Solar Innovation in Energy Generation and Transportation

As far as solar power is concerned innovation is far more than just a buzzword. There are a vast number of innovations that are driving solar growth and contributing to the industry's bright future.

One novel approach involves using the sun's energy to manufacture solar panels.

Perhaps the most revolutionary applications involve solar powered transportation. Sun powered vehicles can significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

The number of solar innovations run the gamut from pragmatic to fantastic. Some fascinating solar powered concepts not only reduce our footprint but help to clean up the environment. One example is the solar sponge which can harvest and sequester carbon from the air.

Recognizing Sustainability Leadership in Business

The horrendously irresponsible behavior of some corporations generates well warranted public mistrust, however, tarring all companies with the same brush is a gross injustice to the sustainability leadership shown by many firms.

For more than a decade, early adopters have been leading the charge to craft a more ecologically friendly world. Now those who led the way have helped that approach morph into a key success factor that adds value and provides a competitive advantage.

There are a number of companies who are assuming a leadership role in efforts to protect the environment, mitigate against climate change and educate the public. While it is easy to understand why some fall prey to the mistaken belief that the bigger the corporation, the greater the level of corporate irresponsibility, this is simply not so. Some corporate giants like Unileverdemonstrate that you can be a global corporate force and be responsible at the same time. Another well known company that is a global leader in sustainability is Patagonia. Their corporate conduct is exemplary.

There are many other companies that do not get the public recognition they deserve. Here is a review of some of the recent efforts being taking by ten diverse businesses in defense of a healthy planet. Some are well known while others, less so. This broad cross section of initiatives samples the responsible conduct of ten different companies.

AECOM

AECOM is a global company that is making a positive impact in a broad range of market segments. They have incorporated sustainability into their operations and community activities. They were named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute for the third-consecutive year and they are a signatory and participant in the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate responsibility initiative. AECOM's 2012 employees are leaders in volunteerism and along with the company, they have contributed 3.5 million in charitable donations last year.

Ceres

Ceres is a charitythat has not only incorporates sustainability into all of their activities, they are actively helping others to do the same. Their Roadmap for Sustainabilityand Interactive Website educates people and companies about the different elements of sustainability.

Ecotricity

Renewable energy pioneer Ecotricity is a maverick company that has launched an effective approach aimed at raising awareness about the need for clean energy. They are driving renewable energy awareness through an animated video, which has received more than 2.6 million views. This video addresses the pressing need to replace traditional power stations with green technology. This humorous and touching short film deals with the end of the fossil fuel industry and the rise of renewable (wind) energy.

IBM

IBM has been a green leader for more than three decades. During this time they have been recognized for their environmental efforts and in 2012, they received the European Union Code of Conduct for Data Centers Award in recognition of their long term efforts. IBM's innovation in the corporate world includes some stellar examples of consumer education. The firm's Smarter Planet Initiative encourages consumers to live a more sustainable life.

Samsung

Samsung Electronics is actively involved in greening their management, products, processes, workplace, and communities. Their take-back and recycle program is a model that keeps e-waste out of landfills. Through the program, old products can be given back in stores and efficiently recycled. This is a critical initiative as the problem of e-waste is an every growing concern.

Sony

This energy efficiency giant is also a leader in social responsibility and sustainability. They are a model for their efforts to encourage employee volunteerism with over 20,000 Sony staff members involved in efforts to feed the hungry, build homes for the needy and clean waterways.

Vestergaard Frandsen

As reviewed in the film Carbon for Water(2012), Vestergaard Fandsen shows the life-changing effect of disease control with water filters in rural Western Kenya. The firm’s Carbon for Water project, which is funded by carbon credits, delivers safe water to 4.5m people in the region, improving the health and well-being of 900,000 families, slowing deforestation and cutting 2.4m tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Veja

Some companies like Veja are changing the traditional business paradigm altogether. Veja is an ethical footwear brand that has a ‘no advertising’ policy, the company communicates the environmental and social benefits of its products through a mix of PR, social media and events. The brand rewards workers fairly for their work, and uses sustainable materials and methods like real rubber, natural dyes and organically farmed cotton. Even their shipping is more sustainable as they emply boats rather than air freight. The company's ethical values have succeeded in increasing sales more than 10 fold.

Volkswagen

The German automaker is behind some of the greener cars on the market. Volkswagen's holistic approach drives their concept of “thinking blue,” which is about both saving energy and living more efficiently. They offer the public 
a number of green tips in their‘ Think Blue Blog.”

