Join Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for a discussion of current efforts to price carbon emissions. Co-sponsored by Arizona State University and moderated by Robert Litterman, co-founder of Kepos Capital, this panel will explore questions such as:

  • What is the most promising legislative pathway to pricing carbon emissions?
  • What does a bipartisan solution look like?
  • Where should legislative efforts focus - at the state or federal level?

While federal progress on climate change may have stalled, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and others on the right and left have reinvigorated efforts to use market incentives to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Join this important conversation hosted by Arizona State University's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, as our panelists explore these questions and more:
  • What are the most likely pathways towards pricing carbon emissions?
  • Will federal or state legislative efforts gain greater traction?

Trump's America: State of Lies

Donald Trump deflects, distracts and exaggerates, but he is best known for his straight out lies. He has proven to be a master of the double-down. When he is caught lying he just lies some more. Even before he took office the New York Times wrote a piece titled, "Trump, Trapped in His Lies, Keeps Lying. Sad!". It is indeed sad, but the understandable outrage at his repeated deceptions misses the point.

Dishonest Don's malfeasance will live in infamy, however, his mendacity serves a darker end-game then most people realize. The unreality king lies to muddy the waters making it hard for casual observers to understand the issues, and that is the point.

The liar-in-chief has repeatedly deceived the American people and his own staff. The spin king lies about his business, he lies about his policy positions and now we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he lies about his philandering.

Trump's lying quite likely started shortly after his birth.  Since then he has lied about his education and his achievements as a private citizen. He continued to lie as a candidate for president, he lied as president-elect and kept on lying after inauguration day and throughout his first year and a half in office. There is every reason to believe that he will keep on lying until the very end.

Forrest Trump may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he has shown a commitment to subterfuge never before seen in the Oval Office. He may be a snake oil salesman but he is also the most accomplished charlatan the world has ever known. In his book the 70 year old sociopath-toddler dubbed his deceit with the equally deceptive moniker "truthful hyperbole".

Many expected that Trump's presidency would be defined by subterfuge. Washington Post Media Columnist Margaret Sullivan, correctly predicted that Trump’s presidency would be a "hellscape of lies and distorted reality." Just days after the fraud of fifth avenue declared victory Politico warned that democracy was in the cross-hairs.

Trump told dozens of lies on the campaign trail and according to the Washington Post he lied more than 300 times in his first hundred days in office.  In his first six months Trump is reported to have lied 414 times. By August the Washington Post claimed that Trump lied more than 1000 times and by May 2018 Trump is reported to have made 3,251 false or misleading claims. Even members of his own party, including Bob Corker, have called Trump a liar. Corker said Trump is an, "utterly untruthful president".

Given his propensity for dishonesty it should come as no surprise that Trump has not kept his campaign pledges. A Huffpost article lists at least a dozen broken promises and Robert Reich reviewed 20.

To support his alternate reality the golden wrecking ball is waging war against those who could expose his lies, namely science and the free press. Shortly after declaring victory Trump floated the idea of not having a White House press office, doing no press briefings, closing down the White House press room, and only having a single pool reporter covering the president. In March 2017 Trump barred media outlets that did not give them favorable coverage and then in May Trump said he was going to end White House press briefings altogether, because "it is not possible" for his staff to speak with "perfect accuracy" to the American public. On July 25th CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins was barred from attending an Open Press event in the Rose Garden because the Trump administration did not like the questions she asked.

The only way we can face this well honed turpitude is by judiciously confronting their lies in all their forms.  Fact based reporting is our best weapon against corrupt, self serving politicians. The press is key and journalists know what they have to do. They have learned how to fight fake news and how to cover Trump

Despite this administration's efforts there is reason to believe that mainstream media is winning the war.  As of April 2017 Trump saw a 17 percent decline in the number of voters that believed him. Although his lies have accelerated, a June Public Policy Poll (PPP) reveals that more than half of Americans believe mainstream media while only a bit more than a third believe Trump. According to another recent poll, 61 percent of Americans think Trump regularly has trouble telling the truth. Americans do not appear to be as gullible as the commander and chief would like them to be.

