  • Green California Summit 2011

The Green Market is proud to be an outreach partner for the fifth Green California Summit. This event is focused on identifying strategies and technologies that offer both economic and environmental benefits. The 2011 summit will take place at the Sacramento Convention Center on April 18-20.

Sustainability is increasingly being mandated or incentivized and as sustainability moves from concept to implementation, the government of California is leading the way. The Golden State has abundant renewable resources and an unmatched combination of forward-thinking green policy, technology expertise, voter support and purchasing power. Even in recession, it is one of the world’s largest economies. The right partnerships between the public and private sectors can enable California to develop a high-tech, high wage green economy.

The Green California Summit has emerged as the state’s most important annual forum for innovations in policy, technology and practice. With over 200 exhibitors, and more than 6,000 attendees expected, the 2011 Summit is shaping up to be the biggest green government conference ever.

Led by an Advisory Board that includes leaders from government and industry, the Summit brings to life the best in green policy and practice through education sessions, keynote presentations, an Expo featuring green products and services and the Summit’s annual Leadership Awards.

The Summit is the place to learn directly from policy makers, government agencies, facilities managers, architects, engineers and product suppliers. They will share valuable information about the future and how to make the most of what is coming. Educational sessions will cover topics ranging from energy efficiency and green purchasing, to plans for a smart grid and green economic development. New for 2011 is the “CALGreen Academy,” a special series of sessions focused on California’s new mandatory green building code.

The theme of the 2011 Summit is “Green Paths to Economic Recovery,” a topic that will be addressed in a variety of ways – from sessions highlighting the savings attainable through energy and water efficiency to a keynote presentation on green job creation by venture capitalist Elton B. Sherwin, Jr., author of “Addicted to Energy – A Venture Capitalist’s Perspective on How to Save our Economy and Our Climate.” General session attendees will also have a chance to get an update on the Greenwise Sacramento intiative from Mayor Kevin Johnson.

Readers of The Green Market will benefit from a 20 percent discount (group discounts are also available). For information or to register go to www.green-technology.org/gcsummit or call 626-577-5700. Green Market readers should enter the promo code GRMARKET when registering.

    Montreal 2010 World Energy Congress

The World Energy Congress is committed to working toward responsible growth that reconciles economic development, environmental protection, and the reduction of global inequalities.

The 2010 Congress, was held in Montreal, Québec (Canada) between September 13 -16. The World Energy Congress is the premier international multi-energy forum with exhibitors from the field. Every three years the World Energy Council organizes the Congress. It brings together approximately 3500 top world leaders in the field of energy, coming from industry, governments, and international organizations, as well as the media, universities and energy industry associations.

Throughout the duration of the conference, at precisely 8:40 AM, a well known speaker addressed the conference audience. On Monday, it was Daniel Yergin, the chairman of the IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates (IHS CERA), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Prize,” a history of the oil industry. On Tuesday it was Fatih Birol, the IEA chief economist and the principal author of the much-awaited annual World Energy Outlook. On Wednesday, Lester R. Brown, the president of the Earth Policy Institute. And on Thursday the concluding day of the Congress, Pascal Lamy, the director general of the World Trade Organization.

Special efforts have been made to ensure that at this years Congress includes developing nations, youth and the public. Beyond discussions about the future of energy prices the Congress discussed some very contentious issues including assistance to the developing world.

It is more than a bit ironic that as OPEC was celebrating its 50th anniversary, the world's energy leaders were convening to discuss alternatives to fossil fuels. Although all the major names in the energy industry were present at the Congress, OPEC was conspicuously absent.

The energy industry is ready to begin building a future beyond oil, however, due to the urgency of the climate change issue, governments will have to get actively involved in the growth of clean energy.

    Conference on Pricing Carbon Emissions

Wesleyan University, in conjunction with the Price Carbon Campaign, an umbrella organization of climate-policy advocates, is convening a fall conference that will address new approaches to carbon pricing. Wesleyan University’s College of the Environment was established in 2009 to help students become better stewards of the Earth.

Wesleyan's Carbon Pricing Conference begins Friday, November 19, 2010 and runs through to Sunday, November 21, 2010. Headline speakers include climatologist Dr. James Hansen, author-activist Bill McKibben, and environmental-justice lawyer and advocate Angela Johnson Meszaros.

Carbon pricing is vital to reducing CO2. According to economist Charles Komanoff, director of the Carbon Tax Center, “only with a predictable and steadily rising price on CO2 emissions—one that rewards sustainable forms of energy without harming Americans—will the US be able to curb our carbon emissions and oil dependence. A direct and transparent fee on fuels’ carbon content will give entrepreneurs and families the incentives they need to put industries and households on a profitable low-carbon diet.”

Despite the need for large scale reductions of CO2, carbon emissions continue to increase and this is destabilizing the Earth’s climate and driving global warming. The conspicuous absence of legislative progress in the US this summer makes the carbon emissions pricing conference prescient.

According to Laura Bonham, deputy director of Progressive Democrats of America.“With the continuing failure of the cap/trade/offset mechanism to gain support in Congress, it’s time for climate policy makers and concerned citizens to rethink carbon-pricing options. This conference will allow a broad spectrum of climate activists to seek a common agenda that will define the basic principles of good climate legislation, beginning with putting a clear price on carbon.”

The Green Building Focus Conference and Expo

Education was the focus of the 2010 Green Building Focus Conference and Expo. The event was a showcase for the latest in sustainable building development.

The Green Building Focus was held between August 24th and 27th, and hosted by the city of Birmingham, Alabama. The city of Birmingham is the largest construction hub in the Southeast, and it is quickly becoming the region’s hub for green building activity as well.

With the growing demand for green building, this year’s conference sought to inform and educate the region’s architects, engineers, home owners, construction professionals, faculty and students.

The Green Building Focus explored recent trends, technologies and materials available in the green building movement. The conference also addressed topics including, “The Greening of Corporate America,” “Private and Federal Incentives for Green Projects,” and “International Green Construction Code.”

There were workshops and a business expo with more than 150 vendors showcasing environmentally friendly products and services and featuring some of the world's leading authorities on sustainable development.

Speakers included Karan Grover, an internationally acclaimed architect and winner of the 2004 USGBC platinum award for greenest building on Earth. Another conference speaker, Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos said, "It takes leadership from the top all the way down to the public buying into it."

Despite the challenges reviewed by Mayor Petelos, the Green Building Focus was a window into the innovations that are driving the growth of green homes.
