The NEB says that it is extending the application process due to technical difficulties with their website which prevented people from applying.
Currently there are 1,800 applications. These applications were received between February 3 and March 3. According to 350.org, 1,200, or two thirds of the applications submitted so far have come from the climate movement. The NEB will determine which applicants it will approve to participate.There are an additional 5 information sessions being held over the next week.
If they accept the vast majority of applicants they will be forced to include climate impacts in their assessments, if they reject them, they will be subject to criticism for failing to acknowledge a large portion of Canadian opinion.
The National Energy Board is an independent federal regulator of several parts of Canada's energy industry with the safety of Canadians and protection of the environment as its top priority. Its purpose is to regulate pipelines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest.
