Event - Power Shift 2013: Youth Conference Convenes to Fight Climate Change

Power Shift 2013 will take place October 18 - 21st in Pittsburgh, PA. There are expected to be 10,000+ youth leaders converging on Pittsburgh to combat climate change and fight for the future. Young people will come together from all walks of life including college students, young environmental justice leaders, DREAMers, young people of faith, and young workers. At this conference attendees will learn from one another and go back to their communities where they will build and launch strategic campaigns.

Issues on the agenda include the fight against fracking, and the Keystone XL pipeline. They will also address the issues of divestment from fossil fuels, clean energy, and of course, the climate crisis.

People are assembling with the aim of creating a just and thriving economy. They will do this by standing up on campuses across the country and around the world.

This is the most diverse generation in history, and they are united in their demand of justice for all with one voice. This is a generation is not afraid to speak truth to power, to sacrifice and to demonstrate their commitment to changes that seemed impossible to previous generations.

These young people are also tackling the complex and pernicious issue of corporate interests who pollute our climate and who hijack democracy with billions of dollars in campaign contributions, ads, and outright bribes.

They will not be silenced and for those politicians who stand in their way, beware as they will come together to exercise their right to vote. Just as they played a significant role in electing President Obama in 2008 and 2012, they will vote again for justice and against intransigence and climate denial.

Power Shift is a call for action that will shift priorities at every level of society, from local communities to the national government.

Power Shift 2013 is only the beginning of their plans to improve the world. After the conference they will return to their communities where they will launch hundreds of sustained campaigns and mass actions to demand climate justice.

Together, their voices will unite in a drumbeat calling for change that will not be ignored.

Together under a grand vision for justice they are determined to build a stronger and more vibrant climate movement.

Event - 2013 Annual National Environmental, Energy And Resources Law Summit

The 2013 Annual National Environmental, Energy And Resources Law Summit will take place on Thursday Jun 20 to Fri Jun 21, in Yellowknife, NT. at The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. This summit is set against the backdrop of Canada’s arctic region. This engaging program is designed to provide private practitioners, in-house corporate and government counsel, regulators, and other professionals with an annual update on the hottest issues in the environmental, energy and resources law field.

Canada’s economy increasingly revolves around projects devoted to the extraction of its natural resources and the production of energy. As resource extraction projects gain attention, so too does the role of lawyers in the field. More and more, lawyers are advising clients and appearing before courts and tribunals on matters such as the environmental assessment of mining projects, the development of renewable energy generation projects, and the intersecting Aboriginal consultation process and accommodation issues.

This program will feature leading experts and practitioners discussing legal regimes and challenges associated with resource extraction projects such as mining and oil and gas extraction, spanning both north and south of 60. Substantive topics will address off-shore resource development, natural gas extraction, environmental assessment issues, renewable energy, streamlining regulatory processes, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility. Participants will gain a better understanding of how this burgeoning area is unfolding on the international, national, and local levels. This is a premier program with an added northern lens – not to be missed given the natural resource development opportunities north of 60.

Summit attendees are welcome to attend the NEERLS full-day business meeting on June 22. This is a terrific opportunity to get to know the NEERLS executive, to learn more about section activities, and to get involved!

Guides - Sustainable Events

The Sustainable Event Guide (SEG) was developed to help you find the resources and services to make your events as sustainable as possible. It is a document filled with guidance, resources, and simple advice about organizing an event that benefits the community, promotes ethical purchasing, and reduces waste. For some, this guide may simply act as an information resource about environmentally and socially responsible retailers and/or as a guide in reducing the waste produced at an event. For those who have never organized a big event, this guide may act as a framework for the "how to" of organizing. Regardless of past experience in event organizing, we suggest browsing through the entire guide - it may inspire new ideas or stir up old ones.

We believe everyone can make a difference through the way they host academic, social, and fundraising events. Although this guide includes many Concordia University specific resources, there is plenty of information that event planners from other universities and organizations may find very useful as well.

Event - Global Conference on Sustainability and Reporting

On May 22-24, 2013, in Amsterdam, Join over 1500 leaders and practitioners from business, finance, accountancy, consultancy, civil society, government, labor and academia in discussing the key challenges and opportunities on the path to a more sustainable future. Billed as the sustainability leadership event of 2013, this conference is focused on the themes of integration and innovation.

Integration

The successful company of tomorrow will have an integrated strategy to achieve financial results and create lasting value for itself, its stakeholders and society.

Integrated thinking will enable companies to factor sustainability into their operations, business models, and measures of success. Integrated reporting aims to bridge the gap between financial and non-financial performance. And collaboration between organizations and stakeholders, across sectors and regions, will mean that shared values and best practices can accelerate change towards a sustainable global economy.

By integrating the learning from the Conference, participants will also be inspired to act and interact: leading to a new call for action, and supporting a new mandate for GRI.

