Bentley University Sustainability on Campus and in Ghana

Bentley University has made sustainability a priority, not just on campus but in the developing African nation of Ghana. Located just west of Boston, Bentley is a business university with more than 5,000 full-time students. The university has set aggressive goals to eliminate their carbon footprint by 2030. Bentley is reducing their environmental footprint through energy management, and building environmentally conscious retrofits including the installation of LED lights.

Bentley is also purchasing 25 million kWh/yr of RECs which have helped to halve the school's carbon footprint. Bentley was honored by the EPA as a Green Power Partner and earned recognition as one of the top ten Northeast-10 Conference schools in the EPA’s College & University Green Power Challenge.

Bentley's sustainability efforts have gone far beyond the college campus and  now extend all the way to Africa.  Diane M. Kellogg is an associate professor of management at Bentley University and the driving force behind the university's sustainability program in Ghana.

Diane's work in Ghana began when she took over for her friend Carol Gray. Carol was raising money to build an orphanage in the country when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “I want to die knowing the orphanage can support itself, without always needing donations." Carol said to Diane, "You’re a management consultant. You teach at a business school. Could Bentley help?” she asked.

After getting involved, Diane teamed up with Dale Kuntz, a professor of global studies and together they took 12 students to Ghana to study the role of nongovernmental organizations in economic development—and to visit the orphanage. They saw an opportunity to help by teaching them business principles with the idea that this could generate income and make them sustainable.

Soon Bentley’s mission expanded to include an education for students at a business school. Diane coined the term “Partners in Learning,” based on Paul Farmer’s “partners in health” concept described in the book Mountains Beyond Mountains. Along with Bentley's Partners, they began working on things like sanitation, water quality, the poultry industry, and solar power.

Diane then became a collaborator on other global programs and she raised funds for international travel grants and made those available to other programs. Eventually Diane involved 10 other faculty members who taught their courses in Ghana. Then they began taking professional staff to Ghana to assist. They also started a social enterprise on campus to keep students engaged with Ghana year round. They developed eight-week internships in Ghana to offer opportunities for students to get even more deeply involved.

Eventually the project grew to such an extent that Diane was able to convince Bentley to create a position to oversee the growing numbers of faculty, students, partners, and projects. This effort not only benefits the people of Ghana and Bentlely's students, it also provides staff with an opportunity to contribute in practical terms that help to make the country more sustainable.

Cornell University Installing a Solar Array with the Help of NY State

Cornell University is one of several projects that will receive funding for solar installations as part of NY-Sun initiative, launched by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The state has awarded a total of $54 million to Cornell. The state's award will be added to $120 million in private investment designated for infrastructure projects.

Cornell University will instal 6,766 solar photovoltaic panels on a 10-acre Cornell property site adjacent to the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport. This is Cornell’s first large-scale solar project and it is expected to produce about 2.5 million kWh annually, or about 1 percent of Cornell’s total electricity use.

These solar installations are part of Cornell’s Climate Action Plan which seeks to eliminate campus greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by replacing fossil-fuel energy with renewable sources.

The NY-Sun initiative will add 64 MW to the state’s solar capacity. As a function of this round of awards a total of 20 recipients will receive financing for projects at 79 large-scale solar energy sites across the state. Installations will be located at businesses, factories, municipal buildings and colleges. The projects will produce power for on-site use, but some will be able to add unused power to the grid in exchange for future utility credit. Proposals for the third round came in on August 29.

Innovative Approaches to Environmental Education: Taking School Outside

Schools are adopting increasingly innovative approaches to education that help to show children the value of the environment. Some schools are teaching children by bringing them out into nature and enabling them to do things like canoe down a river, hold a bird of prey, and rappel down a cliff wall. These types of activities are of immense value and offer far more than can be achieved in a classroom setting alone.

This is the unique pedagogical approach of WOLF (Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility) program. This novel education is the byproduct of a public-private partnership between the Springfield, Missouri public school system, Bass Pro Shops, and the Wonders of Wildlife Museum.

