World Water Week Raises Awareness through Gamification

A new game designed to promote sustainable water resources management has been released for World Water Week. The game is called Aqua Republica and was created through a partnership between UNEP and DHI along with the collaboration of a number of others.

The game not only raises water awareness it is designed to help build capacity in some of the most critical issues in water resources management.

In this game participants make decisions about water management and in the process they learn about the connectivity and importance of water resources, as well as the need for careful management.

While the world of Aqua Republica is fictitious, the challenges of sustainably managing a limited supply of water resources in a situation of growing demand between multiple users and uses are very much based on real life scenarios.

The Growing Problem of Cell Phone Waste

Electronic devices continue to be the fastest growing waste stream in the US and cell phones are a major part of this. In 2011, manufacturers produced more than 1.68 billion wireless phones worldwide. In the United States alone, it’s estimated that fewer than 10 percent of discarded mobile phones will be recycled.

Regular phone upgrades are driving the growth of electronic waste. Companies like Apple regularly upgrade their technology and encourage users to buy new models. This built-in obsolesce is the kind of irresponsible business practices that drive profits but destroy the environment.

AT&T concedes that there is “much work to be done” as millions of devices are discarded every year without being recycled.

Despite the efforts of leading American mobile phone companies like AT&T and Sprint, the US still lags behind Europe when it comes to responsible business practices. A Verdantix study, found that sustainability is still not central to the business strategy and product marketing of the major US telcom firms the way it is for European telecom industry.

AT&T's Record Breaking Recycling for Wireless Devices

As reported in an Environmental Leader article, Guinness World Records have certified that AT&T customers broke a world record by recycling 50,942 wireless devices during a one-week period. In 2011 AT&T collected about three million cell phones for reuse and recycling and the company's new trade in program is expected to help AT&T surpass that number in 2012.

The recycling of these AT&T devices in 2011 avoided sending 25,471 pounds of waste to landfills. In September, AT&T launched a line of phone chargers with housings made of at least 30 percent post-consumer plastics. The chargers are also Energy Star 5-rated, meaning that they use “minimal” power when plugged in.

In July of this year, AT&T was named as the most sustainable US telecoms firm in a study by Verdantix. Also in July, the company launched its eco-ratings system in stores, allowing customers to compare cell phones’ environmental impacts.

Sprint's Industry Leading Cell Phone Recycling

Since 2001, Sprint's takeback program has collected more than 4,000 metric tons of electronic waste which comprises more than 40 million wireless devices. These programs not only keep phones out of landfills they have helped the company avoid more than $1 billion in costs. In 2011 Sprint recycled more than 11 million wireless devices, over 211,000 on average per week. Sprint is the first and only US wireless carrier to outline specific commitments that address electronic waste (e-waste) holistically. Sprint is ranked No. 3 on Newsweek’s Green Rankings of American companies and it is the only wireless carrier to crack the top 25 for Newsweek's Green Rankings of global companies.

Sprint celebrated America Recycles Day by raising awareness of the importance of recycling. Sprint has launched a phone recycling pledge where customers can win one of five rewards cards worth $500 (now through Nov. 30). Sprint has also posted a video online that illustrates how old cell phones can gain a “second life” while reducing the amount of electronic waste in the marketplace.

Sprint has been serious about managing electronic waste since 2001. Sprint developed a phone trade-in program and was the first US wireless carrier to provide an instant credit at point of sale, as well as allow customers to bring back any phone from any carrier, now known as the Sprint Buyback program.

Around 40 percent of customers that visit a Sprint retail store participate in the Buyback program. This program benefits the environment, the company and consumers. This has resulted in more than $75 million going back to consumers.

“Making our business more sustainable is really part of our DNA at Sprint,” said Fared Adib, senior vice president of product development and reverse logistics. “You can’t be in our industry, put the amount of product into the market that we do, and not think through the full lifecycle. We’re proud that we’ve been recognized as having the industry’s leading buyback program despite our No. 3 position in the market – and we believe these efforts will contribute to Sprint’s long-term success.”

The fact that Sprint also accepts competitor devices led to Compass Intelligence recognizing the company as having the best trade-in program in the industry for two years in a row.