Innovation

Achieving a sustainable global economy is an innovation challenge. Organizations and companies worldwide need to be innovative in the way they are managed and do business. Stakeholder engagement, organizational responsibilities, value creation, community engagement: in these and other areas, many leaders are already showing the way.

Conference participants will be invited to explore today’s key sustainability challenges, offer solutions, and co-design the future.

Innovation also underpins the continuous improvement of GRI’s Sustainability Reporting Framework. The Conference will see the launch of the new G4 Guidelines, providing organizations and companies with a new resource for measuring sustainability, improving transparency, and defining responsibility.

Growth and prosperity depend on our ability to meet today’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Climate change, resource scarcity, financial corruption, human rights abuses: these interlinked challenges need joined-up, collaborative solutions.

Leading organizations are showing the way with greater transparency and more responsible practices. Sustainability reporting adds value: Around the world, thousands of organizations now report their economic, environmental, social and governance performance.

More than ever, we need a robust reporting framework that enables companies to account for their impacts; communicate how they will create value; and give investors, governments and consumers the information they need to make better decisions.

With a theme of Information – Integration – Innovation, the 2013 Global Conference on Sustainability and Reporting will unite over 1500 delegates from business, finance, accountancy, consultancy, civil society, government, labor and academia. These sustainability leaders will connect, share knowledge, and collaborate – to accelerate the transition to a sustainable global economy.

Climate Change Highlighted at the WEF in Davos (2013)

As we emerge from a global recession, climate change is once again on the global agenda. During the week of January 21 -25, many of those present for the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos Switzerland, acknowledged that climate change has very significant economic ramifications. Both President Barack Obama and UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon highlighted climate change as a top priority in Davos.

"There was mostly silence on climate change for the last two years at Davos," said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense "But that has changed. The US drought, especially, has grabbed people's attention here in Davos because that has had a real effect on prices."

"The US has to be among the leaders in this global discussion, so it is a positive development," Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemical, said of Obama's inauguration speech, in which he made climate change a priority for his second term.

At the Davos summit, UN chief Ban Ki-moon indicated that he was also encouraged by Mr Obama's speech, while warning that climate change was approaching "much, much faster than one would expect".

Former Mexican president Felipe Calderon warned of "a climate crisis with potentially devastating impacts on the global economy".

Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, made the point by saying: "Unless we take action on climate change, future generations will be roasted, toasted, fried and grilled."

However, the scope of the response from politicians and businesses is nowhere near what it needs to be if we are to stave off the worst impacts of climate change. The United Nations sponsored climate talks have agreed on a mandate to draw up a climate change plan by 2015 but it will only come into force in 2020.

While renewable energy continues to grow, the rapid growth in shale gas has hampered the growth of renewables. According to a WEF study, the world will need to invest $700 billion each year to curb fossil fuel use. The International Energy Agency warned that current trends indicate the world will burn around 1.2 billion more tonnes of coal per year by 2017 than it does today

Although more businesses are getting involved with sustainability, they require a clear regulatory framework from governments if they are to effectively plan for the future. As yet, this regulatory framework is not forthcoming.

And an analysis by Ecofys for Greenpeace, presented at Davos, found that just 14 carbon-intensive projects worldwide are set to increase global CO2 emissions by 20 per cent, or 6 gigatonnes. They range from coal expansion in Asia to the tar sands of Canada.

Addressing a packed plenary, Lagarde made the case for tackling the environment. Climate change she said, is “The biggest economic challenge of the 21st century… Make no mistake: without concerted action, the very future of our planet is in peril.”

Despite the slow pace of progress, it is heartening that world leaders are once again talking about the importance of acting to protect our environment from human activity.

Event - Inspiring Engagement: Enabling Habits That Drive Sustainable Change

Inspiring Engagement - Enabling Habits That Drive Sustainable Change will take place at Network Orange, ING DIRECT Downtown Café 221 Yonge Street (Yonge & Shuter), Toronto, ON, Canada. This event is being held by SPRING and will feature Christine Wickett, Senior TEEM Program Manager, Energy Advantage.

You’ve installed energy efficient lights, lighting sensors, completed an HVAC retrofit, reduced paper use in your offices and set up a recycling program. Next, you’ve detailed corporate wide sustainability goals and have implemented operational procedures to meet these targets. So what’s next?

Upon meeting with initial success investing in facilities and operational efficiencies, many organizations look to advance their sustainability initiatives by engaging stakeholders and identify addition cost-saving opportunities by engaging their stakeholder – be they employees, customers, partners, etc.

Stakeholder engagement is an integral piece to capturing the highest business value from sustainability. For example, a building’s performance is not solely based on the its design, systems or equipment, but on how stakeholders operate and occupy the building.

Christine Wickett will present a variety of best practices for engaging stakeholders in sustainability, and will present different behavioural change management strategies that can take your sustainability program to the next level. Participants will then be encouraged to share their insight and experience during the subsequent peer-to-peer dialogue.
