Canadian Federal Provincial Energy Conference on Resource Exploitation

In the middle of July Canada's energy ministers met in Kananaskis, Alberta to discuss creating a national energy strategy and opportunities in the mining sector. The annual conference between federal, provincial and territorial officials was held between July 16th and 19th.

Predictably, Conservative Federal Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver said it was "in the interest of all Canadians, from coast to coast, to exploit the enormous natural resources we have."

For pro-oil Conservatives, now is the time to push ahead with an environmentally hazardous resource exploitation policy. After the Conservative election victory earlier this year, many companies associated with the old energy economy are counting on a regulatory environment that expedites the exploitation of Canada's natural resources.

Prior to the meeting, Sierra Club's executive director, John Bennett, indicated that he wants to see a change in the whole focus of the meeting. Rather than trying to increase the country's oil exports, the ministers should discuss ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to the war on climate change.

Roger Gibbins, president of the Canada West Foundation, a non-profit, public policy organization which represents Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, said the diversity of energy sources in this country make a national strategy worthwhile. However, Gibbins conceded that Alberta's massive oil reserves, particularly the toxic tar sands, put Alberta in the driver's seat when it comes to energy policy.

Alberta and the Federal government share a common desire to exploit the tar sands, and many other provinces seem prepared to accept the environmental havoc it will wreak.

Chu Video: The Worst Anti-Environmental Bill of her Career

Rep. Judy Chu spoke out today in strong opposition to H.R. 2584, the Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2012. This Bill represents the greatest threat to the environment and public health in decades, and undermines jobs and economic development in growing clean energy industries at a time when Americans are struggling to overcome economic crisis. H.R. 2584 is being considered in the House of Representatives this week. Congresswoman Chu received a lifetime rating of 100% from the League of Conservation Voters for her outstanding environmental voting record.

Earl Blumenaur (D-OR) said on the House floor this afternoon, criticizing the anti-climate provisions of the FY 2012 Interior and Environmental Agencies Appropriations Act (HR 2584) now under debate. "And it's ironic. when people can barely walk outside in Washington, DC., where we're dealing with drought, flood, wildfires, extreme weather events across the country. Republican Obstructionism on the Debt Ceiling Risks Global Environmental Collapse

If Republicans do not compromise on a new debt ceiling, it will undermine the American economy which will surely undermine efforts to address climate change. If Democrats accept the Republican's plans to cut spending (including the bill known as H.R. 2584), it will significantly cut the budgets of environmentally oriented government organizations and agencies.

If a deal cannot be reached by the August 2nd deadline, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s have threatened to downgrade America's credit rating. This would undermine the credit system, raise interest rates and put pressure on an already fragile recovery.
Republican partisanship has already wreaked havoc in stock markets around the world. On Friday, July 29 the Dow Jones industrial average rose sharply after President Obama said that there is a "rough agreement" to raise the US debt, but then began falling again.

If the US defaults it will be particularly disastrous for the environment. Preoccupation with the effects of a post default America will lead to even more inaction on climate change. In such a crisis the already under-supported issue of climate change will be wiped from the national consciousness which will be far more damaging over the long-term.

In an article titled, "Climate Is a Way Bigger Deal than the Debt Ceiling," Green Alpha explains how environmental issues trump economic concerns. They indicate that the impacts of climate change are more significant then the debt ceiling debate.

Although the impact of a US default would be long lasting and cost trillions, the costs associated with inaction on climate action are even greater.

"Global warming...marries economic failure to degradation of our basic life support system. What is peaking is not merely this or that resource, but earth’s ability to absorb the pressures we’re putting on it. The economic impacts of unchecked climate change are huge enough that the combination of economic and ecological collapse may, sooner than we like to think, surpass civilization’s ability to compensate."

According to Google, failure to move aggressively to implement a clean energy economy will cost the US GDP “trillions” over just the next five years. In 2009, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) published a report authored by the co-chair of the IPCC and other climate science experts, revealing that the net present value of climate change impacts, i.e. the costs to civilization, are US$1,240 trillion under our current emission path and $410 trillion if we manage to stabilize atmospheric carbon at 450ppm. Most climate scientists would like to see that number at 350ppm or less.