In September, Sprint was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its leadership as the only wireless carrier to join the EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Electronics Challenge. As a participant, Sprint will strive to send 100 percent of the electronics it collects to third-party certified refurbishers and recyclers and to increase the amount of used electronics collected.

Sprint's Electronics Stewardship Policy, developed with guidance from BSR, Basel Action Network and ABI Research, focuses on the full lifecycle of the electronics it buys and sells. It publicly states Sprint will strive to design and buy greener electronics, extend the useful life of equipment, boost the collection of used equipment, maximize the reuse of electronics, and responsibly recycle the rest through third-party certified vendors.

Sprint's environmental business practices and policies make it a recycling leader and a model for the industry. Their efforts reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help manage natural resources.

TerraCycle Facebook Game App: Upcycling & Recycling

An initiative from TerraCycle incorporates recycling into a game. In 2011 TerraCycle, the company which turns trash into eco-products, launched Trash Tycoon, a Facebook game that teaches players to upcycle. Instead of planting crops or building cities as in FarmVille or CityVille, in Trash Tycoon the player cleans houses and town buildings such as a library, a school and a town hall. Players also build factories, which upcycle and recycle the collected trash and include a worm farm, glass smelter, plastic extruder, injection molder, paper recycler and greenhouse.

Players earn game money and points for the amount of waste that they upcycle into products. The products that the game produces are the same TerraCycle products on the shelves and on their website. In Canada, the upcycled Kool-Aid pencil case or the Kit Kat tote bag for instance are made from used drink pouches and Chocolate bar wrappers.

When players start making these products, they can get an idea of what it takes to make these things in real life, and how they can be made from trash that we produce every day. Today, almost 1,000,000 Canadians are collecting trash for TerraCycle diverting more than 2,000,000 waste units from landfill.

The online game helps both learn about the environment and raise money for CarbonFund.org, an environmental non-profit. 10% of all in-game currency will be donated to a CarbonFund project, and players will get to choose from three monthly projects to support with their efforts.

40 Eco-Apps that Put Technology to Work for the Environment

Technology may not be a panacea to solve the climate crisis, but green applications (eco-apps) are helping to drive awareness and foster responsible action. There was a time when eco-apps did little more than provide lists of so-called “green” products and services. Now green-themed apps have turned mobile devices into portals for environmental education and sustainable action. The smartphone market share is now estimated to be more than 40 percent in the U.S. Around the world, smartphones are proliferating and green apps are growing along with them. Eco-apps can help people be more efficient and reduce their energy consumption.

There are a wide variety of energy apps including those that monitor efficiency and consumption. Apps help with things like recycling and other aspects of green living. Mobile and tablet based smart energy applications help consumers to optimize their energy and water consumption, monitor their appliances, water heater and other electronics. These apps can also monitor and operate HVAC, grey water (from rain), automated windows (shutters and blinds) and lighting systems. They can even provide information about renewable energy conversion and variable price grid management.

Here is a list of some of the best eco-apps compiled from a variety of sources including the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Living Green Magazine, Clean Techies, Good & Green Guides, ecofriend, Solar Energy and the Globe and Mail. Most of the Apps listed below are free or cost less than one dollar.

At the end of May 2012, the Department of Energy announced the winners of its Apps for Energy competition. Apps for Energy challenged developers to build applications that help consumers get the most out of their energy usage data. These apps were created using Green Button, which is an open standard for sharing electricity data of utility customers. The goal was to help consumers to understand and reduce their energy use.

The Apps for Energy competition had a few key goals. The first was to encourage open innovation around Green Button. With Apps for Energy, they challenged developers to leverage the enormous potential of Green Button data by building web and mobile applications that help homeowners and business understand their energy usage and take action, so they can save money by saving energy. As the number of utilities around the country offering Green Button data increases, the importance of these applications will continue to grow. Equally important is the effort to create a thriving, energy-focused developer community that is committed to using technology to address real-world challenges, like reducing energy waste.

Developers submitted more than 50 web and mobile-based applications for the competition. This wide range of apps ran the gamut from a program that helps commercial builders reduce energy waste, to a fun, social game that lets you compare your energy-usage to that of your friends.

