US Wants Government Action on the Environment but Less Fond of the Environmental Movement

Polls suggest that Americans want to see their government act on environmental issues, but they do not have much love for the environmental movement. According to a number of different surveys, people in the US have seemingly contradictory views on the environment. American public opinion may be divided but there are some issues that enjoy the support of the majority.

Most Americans want to see government support for clean energy and they want government to make climate change a priority issue. The majority of Americans see global warming as an important issue, and regularly engage in behaviors that are good for the environment.

Gallup recently found that 83 percent of Americans want more government support for clean energy. Yale and George Mason University researchers found [PDF] that 72 percent of Americans believe that global warming should be a government priority. Another Gallup poll found that three out of four Americans regularly engage in environmentally friendly behaviors.

Polls on American attitudes suggest that support for the environmental movement has declined over the last ten years.According to a 2010 Gallup poll, American support the environmental movement has decreased and unsurprisingly it is split along party lines. Republicans tend to dislike environmentalists while Democrats tend to be supporters.

The 2010 survey asked respondents whether they think the environmental movement has done more good than harm, or vice versa, and a similar but slightly stronger pattern emerges. In 2010, 22 percent said that the movement has "definitely done more good than harm" and 40% that it has "probably done more good than harm," for a total of 62% holding a positive view. This reflects a decline of 13 points since 2000.

Conservative Budget Guts the Environment

Prime Minister Steven Harper's ruling Conservative government is using their majority to all but eliminate Canada's environmental protections. On March 29, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty released a federal budget which guts environmental legislation. It is tragically ironic that this anti-environment budget comes only one week after record-breaking temperatures in the National Capital Region.

Under the new budget Environment Canada will be cut by $88 million. Parks Canada will be cut by $6 million this year and rise to $29 million in 2014/15. Environmental reviews for major oil, gas and mining projects will be shortened and some of these reviews will be handed entirely to the provinces.

Activists are upset about pension reform, job losses, social spending cuts and of course the enviroment. Canadians have protested from the House of Commons gallery chanting, "This is not our budget! Where are we in your budget?" before being detained and later released by Hill Security.

Canadians opposed to the Harper government's austerity measures are rallying around the slogan Not Our Budget, and issued a press release coinciding with the action on Parliament Hill. The two paramount issues for this group is the "gutting of environmental legislation" and cutting "services for First Nations education and health."

Despite the opposition from aboriginal people, the federal budget tries to sell projects like the environmentally destructive Northern Gateway pipeline as being benefitial to First Nations. The truth is that accelerated environmental assessment related to oil and gas and uranium is part of the problem not the solution.

This Conservative government has a deplorable environmental record, in fact it is one of the worst developed countries in the world. In addition to undermining UN climate negotiations, Harper's Conservatives have defended big oil's interests at every turn and they have lobbied the US and EU on behalf of the tar sands.

Steven Guilbeault of Équiterre said the budget, "seems to have been written for, and even by, big oil interests, the Harper government is gutting the environmental protections that Canadians have depended on for decades to safeguard our families and nature from pollution, toxic contamination and other environmental problems."

While President Barack Obama is working to end oil subsidies in the US, Prime Minister Harper is searching out new markets for the tar sands and other Canadian resources. It is no coincidence that Harper is pitching lowered domestic environmental standards to markets that share Canada's lax environmental review policies.

Foster Friess is the Climate Denying Money Man Behind Rick Santorum

Foster S. Friess is the climate denying money-man behind Rick Santorum's bid for the GOP presidential nomination. The Republican hopefuls are following the money, Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is betting on Newt Gingrich and Friess is bankrolling the pro-Santorum super PAC. Friess is a Wyoming cowboy who is known for his opposition to the science of climate change.

Articles on his website deride the science behind climate change by attempting to resurrect "climate-gate" (even though the science was deemed sound and the scientist in question was cleared by a UK parliamentary committee).

Articles on Friess' site with titles like, "It’s Hard to Believe in Global Warming When Climate is Getting Cooler," flagrantly contradict the facts. Recent evidence corroborates the observation that the earth is getting warmer and this is precipitating extreme weather events.

When Friess is not assaulting the science of climate change he is trying to impugn climate scientists. An article on his site brazenly calls global warming the “greatest scam in history” and questions the age and experience of the scientists working for the UN. Another article's headline reads, “Humans Are Not Main Cause of Global Warming.”

Throughout his site the articles he posts use the language of climate change denial. They use deliberately misleading phrases like "global warming alarmists" and "climate change propaganda." Rather than acknowledge that he shares the Republican's anti-scientific bias, Friess tries to frame the issues in terms of free speech and the right to dissent.

Other articles on his site include "Global Warming; A Religion in Decline." In this article he makes wildly inaccurate statements like, "Green technologies have all proved expensive, environmentally hazardous and wildly unpopular duds.”

As a successful investor it is hard to see how Friess could make such outlandish claims. There is a wealth of data supporting the powerful and sustained growth of cleantech. Investing Daily has even gone so far as to describe CleanTech as "the greatest investment opportunity ever."

Cisco Systems vice president Marie Hattar has said that cleantech will not only be the biggest innovation ever, it will be 10 to 100 times bigger than the Internet.

As we get ever closer to the catastrophic impacts of climate change it is unconscionable that those who should know better continue to use their wealth and power to promote denialism at the highest level.

Friess describes himself as the “man atop the horse." Given the implications of runaway climate change, he may best be described as one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