Walt Disney

Walt Disney has more influence on children than any other company on earth. They are a sustainability leader through three core values: Act, Champion and Inspire. Act ethically and consider the consequences of your decisions on people and the planet. Champion happiness and well-being of kids and families. Inspire kids and families to make positive changes in the world that last.

Even some corporate citizens that have questionable records are getting serious about increasing their sustainability efforts. One such company is Apple. While they were previously the subject of widespread criticism, they are making significant inroads in their sustainability efforts which include going 100 percent renewable. With the hiring of former EPA chief Lisa Jackson in May, the company appears to be committed to improving its environmental record, “I wasn’t going to go anywhere that didn’t espouse those values,” Jackson recently told a crowd at GreenBiz.com’s VERGE conference in San Francisco.

Businesses worldwide are improving their environmental and social performances and educating people about sustainability in ways that inspire behavior change. Minimizing environmental impacts and being more socially responsible is also a matter of reducing costs and increasing profits. Such activities benefit a firm's reputation and positions them to thrive as we become increasingly concerned about social and environmentally issues. Most importantly, such businesses are reducing their adverse impacts and providing a model for the world. It takes time and effort to become a green leader, but smart companies are making the investment and reaping lucrative dividends.

In a world where some corporations continue to ignore their social and environmental responsibilities, it is important to recognize responsible businesses for their groundbreaking leadership.

AECOM's Sustainability Leadership

AECOM is a global company that delivers solutions that create, enhance and sustain the world's built, natural, and social environments. AECOM provides professional technical and management support services for public and private clients in 140 countries around the world. They are active in a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government.

AECOM views sustainability as helping clients, society and its operations address complex challenges by managing financial, natural, social and human capital that work together to advance human progress with less risk. With revenues of $8.2 billion during the 12 months ended March 31, 2013, AECOM demonstrates that being a good corporate citizen can also be very profitable.

As reported in a Marketwatch article, AECOM published its second annual global sustainability report on May 7, 2013, it is titled, "Complex Problems. Integrated Solutions."

"As a visionary company with an incredibly diverse set of skills, we have the opportunity to solve some of the world's most complex and pressing challenges," said John M. Dionisio, AECOM chairman and chief executive officer. "Making a positive impact in the world remains our top priority, and this report showcases some of the many ways that we incorporate the various aspects of sustainability into our projects, operations and community activities."

Some of AECOM's fiscal year 2012 highlights include:

Being named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute for the third-consecutive year.

AECOM's 2012 employee and company donations to charitable and philanthropic organizations globally totaled more than US$3.5 million. AECOM employees logged thousands of volunteer hours with its CSR partner organizations in more than 100 countries.

AECOM became a signatory and participant in the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate responsibility initiative, with more than 8,000 business and non-business participants in 135 countries.

From winning the master plan design contract for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Paralympic games to spearheading the largest new construction project in Beijing, the Tongzhou New City, AECOM projects continue to solve some of the world's most complex challenges.

"I am pleased with the solid progress AECOM made towards its sustainability objectives during the last year, as readers will see in the report," said Gary Lawrence, AECOM vice president and chief sustainability officer. Unilever: A Sustainable Corporate Giant

Unilever is an international consumer goods giant that is engaged in a wide range of sustainability initiatives. The company manufactures everything from ice cream to soap and in 2013 they announced that they had managed to make massive cuts in their carbon emissions, use less energy, significantly reduce waste, minimize water consumption, and increased the amount of sustainably sourced raw materials.


Sustainability at the Core

At Unilever sustainability is embedded in their core business strategy.  The company’s sustainability director for manufacturing, John Maguire, said in a statement: "Eco-efficiency isn’t just about reducing the environmental footprint it also makes good business sense..."

In an April, 2013 report, the company described how brands that "have made sustainability central to their brand proposition or product innovation have accelerated sales during 2012."

Paul Polman's Sustainability Leadership

Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever is an undisputed green leader among corporate behemoths. Polman's comprehensive sustainability philosophy has embedded sustainability into Unilever's DNA. As Polman explained, “we are not out there just to make money, but to satisfy consumer needs and doing it well, we will make money.” He also said, “If you buy into this long-term value-creation model, which is equitable, which is shared, which is sustainable, then come and invest with us. If you don’t buy into this, I respect you as a human being, but don’t put your money in our company.”