First Prize went to LEAFULLY for an app that helps utility customers visualize their Green Button data as a variety of units, such as the amount of trees needed to offset an individual’s energy usage. This app is the brainchild of Seattle-based team, Timothy Edgar and Nathan Jhaver. This app calculates a user’s energy use and then displays the impact in terms of an equivalent number of trees. Users have four main views: overview, trends, calculator and ways to save.

The Leafully app compiles historical data for energy use (electricity, natural gas and miles driven) and provides hourly breakdowns. Leafully even addresses sleeping energy, efficient appliances and peak time use. The app also lets a user see the energy they are using from their utility and the impact if they were to use only renewable energy. Users sign into the app with their Facebook account, which encourages energy reduction competition amongst friends.

Second prize went to MELON for an app that evaluates the energy performance of commercial buildings to help building owners to obtain the Energy Star benchmark. DC-based startup Melon describes itself as the first company to utilize Green Button data to simplify the process of obtaining an ENERGY STAR benchmark for commercial buildings. The app uses Green Button to evaluate the energy performance of commercial buildings.

Third prize went to VELObill, which is similar to Leafully except it focuses on the cost of energy as opposed to the environmental impact. VELObill was created by Zerofootprint and it provides consumers with an easy to understand comprehensive picture of their energy use including how much they spend on gas, water and electricity, whether their bill has gone up or down, and how they compare to peers. In addition, VELObill shows consumers how to save money, who can provide them with help, and offers tools to manage their plan of action.

The first student prize went to WOTZ for an app that was submitted by a team of students at the University of California, Irvine. This app lets users explore and play with Green Button data. The app provides several games based on the “shape” of your data, and provides creative comparisons to illustrate your usage.

The second student prize went to BUDGET IT YOURSELFfor an app that is a collaborative project from a team of students at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art. The app helps users track their energy usage and make energy-savings goals.

In the fall of 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the winners of their Apps for the Environment competition. The winner of the EPA’s “Best Overall App” was Light Bulb Finder by Adam Borut and Andrea Nylund of Eco Hatchery. Light Bulb Finder helps users switch from standard incandescent to energy-efficient light bulbs. With simple inputs about bulb and fixture types, the app recommends energy-saving bulbs with the right light quality, fit and style. Light Bulb Finder calculates financial payback and environmental impact. Energy-saving bulbs can be purchased via the app or at local stores.

The EPA’s runner up for Best Overall App was Hootroot by Matthew Kling of Brighter Planet. The Best Student App was EarthFriend by Will Fry and Ali Hasan of Fry Development Company and Differential Apps. The Best Student App runner up was Environmental Justice Participatory Mapping by Robert Sabie, Jr. of Western Washington University. The Popular Choice Award went to CG Search by Rajasekaran Bala of Cognizant Technology Solutions.

Other eco-apps include Green Genie, which is a complete guide to the sustainable lifestyle. Developed in collaboration with a LEED Accredited Professional and a professional sustainability consultant, this app offers more than just green tips, it is a massive collection of green projects and resources. Green Genie shows users how to reduce their impact and save money doing it.

Whirleo is the first game developed in conjunction with global eco-charity 1% for the Planet, it lets players control colorful, spinning tops on planet Rotopolis. As they travel, each Whirleo cleans up pollutants released by the begrimed Guzzler. Players swipe and tilt their touch-based smartphones and tablets to make tops whirl across land, sky and water. They locate hidden power-ups, discover magical crystals, solve puzzles and unlock new characters while learning about environmental issues.

Yoink is an app that reduces waste by providing a fast and easy way to find or give things away that may otherwise by thrown in the garbage. It employs an interactive map for local sourcing. There is no cost for this app and all that is required is a private message through the app to organize the pickup.

iamgreen’s Battery Saver is an app that allows users to adjust their battery settings to cut out unnecessary energy draining settings such as bright screens and unneeded Wi-Fi. It also includes an energy quiz, offers tips on saving energy and plants a tree with each purchase.

A wide range of apps are available that help people to reduce energy usage in the home. Such apps can remotely turn off appliances that use energy when they are not in use but remain plugged in. Research has shown that homeowners who are able to check how much electricity they are using in real time save an average of more than 10 percent almost immediately by turning off unnecessary lights and appliances.

The UFO Power Center is a power saving device that helps users to manage the energy use of home appliances, eliminate stand-by power, and save electricity. It provides real–time feedback which enables users to follow the energy consumption of each individual electrical device.  It can automatically turn off appliances when not in use.

