After a delay of almost three years construction has begun to install solar panels on the White House Roof. In 2010, then Energy Secretary Steven Chu first announced the plan to install solar panels on the White House. However, it was not until Thursday August 15, 2013 that the construction actually began.
“This project reflects President Obama’s strong commitment to U.S. leadership in solar energy and the jobs it will create here at home,” Chu said at the time. “Deploying solar energy technologies across the country will help America lead the global economy for years to come.”
Way back in 1979 Democratic President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House roof. They were subsequently dismantled by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
One of America's leading environmental voices, 350.org founder Bill McKibben, led a campaign in 2010 to encourage the White House to "put solar on it."
“No one should ever have taken down the panels Jimmy Carter put on the roof,” McKibben said in an emailed press statement. “But it's very good to know that once again the country's most powerful address will be drawing some of that power from the sun.” electricity, energy, evolving, growing, increase, increasing, more, power, renewable energy, renewables, rising, sun,