Nonetheless, the sheer volume of deceit is hard to keep up with and that is a central component of Trump's strategy. As explained in a Politico article, Trump's lies are meant to confuse: "When we are overwhelmed with false, or potentially false, statements, our brains pretty quickly become so overworked that we stop trying to sift through everything." This is sometimes called cognitive load and it is how the nation's chief deceiver short circuits the truth. To posit a message he wants to impart he simply repeats the lie endlessly to create something called illusory truth.

Trump obfuscates in many ways. He commonly says one thing than does another. This allows him to portray himself as somewhat moderate while ultimately reverting to a far more partisan position. Gun safety and DACA are but two examples. He often says two diametrically opposed things in close succession or all at once. His comments about Charlottesville illustrate this point, "there are fine people on both sides" the new furor infamously said after neo-Nazis clashed with demonstrators. However, there is no better example than his relationship with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.

Multiple branches of US intelligence have repeatedly made it clear that under Putin's direction, Russia meddled in the election in 2016 to help elect Trump.  Putin's pet initially dismissed this assessment then under pressure he seemed to change his mind. Since then Benedict Donald has flip-flopped on this issue many times.

Trump recently ignited a firestorm of controversy when he stood next to Putin in Helsinki and said, "he sees no reason why Russia would meddle". When faced with bipartisan criticism he offered yet more double speak. Reading from a script he claimed that instead of using the word "would" he misspoke and used the word "wouldn't". However, the boychurian candidate immediately went off script and added, "could have been other people also".

Although his staff tried to re-frame his comments the meeting with the press ended with Trump saying "no" in response to a question about Russia's ongoing meddling. However, this is at odds with the bipartisan consensus that the Russians continue to meddle as we head into the midterm elections of 2018.

Captain Chaos also likes to control the narrative by co-opting the criticisms leveled against him. He accuses others of the very thing he is guilty of.  He rails against "fake news" when he is its leading purveyor.  While on the campaign trail Don the Con accused the Democrats of collusion with the Russians and he was also fond of calling Hilary a "crook". Most recently he has suggested that Russia may be trying to hack the midterm elections to favor the Democrats.

When Hilary called Trump "Putin's puppet" during a debate Trump responded with the rapier wit of a 9 year old saying, "your the puppet". Trump acts like a disturbed child and a bully, unless he is in the presence of Putin, then he cowers like a chastened school-boy. Most Americans are troubled by his subservience and they object to his overt pandering. According to a recent poll 64 percent of Americans think Trump is not tough enough on Russia.

It may be months before we learn what Putin has on Trump. Whether it is money from Russian oligarchs or a pee-pee tape, the world is reeling from his supplication. Whatever form of coercion is at play undermining the truth is a vital component of this strategy. Putin's control over the leader of the free world is ultimately meant to sew discord and breed chaos.

As President Obama explained in a speech commemorating the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandala, authoritarian populist leaders reject objective reality and put self serving false narratives in their place. Obama sounded the alarm about the dangers of disconnecting policy from the facts.

Trump's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers the best example of policy un-tethered to the truth. Under Trump's leadership, former EPA administrator Scott Pruitt declared war on science and he obfuscated to justify policy positions like opposing the Paris Climate Accord and the Clean Power Plan. Although the science proving anthropogenic climate change is clear, Pruitt referenced pseudo-science to cast aspersions on the overwhelming body of evidence. Pruitt's contempt for science was part of his strategy to execute a politically motivated policy agenda that panders to polluters.

Trump shares Pruitt's aversion to science. He is the only president in modern history who has opted to do without a science advisor and his disdain for science precludes informed policy.

Disparaging science makes it easier for politicians to line their pockets by making policy decisions that serve industry. This is particularly true of the fossil fuel industry. Elected leaders have been complicit with big polluters through campaigns of disinformation that have caused people to question the veracity of climate change. This deceptive message gets amplified by conservative spin masters and after time the lie assumes the air of a legitimate point of view.

Dictators have long understood the power of using contradictory information to muddy the waters of reality. Successful despots undermine the prevailing narrative and replace it with a countervailing narrative that suits their political ends. Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels said, "If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth."  In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler described a propaganda technique known as "the big lie". These deceptive techniques bear a striking resemblance to Trump's application of truthful hyperbole.