Meter Readings is an app for recording readings from electricity, gas and water meters. Based on manually entered data, it displays graphs and tables of weekly and monthly costs and year-to-year comparisons, predicts your next bill and helps check bill accuracy. The app can handle multiple meters.

Control4 is a home energy app that allows users to control everything from security, lighting, and temperature to music and video for homes with the Control4 system.

SunPowerSolar Management Systemapp is an innovative Solar Electric Home Energy Management System that lets you monitor energy produced from SunPower-branded solar systems in real time. SunPower® Monitoring provides on-the-go access to the information to help save on energy expenses. Homes with the SunPowersolar system connected to SunPower Monitoring can monitor the energy produced by this solar system in real-time, wherever you are.

The Wiser Home Control app allows anyone who owns a Wiser Home Control energy management system to control everything from lighting, security, climate and even camera monitoring can be controlled from their smartphone.
 
Kill-O-Watts is an app lets users calculate energy use and predict bills. Users must input power consumption data for individual devices (this information is usually supplied with new appliances, computers, etc.) or pick typical devices from a database that comes with the app. Then specify how many hours a day each is used and utility rates. Kill-O-Watts can then tell you every device’s monthly usage and cost.

Ecobee sells smart thermostats that have an app that allows users to adjust the thermostat remotely.

Watts Plus is an app that calculates approximately how much an appliance costs to run.

iGo Vampire Power Calculator helps you calculate how much electricity you may be wasting in each room of your home.

My Water Diary is an app that helps you track your weekly water consumption by tracking what you use for drinking, cooking, washing and more, so you can reduce your use and save money.

There is also an app to help people with their recycling. An app called My Recycle List is “a grocery list for recyclers” and aims to take “the pain out of recycling by making it straight forward to find recyclers with the least amount of trips.”

There is also an entire range of apps designed to encourage more efficient driving. Eco-apps even make it easier to make informed decisions about the purchase or lease of the most energy efficient vehicles. E-Cars Pocket Guide allows users can compare different cars on important elements such as electric driving range and battery capacity. These apps can even tell you how much it costs to drive an electric vehicle compared to a car with an internal combustion engine.

An app called greenMeter can be used the same way you would use a GPS. The app’s sensors record your speed and changes in acceleration tell you if you are driving efficiently. Following this app reduces speeding, rapid acceleration and braking, which can reduce gas mileage by one-third.

The GasHog app can facilitate your car’s overall fuel efficiency by offering a plethora of calculative features that can add up to your car’s overall fuel efficiency. The features include calculations (all in international standards) of the odometer reading, amount of fuel added, and total cost to generate the fuel economy of the tank. It also displays important tips on reducing the fuel consumption of the vehicle. 

The Carticipate app is for ride sharing. All users need to do is input the data of their destination. This saves energy and makes driving more efficient. 

The Good & Green Guides are sustainable travel guides that show inhabitants and tourists how to enjoy a city while taking care of the environment. The new sustainable travel guide has over 4200 rated sustainable points of interests. This first of its kind app responds to growing consumer demand for finding credible sustainable options. The criteria for what is included in a Good & Green Guide are strict, objective and transparent. Each point of interest is thoroughly researched and reviewed by local volunteers and students, then rated using the Good & Green Star System for three categories of sustainability – Good, Green and/or Great. The guides offer points of interest including fair trade shops, organic markets, yoga studios, aid organizations, vegetarian restaurants, eco-fashion shops, natural cosmetic shops, green hotels, and more. 23 different categories are organized into five easy to navigate chapters.

The What’s Fresh app integrates a dashboard, which shows locally available fruits and vegetables. You can search for seasonal natural delicacies and expand your search by radius distance. Moreover, the app also displays a calendar with yearly availability of fruits and vegetables with their growth relation to specified locations and their cultivation attributes.

The Locavoreapp is designed for both the gourmets and the gourmands.Locavore gives you a list of seasonal produce in a chronological week by week fashion. It also shows you locally available food commodities in farmer’s markets and restaurants, along with the foods-related government and NGO data (for each state). The informative scope is enhanced by Wikipedia articles and a myriad of recipes.