The WOLF program is being offered to 46 fifth-graders in the 2013 - 2014 school year. The lucky students who get to participate in this free program were chosen through a lottery system. Students not only participate in fun outdoor activities they also learn about conserving local ecosystems in the classroom, and then take what they have learned into natural splendor of the Ozark region.

WOLF goes beyond the traditional classroom setting offering students insights into a variety of ecosystems including, rivers, wetlands, forests, glades, caves, and prairies.

Results show that students in the program not only perform well academically they also develop a passion for learning. The impacts extend beyond academics and include intangibles such as improved self-confidence, teamwork, and an increased understanding of environmental issues.

This hands-on, place-based education is an ideal way to reach a generation of youth that has become increasingly disconnected from the natural world.

Harvard's New VP for Sustainable Investment Proves that Students can Change the World

Harvard has hired its first vice president for sustainable investment to help oversee the university's $30 billion endowment. Jameela Pedicini was hired in the wake of a student-led activist campaign demanding the school divest its holdings in fossil fuel companies.

As reported by Fossil Free Campaign leader 350.org, more than 300 colleges and universities are now demanding that their schools withdraw their endowment holdings from companies involved in oil, gas and coal.

The campaign has identified over 200 publicly traded companies that are tied to fossil fuels. The goal of the campaign is to encourage schools to divest from companies that are associated with oil, gas and coal.

Pedicini will have a number of responsibilities including research in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Her work at the Harvard Management Company (the firm that oversees the university's endowment) will include the provision of guidance on current industry practices and possible partnerships related to ESG investing. She will also will support Harvard University’s Corporation Committee on Shared Responsibility.

Prior to joining Harvard, Pedicini was the investment officer for global governance with the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. She also developed sustainable investment best practices as part of the management team at Calpers’ global peer exchange which oversees assets in excess of $1.5 trillion.

The hiring of Pedicini as Harvards new sustainable investment VP illustrates the power of student to change the world.

Office Depot's Back to School Cause Marketing

Office Depot's Back to School Cause Marketing

For a second year in a row Office Depot is successfully using cause marketing to increase its profile. It would appear that the efforts are paying off as sales from this year's campaign are already out-performing last year's effort. Office Depot has been a business leader through its anti-bullying effort. Last year Office depot's We Supply Kindness' campaign partnered with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation and provided a one million dollar donation. This year Office Deport continued its anti-bullying campaign and partnered with the boy band One Direction offering another million dollars for anti-bullying education in schools.

According to David Hessekiel, President of Cause Marketing Forum, here are three lessons to be learned from Office Depot:

Lesson #1: Link Core Products

Last year's effort showcased limited-edition, specially branded products such as sticky notes and Sharpies. This year's campaign goes back to basics with over 10 items that are primarily back-to-school essentials such as notebooks and page dividers (each band member has their own branded line resulting in over 50 SKUs total). According to Skolfield, product sales are "much better" than last year's cause products and more importantly, customers are increasingly adding other items to their carts when purchasing One Direction-branded products.

Lesson #2: Go Where Your Customers Live

Engaging with a socially-prolific and well-followed celebrity entity turned out to be a smart move for Office Depot in 2012. Venturing back into the social media universe where students orbit around celebrities was a must-do for Office Depot again this year. "The social media component has been enormous," Skolfield shares. According to Mashable, One Direction's combined 75 million twitter followers helped an Office Depot-promoted tweet to generate more site referrals during the campaign than the amount of referrals Office Depot saw in the entirety of 2012. Additionally, Office Depot Facebook fans have grown more than 67,000 - a 19% increase.

Lesson #3: Celebrity is to Cause as Teen is to Mom

The cause+celebrity combo works well in a back-to-school market where teens and tweens are focused on cool products and mom's paying the bill. Controlling the narrative by focusing on an empowering, positive message reinforced by authentic celebrity spokespeople is a win-win for teens and parents and aligns well with the Office Depot's desired brand positioning.