In 2011, the Royal Society published a report which concludes that if we continue with business as usual, the earth will warm seven degrees Fahrenheit (4°C) by the 2060s: “In such a 4°C world, the limits for human adaptation are likely to be exceeded in many parts of the world, while the limits for adaptation for natural systems would largely be exceeded throughout the world.”

There is a growing number of scientific papers and presentations that indicate that a business as usual approach will be catastrophic. We risk such a catastrophe if we continue to burn oil and coal at ever increasing rates.

The new green economy is our best hope of reducing atmospheric carbon and strengthening our economy. While, there is widespread agreement that we have to reduce spending, Republicans want to slash spending in areas that would undermine US competitiveness in the green economy. The Tea Party movement want no part of compromise and they are passionate about resisting government investment to help grow the green economy.

Tragically, fathoming a collapse is too much for people. Many deny the existence of anthropogenic climate change rather than face the facts and make the required changes.

The debt ceiling and climate change are intimately intertwined. The most expedient way we can effectively address the problem of climate change is by helping to grow the green economy. Investing in a low carbon economy is the best way to increase govenment revenues and avert a debt crisis.

History will judge harshly Republicans who put partisan interests ahead of the interests of the nation and the earth itself. They are not just playing politics they are jeopardizing the future of the planet and its inhabitants.

If Republican obstructionism causes America to default, they risk damning civilization to the hell of global warming.

EDF Campaign Opposing US Anti-Environment Bill

An EDF campaign is working to kill the Republican's anti-environment crusade. Under a bill known as H.R. 2584 Republicans are seeking to drastically cut funding to the EPA and other environment oriented government organizations and agencies.

The EDF campaign asks Americans to "Help Stop Mother of All Anti-Environmental Bills!" In an open plea to America, the EDF says:

If you care about the water you drink, the air you breathe, and America's natural heritage, we need you to stand with us right now against the mother of all anti-environmental bills.

The U.S. House is poised to vote this week on the must-pass House Interior Appropriations Bill, which contains more than 40 amendments and "policy riders."

Taken together, these provisions represent the single worst attack on public health and the environment in American history.

Please take action right now to urge your members of Congress opposing this monstrous bill, and to oppose all anti-environment amendments.

Some of the most outrageous provisions that have already been added include:

-- An amendment that would block EPA from regulating deadly pollution like mercury, smog, and soot from power plants and cement plants. The pollution that these facilities would then be allowed to spew could cause up to 27,800 premature deaths.

-- A provision opening up lands immediately next to the Grand Canyon to uranium mining, despoiling one of the most iconic landscapes in the United States, and potentially contaminating its waters with radioactivity.

-- An amendment stripping Clean Water Act protections for the drinking water sources of 117 million Americans.

-- A provision driving endangered plants and animals to extinction, by preventing federal agencies from listing any species as endangered or protecting their critical habitats.

These four provisions alone would represent a historic assault on our environmental heritage and human health protections. There are dozens of others just like them in this, the mother of all anti-environment bills.

A vote could come any day.

Please send a message to your Representatives and Senators asking them to stand against this deadly assault on our public health and environmental standards by voting no on this version of the Interior Appropriations bill.

Tell your Representative to Vote Against This Bill.

Republican Assault on the Environment

Under the cover of America's preoccupation with the debt ceiling the Republicans are launching an all out offensive against the Environment. This is the latest attempt by Republicans to slash funding to the EPA and undermine environmental regulations. Cutting funding on environmental issues like air quality and pesticides will prove harmful to Americans and their environment. It will also eliminate jobs and undermine the economy.

"This is the most anti-environmental House in history," House Energy and Commerce Committee ranking member Henry Waxman told the House. "The new Republican majority seems intent on restoring the robber-baron era where there were no controls on pollution from power plants and oil refineries and factories."

Republicans want to emasculate the EPA by slashing 18 percent of its budget amounting to $8.65bn this year and $7.15bn next year. The bill proposes a budget cut of around seven percent for many other environmentally oriented departments and agencies.

On Monday July 25, the US House of Representatives started work on H.R. 2584, the 2012 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This Environment and Related Agencies appropriations bill funds many of America's signature environmental laws. This is the first of 12 bills that fund the US federal government, all of which must be passed by the first of October.

On Tuesday July 26, the House continued work on the Interior Department spending bill. On Wednesday and Thursday July 27 and 28, the House is expected to work on H.R. 1938, which would require the government to decide by November 1 on a proposed oil pipeline from Canada.