The GoodGuide app allows users to select the best of eco-friendly products.This app allows you to select the best of eco-friendly products with a detailed built-in rating system. GoodGuide is the world’s largest source of information about the health, social and environmental impacts of products and companies. A team of chemists, toxicologists, nutritionists, sociologists, and environmental lifecycle analysis experts rated over 150,000 consumer products. Barcode scanning reveals how a product scores on a scale of 0-10, and suggests better alternatives.

3rdWhale app is for green shoppers. It contains over 20,000 green businesses across 30 major cities in United States and Canada. Businesses included are vetted according to stringent selection criteria involving third party certifications and accreditations.

The Green Bootis an app that helps to provide funding for public lands and nature organizations. The user starts the app while running, hiking or walking in the wilderness or even on the treadmill. The app records the steps as a pedometer. Once finished, the user submits his or her steps and chooses the program that should benefit from the donation. As Green Boot tells it, “There are no actual funds given by the user. The funds are donated from the proceeds from the ad stream that is running while the user is signed in to the program. Therefore, the more users using the app, the more possible donations there are for organizations that really need it.”
The National Parks Conservation Association app provides a complete view of park wildlife, as well as a comprehensive ecosystem review of 50 national parks.

NASA’s chemical sniffing app has the ability to detect dangerous gaseous components. Developed by NASA, this app has a chemical sensor that can be connected to an iPhone to identify and reveal very small traces of chemicals like methane, ammonia, and chlorine gas.

This is only a tiny fraction of the plethora of eco-apps that are helping to turn handheld devices into mobile green machines. Some of these eco-apps have been around for years while others are new. The next generation of eco-apps will be even more effective at putting the power of technology to work for the environment.

Game Change Rio: An Interactive Game based on System Dynamics

Game Change Rio is a great way to understand the interconnected complexities facing our planet today. Based on a huge array of real-life data, players can explore the countless ways we can ruin our world or save the planet. Once more of us begin to understand the issues involved, we have a better chance of changing the game.
Game Change Rio gives you access to real-life data that so far has only been available to experts and policy makers. Based on the Millennium Institute’s Green Economy Model, which was commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the game includes all relevant sectors of the world’s economy and the natural resources available. All of these elements are linked according to a theory called System Dynamics and effects of policies are seen in their full complexity. The model has over 5,000 indicators, and with the 125 policy cards developed, the game has over 100 million possible outcomes.

The model demonstrates that efforts to ‘green’ the world’s economy will lead to a higher rate of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. Indeed, a green economy is expected to overtake our current, business-as-usual economy (BAU) within ten years. The BAU scenario replicates historical trends and assumes no fundamental changes in policy or external conditions to alter the trends, development benefits in terms of GDP growth and poverty reduction may continue for some time.

The Green Economy Model is built on the notion that world invests 2 per cent of its GDP in ‘green’ policies. There are added external benefits to such policies: green economies are biased towards economic growth for the poor (through building up natural capital, on which the livelihood of the poor depends.)

Game Change Rio aims to raise awareness for the issues that need to be addressed if future generations are to enjoy life on this planet and goes on to propose solutions to the problems we are facing.

Solutions to the World Water Crisis

Despite the devastating water issues that plague our planet, there are solutions that can help address the water crisis.

Many organizations are leading the charge by bringing fresh water to communities in the developing world. Your donations can help support organizations that provide clean drinking water to those in need. Among these organizations is Charity: Water, which allows you to create a fundraising page to raise money to build wells in Africa. You can also directly donate through Water.org, an organization co-founded by Matt Damon. Just $25 provides clean water for a lifetime for one person.

There are also things that everyone can do in their homes and businesses. It starts with water conservation initiatives.

Here are some helpful tips for water conservation as well as tools that help individuals monitor and manage their water usage at home.

Take shorter showers and save up to 25 gallons of water a day by cutting 5 minutes off your shower time.

Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving can save about 8 gallons a day.

Use a broom rather than hose down your driveway or sidewalk.

Landscaping using climate-appropriate plants need significantly less water.

Replacing showerheads with low-flow models and putting inexpensive aerators on faucets can cut water use by up to 20 percent.

Conservation Starts at Home: The average person uses 465 liters of water per day, this link helps you determine how much water you use.