Sustainable Schools Produce Eco-literate Ambassadors

Sustainability is increasingly ubiquitous on university campuses across the country and around the world. But do students and society really benefit from an environmental education and a sustainable campus? More specifically, do environmental academics, renewable energy, recycling and other sustainability initiatives stay with students after they graduate? Do they carry their green experience into the workforce?

Sierra set out to answer this question by asking Do Green Schools Matter? They explain that it is hard to respond to this query as are only a few universities that actually track whether environmental curricula make a difference to students after graduate.

However, according to their anecdotal evidence it would appear that environmentalism on campus sticks with students well after they graduate.

As explained in their article,

"The most powerful renewable energy resource these campuses generate is freshly educated young people. And colleges crow that instilling eco-literacy--teaching youths about the state of our planet--will put us on the right path."

Green buildings are really about a culture of learning. In this video John D. Spengler reviews green innovation in sustainable campuses in Asia. In addition to mitigating carbon footprints and other environmental impacts through energy efficient technologies, campuses in Asia have started to apply various green innovations through design and methods enhancement.

Some campuses use green roofs, others use a green facade with algae to produce energy, and still others irrigate their hydroponics using HVAC's water waste to grow food. Sustainability efforts in Asian campuses now represents the culture of learning and biophilia (the love of the nature). According to Spengler next focus will be on chemicals and how they affect the environment, buildings and people's health.

John D. Spengler co-founded the Harvard Green Campus Initiative in 2000. He is also the Director of the Sustainability and Environmental Management Program for Harvard Extension School and the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard School of Public Health.

Five Ways Students are Fighting Climate Change

Young people, as they have for decades in movements around the world, are pushing and pulling the environmental movement to be bolder, and here are some stories to prove it.

1. Students Expose Climate Deniers and Lame Politicians

Activists across the country are continuing to connect the dots from corporate polluter money to politicians and the so-called “climate debate.” Scientists who are paid off by the likes of the Koch Brothers and Exxon are being called out by students like Hannah Noll in Wisconsin on their conflicts of interest in public. Politicians who think they’re just going to shake hands and kiss babies on the campaign trail are getting asked some tough questions that have global climate consequences by young activists from coast to coast.

2. Students Have the Moxie to Confront Major Corporations On Their Summer Break

Who says corporations run the show? Student activists joined Greenpeace to confront destructive tuna company StarKist at company headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the course of two weeks this summer activists talked to more than 1,000 residents, gathering photos and petition signatures from consumers who want the company to change its fishing methods. They delivered those messages to the company’s doorstep, held up signs and banners outside the office building and drove in scores of phone calls to the company from concerned members of the public. In other words, StarKist got the message and the ball’s now in their court.

3. Students Organize and Attend National Climate Conferences—Repeatedly

This isn’t your grandma’s climate conference, either. PowerShift has been held every other year since 2007, spreading to several countries, and a lot of good work has come from it. In 2009, students went directly from PowerShift to a march on the Capitol coal plant in Washington DC with thousands of others from across the country to demand clean energy. In 2007 and 2011, hundreds of students met with their members of Congress to demand climate legislation. This year’s PowerShift conference promises to see more than 15,000 young people traveling to Pittsburgh, PA, for a long October weekend of workshops, planning and action.

4. Students Push Their Campuses to Demand Clean Energy and Settle for Nothing Less

From campus divestment efforts to campaigns to shut down the nearly 40 coal plants powering (and polluting) U.S. college and university campuses—including the largest one in the country at Michigan State University—students are rising up with support from organizations including 350.org, the Sierra Club and Greenpeace. They are demanding an end to the cozy relationship between the fossil fuel industry and higher education endowments and to the on-campus plants that are spewing dirty pollution in the surrounding areas. And they won’t stop until their demands are met.

5. They Put Their Money Where Their Mouth Is

Over the last eight or more years, college campuses—over 50 to date—have established green funds to pay for sustainability projects or purchase clean energy. Most of these funds were established after successful student-led campaigns to pass referendums, several of which passed with more than two-thirds vote in favor.