Minority whip Steny H. Hoyer, accused the GOP of ignoring the will of their constituents. "I got no message from any voter that I ought to come to Congress and undermine the air, water and land that they survive on, recreate on and rely on for the quality of their lives," he said. "Not one constituent, whether they voted for me or against me, said 'undermine the protections of our land and water and air'. Not one."

In a recent sustainable business article, H.R. 2584 was referred to as the "Mother of All Anti-Environment Bills." According to the Environmental Defense Action Fund, HR 2584 is the Mother of All Anti-Environmental Bills, because it contains nearly 40 anti-environmental policy riders.

"Instead of moving stand-alone legislation or openly debating the merits of gutting America's environmental protections, the House is trying to sneak more than 40 anti-environment amendments and policy riders to the Interior Appropriations bill," says Environmental Defense. "And that's even before it comes to the floor, where many members of Congress have already announced plans to amend the bill and make it even worse."

Here are some examples:
  • Prohibit the federal government and states from increasing vehicle fuel efficiency to reduce U.S. oil dependence, prevent climate change, and lower fuel costs
  • Block EPA from regulating water pollution, affecting the drinking water of 117 million people
  • Prevent the EPA from regulating air pollution: mercury, smog, soot and other pollutants from power and cement plants, allowing our dirtiest plants to emit unlimited pollution.
  • Cease protection for endangered species. No new species could be listed as endangered and no federal agencies would be prohibited from protecting critical habitats.
  • Open up lands immediately next to the Grand Canyon to uranium mining, despoiling one of our most iconic landscapes and potentially contaminating its waters with radioactivity.
The House of Representatives Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition (SEEC) blasted the Republican agenda, for attempting to use a federal funding bill to overturn our country's most important environmental laws.

SEEC leaders - co-chairs Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Steve Israel (D-NY), and vice chairs Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ), Paul Tonko (D-NY), Jared Polis (D-CO), Gerry Connolly (D-VA), and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) - released the following joint statement on behalf of the 48-member coalition:

Both parties and houses of Congress should be focused on preventing a default crisis, and on creating jobs in a competitive 21st century economy. But instead, this week the House will consider H.R. 2584 - an unprecedented back-door attempt to roll back essential pollution controls and public health protections in favor of bigger profits for the country's worst polluters. This is a low mark for the 112th Congress that has already seen the GOP majority preserve giveaways to Big Oil and advance legislation to overturn common sense energy efficiency standards, slash clean energy innovation, and carve loopholes in important environmental statutes.

"H.R. 2584 would overturn 40 years of bipartisan progress protecting the clean air and water on which all Americans depend, and the lands and wildlife that Americans treasure. The American people reject the false choice between a prosperous economy and a sustainable environment, which we've proven can go hand in hand. SEEC calls on the Congress to reject this bill."

In addition to impoverishing America's environment, Republicans are also directly cutting jobs and adding to the country's unemployment rolls. For example, the proposed bill would eliminate the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, which provides funding for migratory birds. The Outdoor Industry Foundation estimates that bird watching and other wildlife viewing contributes $43 billion a year to the US economy. An estimated 66 million Americans participate in wildlife viewing, which supports nearly half a million jobs and generates $2.7 billion annually state and federal tax receipts.

"This environmental spending bill is one of the worst assaults on birds and other wildlife ever to come before Congress," says Darin Schroeder of the American Bird Conservancy, the leading bird conservation organization in the US.

"These aggressive provisions are an unprecedented and blatant attempt to undermine bedrock environmental laws that Americans have depended on for nearly 40 years to protect their health, air, water and public lands. They also undermine the development and deployment of energy efficiency and clean energy technologies and forbid various agencies from proceeding with current work related to climate change," says Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a national group of about 850 business leaders who promote strong environmental policy to grow the economy.

Here's an excerpt from a letter Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) sent to the House:

"Strong federal resource management, protection and performance standards are fundamental to the success of American businesses and a thriving economy, and the clean energy technology sector offers the single most promising platform for reviving our struggling manufacturing base, creating new jobs and providing a robust opportunity for export expansion. However, the U.S. is swiftly losing our competitive advantage with countries such as China and Germany which are embracing the opportunities provided by improved energy efficiency and fast growing clean energy industries. Though we should rightfully be leading in this trillion dollar global market since many of these technologies were developed here with U.S. research dollars, this bill ensures that we will fall further behind."

