Event - Natural Flood Management

This event is subtitled, "The Evidence Requirements for Wider Delivery," it will take place on September 10, 2014 at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London, in London, UK. Hosted by CIWEM / London, in association with the CIWEM Rivers & Coastal Group.

This conference will assess the experience of employing Natural Flood Management to mitigate flood risk and will assess the evidence requirements for understanding the wider potential of NFM.

About the Event

The flooding experienced in the UK during winter 2013/14 created a high profile discussion concerning the benefits of working more closely with natural processes to mitigate flood risk. Several examples of Natural Flood Management (NFM) were showcased as success stories and there is widespread interest amongst at-risk communities in the range of application of such techniques, their effectiveness and economic efficiency and the ease in which funding may be obtained to implement them.

Whilst NFM is not a new concept, there have been a number of research projects that have recently concluded, which, combined with fresh interest in the approach, are timely in expanding the evidence base underpinning understanding of the application and effectiveness of NFM.

This one day conference will:

Launch the Environment Agency's research framework on NFM
Summarise key messages of the recently published Channel Management Handbook
Present outcomes from Forest Research's opportunity mapping for NFM work in the Midlands and North East England
Consider the results of the Aquatic Plants Project
Consider understanding of key interactions between land use management and flood risk
Assess the evidence requirements for understanding the potential for NFM in large catchments
Assess the experience of employing NFM in England, devolved administrations and abroad
Examine the available funding routes available to landowners