Trump's immigration policy and his remarks in the wake of the Charlottesville tragedy have led many to conclude that Trump is a fascist carnival barker.  However, his thinly veiled racism is about more than just contempt for certain ethnic groups. Trump along with his White Power advisor Stephen Miller have crafted an immigration policy that recapitulates an age old formula of social control. Vulnerable minorities have been singled out and vilified by countless regimes throughout history. Stoking fears causes people to coalesce around hatreds that unify a political movement.

The Trump administration does not deserve all the credit, Republicans have been playing this game for years, albeit with more subtlety. Long before Hair Trump was the Republican nominee, the GOP was working to marginalize voting blocs that represent a threat to their hold on power. We see evidence of this in both voter suppression and gerrymandering (aka redistricting).

Trump may be the predictable endpoint of Republicanism but not so long ago the GOP was doing everything in its power to keep the gossamer-skinned bully from being the nominee. Now they are working with the rabble-rousing demagogue to achieve their own destructive agenda. They have already succeed in killing climate action and passing a tax-scam. Their next big agenda item will see legislation that will include massive cuts to social security, medicare and medicaid.

There is no doubt that much of what the riptide of regression says is driven by pathological narcissism, however he is also advancing a sinister agenda.  Trump's former chief advisor Steve Bannon is a leading advocate of this dystopia and although he no longer works for the president, the influence of his ideology remains.

Trump lies first and foremost to serve his ego, but this two-bit Caesar's obfuscation is also tied to a devious plot to sabotage democracy. The goal is to kill the basic idea of truth so that false self-serving narratives can flourish. He has already succeeded in undermining domestic and global institutions that have served peace and prosperity since the end of the second world war. If his lies prevail they will replace western liberal democracy with an authoritarian rule that will kill the basic freedoms we take for granted.

GMO's Annual Green Schools Posts in 2017

Each summer and fall the Green Market Oracle (GMO) publishes a series of posts addressing a wide range of green school related subjects. In addition to green buildings, this series reviews hundreds of sustainability-focused schools and accreditation. Last year GMO published 19 articles in this series bringing the total to almost 400.  In 2017 the articles focused on dozens of academic degrees, climate denial in early education, renewable energy and conservation in schools. The first article explains why business schools are getting a failing grade in environmental sustainability.

Business School Sustainability Fail

Research suggests that business schools are not adequately preparing students to meet the challenges of climate change. Sustainability-focused pedagogy is rare. Event - Sustainability Summit 2018: Water

Sustainability Summit 2018 will take place on August 1 at the Tent of Enderun Colleges, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, the Phillipines. Enderun will tackle Water in its third Sustainability Summit.

Over 200 delegates from top corporations, business leaders, government, NGO professionals and the academe will attend the one-day event — to identify and discuss the more pressing issues, trends, synergies and challenges and ideate achievable and lasting solutions for one of the world’s more critical sustainability concerns: WATER.

Water is defined as a resource, a risk, a livelihood, a right. Complex and changing, water is an interweaving force in human society. From energy and infrastructure to agriculture and public health, almost all industries and sectors interact with water in some capacity. Yet, as with any natural element, water poses risks and challenges that become more severe with extreme weather changes, rising populations, and increasing urbanization (just to name a few).

The goal of Sustainability Summit 2018 is to take the same multidimensional approach as in the previous summits to identify and discuss the more pressing issues, trends, synergies, and challenges to ideate achievable and lasting solutions for one of the world’s more critical sustainability concerns: WATER. Policymakers, Industry movers, Business leaders, NGO Professionals and Academia will be brought together in a dynamic moderated forum to discuss the more prevalent issues involving Water as it relates to: Scarcity and Wastage, Energy, Agriculture, Infrastructure, and Public Health.

Description of the five moderated panel sessions
  • Scarcity and wastage: According to National Geographic, “fourteen of the world’s 20 megacities are now experiencing water scarcity or drought conditions.” If we are to ensure availability of water for all by 2030 (UN SDG 6), what are the causes of water scarcity, and who are the most vulnerable? On the other hand, how can we eliminate waste from production of materials to consumption? Hear from government agencies, utility companies, and development authorities as they strategize beyond the promise of “water for all” to a reality of sustainable water management in the 21st century.