H.R. 2584 proposes deep cuts to funding for federal agencies that protect America's air, water, lands, and wildlife, and contains 40 policy riders that would undermine the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

Resistance to Cuts at Environment Canada

On July 5, nearly 50 civil society organizations sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper decrying the cuts to Environment Canada and outlining serious concerns about the impacts of the cuts.

As reported in rabble.ca, the letter was endorsed by labour, environmental, social justice, women's and First Nations organizations, including the Council of Canadians, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, International Institute of Concern for Public Health, Keepers of the Athabasca Watershed Council, Métis Women's Circle, Mining Watch Canada, National Council of Women of Canada, National Network on Environments and Women's Health, Polaris Institute, Public Service Alliance of Canada, and Sierra Club Canada.
In the letter, statements were made by Maude Barlow (national chairperson of the Council of Canadians), Oliver M. Brandes (co-director of the University of Victoria's POLIS Project on Ecological Governance), David Suzuki (emeritus professor of zoology, University of British Columbia), Bob Sandford (chair of the Canadian Partnership Initiative in support of the United Nations Water for Life Decade), Ralph Pentland (acting chairman of the Canadian Water Issues Council) and Randy Christensen (lawyer with Ecojustice).

The largest amount of job cuts was in Climate Change and Clean Air. The number of full time equivalents (FTEs) were reduced by nearly half, a reduction of 422 FTEs for 2011-2012 with another 100 FTEs slated for elimination in 2012-2013. The goal of the program is to ensure that "threats to Canadians, their health and their environment from air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions are minimized." The programming is "critical to protect the health of Canadians and the environment from the harmful effects of air pollutants and the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions." The program activity is responsible for regulating air pollutants and controlling greenhouse gas emissions.

Budget cuts are reducing services and this has dire implications for the issue of water. Conservation, protection and enforcement of Canada's water will suffer due to the Conservative budget. Conservatives are slashing budgets at a time when Canada needs a national water strategy to replace the badly outdated Federal Water Policy which is more than 30 years old.

According to Environment Canada's 2011-2012 Report on Plans and Priorities, 34 Full-time Equivalents (FTEs) will be cut from the program activity of Water Resources this year (2011-2012) and another 20 FTE positions will be eliminated next year (2012-2013). The program addresses the impacts that economic growth, climate change and other factors have on water sources. The program focuses on water sustainability and provides scientific information and advice to decision-makers. This area also supports the implementation of the Canada Water Act, the 1987 Federal Water Policy, Canadian Environmental Protect Act, Fisheries Act and International Boundary Waters Treaty Act.

Substance and waste management is another area of concern. A total of 279 FTEs will be reduced from Substance and Waste Management. The goal of the program is ensure that "threats to Canadians and impacts on the environment posed by harmful substances and waste are reduced." The program activity "assesses environmental threats posed by harmful substances and other substances of concern in terms of their fate and effects, and develops and implements prevention, reduction, elimination and management measures to deal with these substances." This area is linked to water quality and ecosystem/habitat conservation and protection.

A significant number of FTEs were eliminated from Weather and Environmental Services: 146 FTEs were cut from Weather and Environmental Services for Canadians and 56 FTEs were cut from Weather and Environmental Services for Targeted Users. These significant cuts were not noted in last year's Plans and Priorities.

The mission of the program activity Weather and Environmental Services for Canadians includes ensuring "Canadians, communities and policy-makers understand the potential health and safety risks from the changing climate and air quality conditions." Programming also manages short- and long-term risks including air quality or climate change.

The letter concludes by saying, "Overall these cuts present a significant threat to water protection and healthy ecosystems in Canada. We are calling on the federal government to cancel the cuts and invest in our country's freshwater heritage."

Conservatives Cut Budgets and Slash Jobs at Environment Canada

In addition to cuts at the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the NRC the Conservatives are also taking the axe to Environment Canada. Over $200 million is being cut from Environment Canada's budget which is resulting in the loss of services and jobs. Amongst the people being let go are those involved in climate change research and those responsible for contaminated sites. These cuts will result in the elimination of 1211 jobs (full-time equivalents) over the next three years. The 50 employees cut in June, include people working in the areas of water and atmospheric science.