Polman believes that if businesses don’t act responsibly, they will be ‘thrown out of office’ by the consumers.
While most businesses are concerned about how they can use society and the environment to be successful, under Polman's stewardship, Unilever changed the paradigm and focused the company on how they can contribute to society and be successful.

Sustainable Living Plan

Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan includes more than 50 social, economic and environmental targets such as its goal to reduce by 50 percent the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste. 

In 2010, Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, set the ambitious goal of doubling its business while halving the environmental footprint of its products and boosting its positive social impact

 sourcing 100 percent of agricultural raw materials sustainably, all by 2020. 

Sustainably Sourced Raw Materials

Under the Sustainable Living Plan Unilever plans to source all of its agricultural raw materials from sustainable sources by 2020. Currently, more one-third (36 percent) of its agricultural raw materials products come from sustainable sources which exceeded their goal for 2013. The company has also committed to sustainably sourcing 100 percent of its paper and board packaging by 2020.

Unilever doubled the amount of the palm oil it draws from sustainable sources in 2010. According to Unilver’s most recent sustainability report, the company now sources 100 percent of palm oil from sustainable sources, and it is making significant progress on the sustainable sourcing of sugar, cocoa, vegetables and sunflower oil.

Unilever and its partners are also behind an initiative titled Tea 2030, a project aimed at developing sustainability innovations to help secure the industry’s long-term future. The company helped to train 450,000 tea farmers in sustainable practices, of whom over 300,000 have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification.

After years of collaboration with Solazyme, Unilever recently agreed to buy at least 10,000 metric tons of algal oil from the renewable oil and bioproducts company. Delivery will begin early in 2014 and the relationship between the two companies is expected to expand going forward.

Carbon Reduction

The company has reduced its CO2 emissions by 838,000 tonnes in its manufacturing activities and improved efficiency in its logistics operations which helped the company to cut an additional 211,000 tonnes of C02 since 2008.

Waste Reduction

In 2012, more than half of Unilever’s factories achieved the goal of sending no waste to landfill. The early achievement of this target prompted the company to advance its zero waste goal by five years (2015 rather than 2020). By the end of 2015, Unilever’s 252 factories worldwide will not send any non-hazardous waste to landfill. The key drivers of their success are recycling and reuse.

Unilever is not just highlighting its own efforts it is reaching out into the communities they serve and making environmental heroes out of consumers. This is the thinking behind its food waste initiative which is helping families reduce their household waste while saving money on food bills. The company is using the results of this initiative to inform future brand marketing and behavior change campaigns.

Sustain Ability Challenge

To accomplish their ambitious sustainability goals Unilever launched a campaign titled the "Sustain Ability Challenge," which is part of the company’s Sustainable Living Plan. Challenge is intended to engage with civil society, companies, government and other key stakeholders to develop new models of collaboration and study consumer behavior so that they can move to the next level in sustainable living.

More than 2,200 sustainability leaders and experts, representing 77 countries, registered for the first Unilever Sustainable Living Lab, a 24-hour live, online dialogue that ran from April 25th to 26th. Discussion topics included sustainable sourcing; sustainable production and distribution; consumer behavior change; recycling and waste.

Partner to Win 

Unilever’s Partner to Win program works closely with suppliers to increase sustainability and among other things, the program supports carbon-reduction. One of the joint ventures that are part of this program involves Unilever's partnership with DHL. They are engaged in a series of initiatives designed to increase sustainable practices including developing technology to improve carbon efficiency and reduce waste within global logistics operations.

Help a Child Reach 5 

Unilever's efforts range from global in scope to smaller more regional programs. The Help a Child Reach 5 campaign was launched by Unilever's Lifebuoy brand. This program aims to end preventable deaths of children under five through the simple act of improving hand-washing behaviors in India. This program has been significantly expanded of late.

Unilever is not only being more environmentally and socially responsible they are also seeing significant growth. They are well on their way to achieve their goal of being more socially responsible and cutting their environmental impact in half all while doubling the size of the company.

Awards Recognition and Ratings

Unilever is consistently ranked among the most sustainable companies in the world. They recently  led the Tomorrow’s Value Rating 2013 (TVR), which recognizes companies that increasingly demonstrate “clarity of vision and innovation in their pursuit of a sustainable business model.” 

For the second year in a row, Unilever is the top-rated company in terms of its global warming commitments, according to the Climate Counts 2012-2013 Annual Company Scorecard Report, published in December 2012.