  • Energy (Big Industry, Renewables, Watershed): Water is a powerful force. It can shape the earth, transport people and materials, and even power electrical grids. As humans increasingly turn to water as a renewable resource, we must also remember its cyclical nature. How can we optimize the water-energy nexus without damaging watersheds and affecting ecosystems? Engage with diverse stakeholders from the electric and mining industries as well as the resource management sector on the growing role of water in sustainable energy, using the natural water cycle as inspiration.

  • Agriculture (Farming, Agroforestry, Seafood): Food and water have been inseparable for millennia. With the dawn of climate change and extreme droughts, the environmental aspects of food security are more apparent than ever before. How can we retool farming and fishing practices to sustain our natural environments? Better yet, how can we integrate conservation efforts with opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain? Join leaders in agripreneurship, aquaculture, food and beverage, and forest conservation as they dive into the possibilities of water and agriculture.

  • Infrastructure (Distribution & Consumption, Urban Development): Technology, economics, urban development, and sustainable communities: can we make our water systems work for future generations? From irrigation to refill stations, how can we rethink infrastructure in ways that will sync with water sources and provide better standards of living? Tap into the minds of leaders in development, utilities, and finance as they merge strategies to build better rather than bigger.

  • Public Health (Waste Issues): While water is a source of life, it can also be a vehicle of disease and destruction. Especially in the Philippines, lack of proper hygiene and sanitation systems combined with an increase of extreme weather patterns put millions of lives at risk. Luckily, possibilities for risk management exist in more industries and sectors than typically thought. The question is, what can different stakeholders do to unite and protect populations before illness and disaster strikes? Don’t miss the chance to identify crossroad opportunities in public health and water with representatives from the public, private, and NGO sectors.

The panelists and speakers present during the conference include:
  • Dr. J.R. Nereus O. Acosta, Philippine Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Solid Waste Management Act, and Biodiversity Protection Act Principal Author
  • Federico Noe Goco, UDENNA Water Program & Operations Manager

Pruitt's War Against Science

During his rule as EPA administrator Scott Pruitt waged war on science. He ignored evidence, undermined scientific research programs, purged scientists, and demoted employees who disagreed with him. He has also replaced many of the EPA’s independent scientific advisors with industry insiders.

Incredible as it may sound Pruitt made it known that he does not support fact based policy decisions. He refused to craft  policy based on science and he repeatedly made inaccurate scientific claims. This includes untruthful statements intended to undermine the veracity of anthropogenic climate change. He once said, “I would not agree that [carbon dioxide]’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see.”

A couple of months before he resigned Pruitt advanced a proposal to grant himself the power to censor science by giving himself the authority to determine which scientific findings would be used to set new health and environmental standards.

Pruitt also undermined science in other ways. He has prevented EPA policymakers from using scientific studies unless the raw data behind them is made public. As a consequence the EPA can no longer base policy decisions on scientific studies that rely on information like medical studies, personal health data, and clinical reports. This compels the EPA to subject high quality research to untenable levels of disclosure. The rule favors industry by ignoring research that exposes the sources and affects of pollution and chemicals.

According to ThinkProgress, the EPA censored the facts about an acutely toxic pesticide called chlorpyrifos. Although the former EPA chief had proposed banning the neurotoxin, the EPA under Pruitt moved to protect it. One of Pruitt's parting gifts to industry was the removal of restrictions for super-polluting trucks.

Pruitt is already infamous for killing the Clean Power Plan and encouraging Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. However, one of the most destructive and enduring aspects of his legacy will be his war on science.

In a speech commemorating Nelson Mandala's 100th birthday, President Obama decried populist authoritarian governments who spin lies to feed a false narrative. “Without facts, there is no basis for cooperation." Obama said. “Unfortunately, too much of politics today seems to reject the very concept of objective truth. People just make stuff up.”

Pruitt's actions as head of the EPA are part of a wider more sinister agenda. The war on science is an important front in the wider war against democracy.

