Toyota retained the top spot on Interbrand’s 2013 Best Global Green Brands ranking for the third year running. Toyota’s 2013 Prius line is dominating the greener car market. The Toyota Prius C, a compact version of the Prius that boasts fuel economy of 53 mpg city and 46 mpg highway. The Prius is one of the best vehicles on the market in terms of tailpipe emissions.
Combined the four model variations of the Prius sold 236,659 units last year, making the vehicle the Toyota Prius the most popular hybrid car in the US. In total more than 2.9 million Prius models were sold worldwide in 2012.
Toyota is also getting involved with hydrogen fuel cell powered cars. The company has partnered with BMW to collaborate on the development of a fuel cell system, Toyota will begin selling its fuel-cell sedan in the US in 2014. Typically, EV batteries provide a range of less than 100 miles per charge, while fuel cell vehicles like Toyota's hybrid Highlander SUV has a 300-mile range per tank of hydrogen.
At the New York International Auto Show, Toyota unveiled a new generation of Toyota Highlander crossover vehicles including a version of the Highlander hybrid.
Toyota takes green innovation to the next level with its low-carbon society called Toyota Ecoful Town in Toyota City, Japan.
As reported in Energy Manager Today, Toyota is also the undisputed leader in green patents with 207 clean energy research and development patents in 2012.