Environment Canada is the leading organization related to the country's environmental agenda. They are charged with  a number of responsibilities including environmental protection and natural heritage conservation. They also provide meteorological information and science that informs the nation's regulations and legislation.

Environment Canada collaborates on initiatives that are intended to protect the health of Canadians and the well being of the planet. They work to collect and share knowledge, and to develop, implement and enforce policies to prevent future environmental issues.

Environment Canada's Reports on Plans and Priorities from 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 reveals some deep cuts amounting to a reduction of more than $222 million from last year's total planned spending.

Some of the biggest cuts were in the program activities of climate change, clean air, substance and waste management, weather, environmental services and water resource protections. The programs that were cut this year include, the Clean Air Agenda and the Air Quality Health Index. The programs that will be cut next year include Species at Risk. Over the next few years cuts are expected to Biodiversity and the Chemicals Management Plan.

The Chemicals Management Program is managed jointly between Environment Canada and Health Canada. It ensures "timely action on key threats to health and the environment" and is responsible for "risk assessment, risk management, monitoring and surveillance, as well as research on chemicals which may be harmful to human health or the environment." The Chemicals Management Plan was intended to proactively reduce future costs associated with water treatment, clean-up of contaminated sites, and treating illnesses like cancer that are related to chemical exposure.

Funding was also reduced for the Action Plan on Clean Water and the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan. Last March, former Environment Minister Jim Prentice said the Action Plan on Clean Water was a priority. However, the government is going back on its word to provide clean water, just as it reneged on its commitment to improve environmental assessment.

Cuts to the Action Plan on Clean Water includes facets of the Oceans Action Plan, the Plan of Action for Drinking Water in First Nations Communities, clean-up funding for water bodies, wastewater regulations and water science. These cuts undermine Canada's ability to fulfill their legal obligation on the right to water.

Without consulting the public the federal government has cut programs that will have critical impacts on current as well as future generations.

With cuts to Environment Canada, the NRC, and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, it is clear that Harper's Conservatives want to emasculate all the instruments of power that could undermine their bid to disregard the environment and make Canada a dirty energy superpower.

Canadian Conservatives Slash Environmental Assessment

Recently, in the speech from the throne, the Canadian Conservative government affirmed its commitment to improving environmental assessment, now it is gutting those institutions responsible for environmental oversight.

The Conservative government of Canada is cutting jobs and funding to the environmental agency that evaluates policies and projects. These cutbacks ensure that Canadians will have less information about proposed resource projects.

Conservatives are getting rid of a third of the full-time staff at the 17-year-old Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. The Agency provides Canadians with high-quality environmental assessments that contributes to informed decision making, in support of sustainable development. They play a leadership role in the review of major projects assessed as comprehensive studies and those referred to review panels. They also coordinate the Government of Canada's Aboriginal consultation activities during the environmental assessment process.

As reported in a Canada.com article, by Amy Minsky, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is looking at a cutback of almost half of their budget. According to the agency's planning documents, 43.1 percent of their budget has been cut, resulting in budgetary reductions of $13 million dollars ($30 million in 2011-12 reduced to $17.1 million in 2012-13). This is in addition to cuts In 2010-2011, when the agency had its budget cut by 6.9 per cent, or $2.2-million.

With an increasing number of large-scale mining projects coming down the pipe — including Stornoway Diamond Corp.'s foray into Quebec's first diamond mine, Taseko Mines Ltd.'s gold-copper mine in British Columbia, and the Enbridge oil pipeline — now is not the time to start taking risks, said Stephen Hazell, an environmental lawyer based in Ottawa.

Hazell indicated that the proper environmental assessments could have averted the three month long BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. "BP didn't get it sorted out, and the engineers at Fukushima didn't get it figured out. Sometimes it happens. Bad things happen," he said.

One of the programs that were cut specifically aims to improve the regulatory framework for major projects.

Hazell indicated that the Conservatives have been slowly withdrawing from the assessment act which already contained loopholes. "Perhaps these cuts they're planning are just another way of reducing federal environmental assessment and getting government off the backs of industry," Hazell said.