John Paul Selects: New Platform for Sustainable Products and Brands

Course - Wind Power Planning School

Course - Wind Energy (WND)

Wind Energy (WND) will take place on Sunday Sep 8, 2013, in Woodbridge, ON at the Living City Campus, Kortright Centre, 9550 Pine Valley Drive. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the criteria for the selection of a wind energy system.

Participants will explore the fundamentals of wind energy, its components, and the application of off-grid and grid-tied wind systems. Topics covered will include the various types and sizes of machines, towers and the procedures for installation. The instructor will also be conducting a tour of the seven installed wind turbines along the Kortright Power Trip Trail. Portions of the day will be spent outdoors; participants should dress accordingly. (Lunch is provided).

Wind Energy Storage Solution Employing Concrete Spheres

Offshore wind holds tremendous promise, however the intermittent and unpredictable presence of wind imposes limits on this technology. However a new approach from researchers at MIT may have solved this problem with an approach that stores energy to be used when there is no wind.

This concept employs huge concrete spheres which would anchor wind turbines to the sea floor. When a wind turbine produces more energy than is needed, power would be diverted to drive a pump attached to the underwater structure, pumping seawater from a 30-meter-diameter hollow sphere. Then when there is no wind the water would flow back into the sphere through a turbine attached to a generator, producing energy.

A 25-meter sphere could store up to 6 megawatt-hours of power. One thousand spheres attached to wind turbines could produce as much coal or nuclear plant.

The system could also operate with shore based renewable sources of electricity like solar plants. Preliminary estimates indicate that one such sphere could be built and deployed at a cost of about $12 million but as the spheres are mass produced costs would come down. This could result in an estimated storage cost of about 6 cents per kilowatt-hour.

A 30-inch-diameter prototype was built in 2011 demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. MIT has filed for a patent on the system.

Due to its carbon emissions profile, one of the major problems associated with the concept is the amount of concrete that would be required. To address this problem the concrete spheres could be made, in part, using large quantities of waste fly ash from existing coal plants

The researchers at MIT estimate that these concrete sphere floating wind turbines could create enough capacity to supply one-third of U.S. electricity needs.

Harnessing Wind Energy Without Blades

Wind turbines are a large and growing source of energy but the turning blades have led to concerns about sound and impacts on bird populations. People have also complained that such wind turbines are an eye-sore. A new structure designed by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and installed at the Delft University of Technology convert wind to energy without any moving parts.

The new technological innovation was developed by the Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science faculty at Delft. It uses the movement of electrically charged water droplets to generate power.

The prototype of the EWICON (Electrostatic Wind Energy Converter) is not impacted by traditional wear and tear that limit the life of traditional blade based turbines. As such it requires very little maintenance. Further it makes no noise and casts no shadows.

The new bladeless technology has already been incorporated into the design of a project in Rotterdam.

Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics 2012

Each year Greenpeace publishes its guide to greener electronics just before the Thanksgiving holidays and the shopping event of the year known as Black Friday. This year is the 18th edition of Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics, it profiles a number of new developments.

The Guide evaluates leading consumer electronics companies based on their commitment and progress in three environmental criteria: Energy and Climate, Greener Products, and Sustainable Operations. Click here to download the Ranking Criteria Explained (pdf).
The Greenpeace Electronics Guide scores companies on overall policies and practices – not on specific products – to provide consumers with a snapshot of the sustainability of the biggest names in the industry. Consumers want greener electronics and some of the leading technology providers have responded.

Acer rises in the rankings, thanks in part to ambitious greenhouse gas reduction commitments, both in its own operations and in its supply chain. A number of companies, including HP, Apple and Dell, have improved their performance in identifying and reducing conflict minerals within their supply chain. This edition of the Guide also integrates the evaluation of two Indian companies, HCL Infosystem and Wipro which earns the top spot in the rankings, primarily due to its climate leadership. The company excels in both renewable energy uptake for its operations and more broadly with an excellent greenhouse gas mitigation strategy. Its lobbying for renewable energy policy in India exhibits the type of corporate advocacy leadership needed to drive policy change.

While the industry is moving in the right direction, crucial and growing problems remain. The proliferation of electronic devices are a major source of waste and one of the most serious problems we face as a global society. Greenpeace has identified three serious shortcomings in the global electronics industry.

1) While take-back programs are growing the speed of collection is not keeping pace with the rate of consumption.
2) There are huge amounts of dirty energy embedded in the manufacturing and supply chains, much of it coming from East Asia.
3) Companies must also make an effort to meaningfully engage in the political process to create the ambitious action.