Keeping Rivers Clean: Small steps to help keep pollution out of our rivers and streams.

Business for Social Responsibility has several online research reports on water conservation, including several case studies.

Water Conservation Tips: A 10-Step Approach for Your Business was prepared by the Long Beach Water Department for commercial and industrial businesses.

WaterSense This voluntary program is offered to manufacturers, retailers, distributors, nonprofits, trade associations, utilities and landscape irrigation professionals to bring water-efficient products to market. Waterwiser Website lists providers of water conservation products and services in a searchable database.

Forty-nine tips for saving water, can be applied to the office or home.

Cleaner Water Through Conservation is a US Environmental Protection Agency document that provides an overview of water conservation and provides action steps.

"Building the Way to Water Efficiency" is a feature story that describes how facility managers, municipalities and innovative companies are working together to make water conservation easier and more effective.

Another water management resource is the Water Sustainability Tool: This tool is designed to help individual companies build a business water strategy.

Alarming Facts About Water

Due to the scarcity of clean water, we are in an ever worsening water crisis, particularly in the developing world. Although the United Nations declared access to clean water and sanitation a human right, nearly 1 billion people around the globe still risk death and disease due to a lack of potable water.

The disproportionate levels of water consumption in industrialized countries as compared to the developing world is appalling. While people in developing countries are dying due to the water crisis, those in industrialized countries over-consume.

Every day, 2 million tons of human waste are disposed of in our oceans, rivers and streams. This not only negatively impacts the environment but also harms the health of surrounding communities.

Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. According to Charity: Water, every week, nearly 38,000 children under the age of 5 die from unsafe drinking water and unhygienic living conditions.

Water is also a contributing factor for war including the conflict in Darfur which is at least in part due to the lack of access to water. A UN commissioned report found that in the 21st century, water scarcity will become one of the leading causes of conflict in Africa.

Different types of food have differing water requirements as part of their food footprint. According to The Water Project, it takes 24 liters of water to produce one hamburger. That means it would take over 184 billion gallons of water to make just one hamburger for every person in the United States.

The digital devices we use also have surprising water requirements as part of their technology footprint. According to ieee Spectrum, a cell phone requires half a liter of water to charge, with over 80 million active iPhones in the world, that's 40 million liters to charge those phones alone.

Even our clothes have a fashion footprint, Treehugger reports that a cotton t-shirt requires 1,514 liters of water to produce, and jeans require 6,813 liters.

As reported in Change.org, the US leads the world in bottled water consumption, with an average consumption of 200 bottles of water per person each year. Over 17 million barrels of oil are needed to manufacture those water bottles, 86 percent of which will never be recycled.

Today, 40% of America's rivers and 46% of America's lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life.

Water pollution also has a monetary cost, polluted coastal waters are estimated to cost the global economy $12.8 billion a year.

Blog Action Day 2010: Raising Awareness about Water



October 15th is Blog Action Day, on this day thousands of bloggers from over 130 countries come together around a common theme. This year the issue is clean water, a resource essential for life, but dangerously scarce.

Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world's bloggers around a common theme. Last year, more than 13,000 bloggers participated from 152 countries. The aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion about an important issue that impacts people around the world.

Blog Action Day 2010 is shaping up to be the biggest online day of action around water the world has ever seen.

This years subject matter is part of an effort to save some of the staggering number of people, including a disproportionate number of children who die each day from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation facilities.

Together with US Fund for UNICEF, Blog Action Day is helping to build a movement of people across the world calling on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to accelerate the UN's work to supply clean, safe drinking water to the world's poorest populations.

The Best Eco-Inventions of 2009: Energy Efficiency

The Smart Thermostat: The EnergyHub Dashboard communicates wirelessly with your furnace and your appliances and monitors energy consumption and costs. It can also turn appliances on and off and raise or lower the temperature in your house. The EnergyHub device provides detailed spreadsheets for programming energy usage, and offers features such as comparing your home’s energy usage to that of other EnergyHub users and weekly energy consumption. EnergyHub is currently partnering with utilities for trials and will be available direct to consumers in early 2010.

A More Energy Efficient Light Bulb: Philips Electronics has developed a light-emitting diode (LED) bulb said to produce as much light as a 60W incandescent bulb using less than 10W, and lasting 25 times as long. Sixty-watt lights account for 50% of the domestic incandescent market; replacing conventional light bulbs with LED. could save electricity equivalent to the energy required to power 17.4 million households.

Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) Lighting Technology: This technology from Vu1 uses accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor which creates light by making the surface of the bulb glow. ESL Technology says that this bulb creates the same light quality as an incandescent but is more energy conserving. These bulbs are mercury free.

Electricity Management with Mobile Technology: Z-Wave enabled home automation systems enables users to control thermostat, lighting etc from a mobile phone.

Blink Photocell Controlled Outlet has an adjustable eyelid that can be fine tuned to activate or deactivate the light sensing function. This gives it the energy saving advantage of automatically disabling and enabling outlets with the rising or setting of the sun. These little sensors can replace the need for bulky, complicated timers.

Making Mobile Marketing Work for Your Business: Interactive Digital Marketing For the Young and the Not So Young

New media is enabling marketers to target a wide-ranging group of highly interactive and motivated consumers. This is the first in a series of seven posts on mobile marketing. This post reviews some of the key features of the digital environment that are fueling mobile's growth.

As reported in a recent Adage article, "Interactive- and digital-marketing budgets have experienced a healthy increase. The first quarterly Epsilon CMO Survey reveals that nearly two-thirds of chief marketing officers said their interactive/digital marketing budgets have increased in the past year, while 60% have seen their traditional advertising budgets go south. The findings reflect marketers' growing need to better target their campaigns, according to Steve Cone, CMO of Epsilon. The results show that because of the economy, companies are really trying to identify the consumers that are very active in communicating with each other through social computing, blogging or podcasting. The more popular interactive and digital channels that marketers said they are keen to start experimenting with are social computing (42%), which includes word-of-mouth, social-networking sites and viral advertising; blogs (35%); podcasting (31%); and mobile devices (29%), which include phones and PDAs. The study found that some marketers have already started incorporating these tactics, with 19% of respondents already using blogs, 18% making use of podcasting and 22% using mobile devices as part of their marketing mixes. Blogging is a major activity among a relatively educated, affluent and not-as-young-as-you-would-imagine age group. And when you're talking about podcasting and mobile devices, that's a younger demographic. Marketers are trying to target the broadest age range of consumers, and that's reflected in how these break down from top to bottom. You can find hundreds of thousands of people who are really active in these areas, and they are going to be extremely receptive to offers of relevance. The study also revealed that CMOs are relying on analytics, CRM techniques and other measurable marketing strategies when determining who they want to go after."

Of all digital media, mobile is the channel that is growing most rapidly. As reported in Mobile Marketer "It’s no exaggeration to say that mobile advertising is about to revolutionize the way that marketers reach out to consumers for branding or customer acquisition or customer retention purposes. A well-targeted mobile ad campaign will strengthen bonds between brand and consumer." Mobile Web usage was up 29.4 percent from the first quarter of this year to the second. There are many reasons why Mobile marketing is destined to keep growing including the fact that mobile is a less expensive, targeted channel in an uncluttered medium.

As reported in a recent Mobile Marketer article, "A common theme voiced by mobile marketers is that to get high response rates from young consumers, they have to issue a simple, [clear]direct call-to-action that is tied to an appealing incentive and with the need to be informed that they have the ability to opt out at any time. The call-to-action must [offer] a direct incentive that is related to some type of prize or reward. The messaging of the campaign should be very straightforward and feed control to the respondent."

While the youth demographic may be the most receptive to mobile campaigns, other groups are catching on quickly. According to Dan Miller, the executive vice president of Neighborhood America. “Mobile phones are the one common device that we have with us all the time, and the youth demographic is key, but its appeal is extending across all demographics. Over time, mobile is appealing to broader and broader demographics, from older people and high-end, high net worth all the way down to blue-collar workers—the complete socio-economic spectrum...”

Digital marketing is tapping into new communication trends. In this downturn, the metrics that come with digital tactics are crucial and a significant reason why this demand is increasing. The way you approach the call to action is also important, particularly with younger audiences. However, as noted above, interactive digital's base is not exclusive to the young as it is growing accross many age demographics. In the digital marketing milieu, mobile is emerging as the hottest commodity in the expanding digital marketing universe.
