable environmentally themed events that will be taking place in Europe. The first is a summer course on European Environmental Law, the second is an environmental finance event, the third is an event focusing on sustainable development, and the fourth is an event focusing on carbon finance for renewable energy.

    1. Summer Course on EU Environmental Law

    On July second to July sixth a course on European environmental law, hosted by ERA, will take place in Trier, Germany. This five-day summer course will provide a thorough introduction to EU environmental law. ERA / Trier, Germany.

    On July third a finance conference hosted by Environmental Finance will take place in London. This forward-looking conference will analyse and debate the most effective ways for investors to generate environmental, social and financial returns.

    On July third to July fifth, the first International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development will take place at the Wessex Institute of Technology in New Forest, UK.

    Education For A Sustainable Future is an independent film production and has been uploaded online for free download and distribution. This film reviews how today's practices in schools are socially unsustainable.     Profiting from the New Rules of Green Marketing by Jacquie Ottman

    On November 29th and 30th Humber College in Toronto Ontario is hosting a course and workshop entitled, Profiting from the New Rules of Green Marketing by Jacquie Ottman (SC 130). This workshop designed to bring to life the principles, strategies, tools and frameworks discussed in the award-winning book: The New Rules of Green Marketing: Strategies, Tools and Inspiration for Sustainable Branding by Jacquelyn Ottman (Berrett-Koehler, 2011).

    Jacquie Ottman is considered to be North America's foremost expert on green marketing. After spending over a decade in major NY advertising agencies learning the marketing ropes from the likes of Procter & Gamble and Ralston Purina, Jacquie founded J. Ottman Consulting, Inc. and pioneered green marketing. Her goal: apply her finely-honed consumer packaged goods skills, her creative bent for dreaming up new products, and her strategic instincts to the toughest issues involved in meeting consumers' needs sustainably.

    She and her colleagues have helped more than 60 Fortune 500 businesses and various U.S. government labeling programs, including U.S. EPA's Energy Star and the USDA's new USDA Certified Biobased label, develop and launch exciting new products and create credible and profitable strategies for reaching mainstream green consumers.

    Ottman is a founding co-chair of the Sustainable Brands conference, at which she has given several keynote addresses. She is also the founding co-chair of the Sustainable Business Committee of the Columbia Business School Alumni Club of New York, and its wildly successful "Making Green from Green Certificate Series", now in its third year. In 2004, she created the Design: Green educational initiative under an US EPA Innovation Grant with the goal of jumpstarting eco-design education among practitioners and students. The former co-chair of the NYC chapter of O2, the global network of green designers and marketers, for seven years she chaired the jury of the American Marketing Association's Special Edison Awards for Environmental Achievement.

    She is the author of the newly released, The New Rules of Green Marketing: Strategies, Tools and Inspiration for Sustainable Branding (Berrett-Koehler (U.S.), Greenleaf Publishing (U.K.), February 2011, which has been named by the University of Cambridge (U.K) as a top 40 Sustainability book, and by Ecolibris as a top ten green book. Previous books include: Green Marketing: Opportunity for Innovation (McGrawHill, 1993), hailed as "the definitive text on the subject." She keeps the business community abreast of her learning by writing for her blog, Jacquie Ottman's Green Marketing Blog, and numerous business publications.

    On Thursday, November 17, 2011 between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM (EST) a complementary webinar will take place that will review sustainability in the curriculum.     Building a Sustainability Strategy Online Course

    This interactive webinar course on sustainability is composed of four modules. It is 1.5 hours per week for 4 weeks (October 4, October 11, October 18 and October 25). The course starts at 1:00 pm EST and ends at 2:30 pm EST.

    Course Description

    An organization's sustainability strategy can have a significant impact upon its reputation with customers, employees and within the supply chain. False starts and poorly integrated efforts are costly, hurt the creditability of the initiative, the implementation team and the company.

    This workshop will provide you with experienced advice, proven frameworks, best practices and tools to simplify the sustainability process. You will also have the opportunity to work on your own sustainability planning process and receive coaching during the workshop. Our sustainability workshops are also a great place to build sustainability networks and communities of practice.

    Learning Objectives
    Using examples, case studies, best practices, hands-on activities and participation through the on-line Community of Practice and "Peer to Peer" dialogue, you will:

    • List the steps in developing a sustainability strategy and begin to customize them for your organization.
    • Develop a business case for sustainability including drivers, opportunities, risks, issues and challenges.
    • Develop a process for a definition, vision and goals for sustainability for your organization.
    • Create a plan to assess the impact of sustainability on our organization's economic, environmental and social performance.
    • Identify methods for determining sustainability metrics.
    • Discuss methods for prioritizing and implementation of sustainability initiatives.
    • Understand best practices for integrating sustainability into corporate governance, operations and the culture of the organization.
    • Establish a draft plan for tracking progress toward targets; and reporting achievements and progress towards sustainability goals.

    Module 1 (October 4, 2011): Understanding Sustainability

    In this module participants will:

    Understand current definitions of sustainability, corporate social responsibility and related concepts and choose a definition for their company.

    Compare and contrast different frameworks for sustainability such as The Natural Step, Triple Bottom Line, ISO 26000 & Corporate Social Responsibility and general practices and protocols such as ISO 14001, Global Reporting Initiative. Choose a framework for their company.
    Examine the importance of current worldviews, and the essential nature of systems, futures and critical thinking in sustainability program design and implementation. Discuss the 10 steps and organizational structure for sustainability plan development and implementation.

    Module 2 (October 11, 2011): Making the Business Case & Creating a Shared Vision

    In this module participants will:

    Examine the drivers for sustainability.
    Outline and share the business case for their company.

    Module 3 (October 18, 2011): Conducting the Gap Assessment & Establishing Sustainability Metrics