Pruitt is Gone but his Destructive Legacy will Endure

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned on July 5th in response to a litany of controversies including his relationships with lobbyists, inappropriate spending, and dozens of other abuses of his office. Pruitt is well known as a climate denier who is in a deeply committed long-term relationship with the oil and gas industry. His reign at the head of the EPA was defined by his efforts to kill Obama-era climate regulations and rules designed to protect Americans from pollution.

The NRDC's Rea Suh said, "[Pruitt's resignation] is a major victory for our environment, our health, and our future." A Beacon article announcing Pruitt's departure read, "The EPA lost its top grifter". The article continued saying, "Scott Pruitt was likely the most scandal-ridden, brown-nosing, oil-loving, climate-denying administrator to ever walk the halls of the EPA." Senator Bernie Sanders accurately summed up the sentiments of many when he called Pruitt, "the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency".

Pruitt is the focus of almost 20 different federal investigations of misconduct. Republican lawmakers questioned his conduct and some called for his removal. Even Republicans who walk in lock step with Trump were highly critical of the EPA chief including Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, who said "[Pruitt] is about as swampy as you get."

Pruitt's long list of controversies included using EPA resources to help secure work for his wife, lavish spending and subsidized housing courtesy of the dirty energy lobby. A full list of controversies surrounding the former EPA boss can be found in a six page letter from a group of Democratic lawmakers.

Here are a few examples of actions that forced Trump's favorite cabinet minister out of one of the most corrupt administrations in US history.
  • Pruitt met with a mining company CEO last year and just hours afterward told his staff to withdraw a plan to protect a watershed in Alaska from certain mining activities.
  • He circumvented procedure to give big raises to two of his top aides misusing a 1996 provision in the Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Shortly after Pruitt gained access to a subsidized D.C. apartment tied to an energy company's lobbying firm the EPA green-lit that company’s pipeline project.
  • The EPA signed a $120,000 contract with Definers Public Affairs, a communications firm run by influential Republicans that helps its clients “influence media narratives.” (After Mother Jones broke the news, the contract was cancelled).
Republicans have described Pruitt as an "embarrassment". Trump sycophant Trey Gowdy investigated the EPA chief in his capacity as Oversight Committee Chairman.

Even more egregious than his ethics controversies and financial abuses, Pruitt flouted his duties as EPA administrator by ignoring his core mandate to protect the health of Americans. As reported by the New York Times, the EPA's own data indicates that the agency no longer spends much time enforcing the remaining environmental rules. Pruitt's legacy at the EPA is about more than just environmental inaction, he is responsible for decimating hard won environmental protections.  He led assaults on clean air, he diluted water safeguards, and he stalled toxic chemical bans.

Generations to come will talk about the damage he has done.  History will remember Pruitt for his efforts to kill or weaken as many as 40 EPA rules (the New York Times reports that there are a total of 76 rules on their way out at the behest of the Trump administration). During his 16 months in office Pruitt met regularly with fossil fuel industry executives but rarely with environmental or public health groups. His tenure was defined by his advocacy on behalf of the fossil fuel industry and his legacy is his pro-polluter agenda.

Pruitt leaves the EPA having dismantled decades of environmental regulations, and having slashed staffing at the agency to levels not seen since the Reagan era. He not only eradicated climate change from the agency’s website, he tried to make climate denial official EPA policy.

The good news is that Pruitt is gone the bad news is that until a permanent replacement can be vetted by the Senate he is being replaced by his deputy Andrew Wheeler who is another fossil fuel industry paramour. Wheeler is a coal industry lobbyist, who worked for James Inhofe (R-Okla.), one of the nation's leading climate deniers.

Pruitt and Trump share a lot in common. Like his boss the former EPA head repeatedly lied to justify his actions, this includes his pretext for killing the Clean Power Plan.  In addition to outright lies he commonly misinformed the public with misleading talking points. To see a partial list of Pruitt's subterfuge click here. Pruitt also shares Trump's penchant for fake news. Both men like to attack honest reporters and they both like to share false information from climate deniers.

The former head of the EPA was a deceitful spin machine right up until the end. In classic Trump-style hypocritical double-speak Pruitt explained his departure by citing the "toxic environment" in politics.