Cuts to the Environmental Assessment Agency, Environment Canada and the NRC paint a clear picture. With its ever expanding anti-environment agenda, it is no wonder that the federal Conservatives want to weaken government organizations with opposing views.

Canadian Conservatives Slash NRC Budget

The Canadian Conservatives have cut almost $200 million from the budget of the National Research Council of Canada. The Harper governments cuts eliminate more than 20 percent of the NRC's budget.

The National Research Council promotes leading-edge technological research and is the Government of Canada's premier organization for research and development. For almost 100 years the NRC has been contributing to more informed decision making. This year, the NRC named sustainable energy as one of its three national priority areas.
As reported in the Ottawa Citiz
en, The NRC's total budget was $881,137,581 in the last fiscal year; in 2011-12, it has been reduced to $690,836,000. These cuts will result in the elimination of 25 science jobs across the country.

"The loss of institutional knowledge will be huge," said Gary Corbett, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPPS), the scientists' union. "You can't just drain knowledge from the public sector. It will be devastating to Canada in future years, but the government doesn't seem to care."

Although the numbers of people cut is devastating, the loss of expertise is debilitating. "If you have a rocket scientist going out the door, you can't replace that person with an insect scientist," Corbett said.

While some departments are being gutted other are getting budget increases. Corrections Canada is getting an increase even though crime is at a 40 year low. Government departments associated with the environments are being singled out for cuts. With a combined total of almost half a billion dollars being cut at the NRC, Environment Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, it is clear that this is not just about across the board cost cutting.

Why are the federal Conservatives cutting spending in departments associated with the environment? Perhaps it is because these cuts serve to weaken the institutions that may contradict a Conservative energy agenda that is mired in the tar sands.

Even the Axis of Evil is Investing in Renewables

Every nation on earth is exploring green energy alternatives even pariah states. To prove the point, even North Korea and Iran, members of what former President Bush called the Axis of Evil are Developing Renewable Energy.

North Korea wants to increase their production of renewable energy. China has agreed to collaborate with North Korea in the sector of renewable energy. North Korean officials recently visited China to learn from China’s experience in the geothermal sector.
Although they steadily increased in the 90s, North Korea's combustible renewables and waste sectors have become stagnant. The country is rich in hydro power resources which constitutes approximately half of the nation's total generation capacity.

An increase in renewable energy would decrease North Korea's dependence on oil imports from Russia, China and Iran.

Opec member Iran plans to develop new renewable energy power plants over the next five years to produce 2,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity. Iran's deputy minister for electricity, Abbas Aliabadi said Iran already has 8500 MW hydro power plants in operation and has installed 130 MW of wind turbines.

"The government of Iran has paved the way for private sector participation in developing renewable energy systems," he said. The private sector has already signed contracts to install wind turbines as well as biomass systems with capacity of 600 MW and the ministry of energy is implementing 500 MW wind converters in the country.

"Iran, though an oil exporting country, is determined to be an important partner in global efforts of human societies to achieve sustainable energy systems," he told a preparatory meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) where even Israel was participating.

If even rogue nations are integrating renewable energy projects into their national energy policies, it is harder to justify Canada's increased exploitation of the tar sands.

US Protests Against the Keystone XL Tar Sands Oil Pipeline

Canada wants to build a pipeline to transport tar sands oil from the province of Alberta all the way down to refineries in Texas. Earth friendly groups see the 1,700-mile long pipeline, known as the Keystone XL, as a disaster for the environment. According to Dr. Hansen who is one of America’s top climate scientists, the full exploitation of Canada’s tar sands would constitute a “game over” scenario for efforts to solve climate change.

Now that it has Canadian approval, the fate of the Keystone XL Pipeline is in the hands of President Obama. The President will decide on the fate of the pipeline as early as September. This decision will have dire implications for renewable energy production. The more access the US has to tar sands oil, the less it will turn to renewable sources of energy.

The pipeline negatively impacts wind power projects scheduled for Maryland, Virginia and DC and many other states that are developing their own renewable energy resources. In Maryland and Virginia alone there is enough offshore wind energy to power millions of electric cars indefinitely and without pollution.

From August 15th to September 5th, thousands of Americans – including Bill McKibben, Danny Glover, and NASA’s Dr. James Hansen – will be protesting at the White House, demanding that Obama reject the tar sands. To be part of this historic protest click here.
