Event - The Role and Future of EIA

This event will take place on 20 Feb 13 - 20 Feb 13 at SOAS in London. The event is subtitled EIA - Putting it in Context and Making it fit for Purpose. The event will deal with European Environmental Impact Assessment Proposals. This conference will provide an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders from different perspectives including developers, policy makers, legal experts, regulators and EIA and other appraisal practitioners to set out their views.

In October 2012 the European Commission outlined its proposals to streamline environmental impact assessment. The proposals are intended to lighten administrative burdens and make it easier to assess the potential impacts of major projects, without weakening existing environmental safeguards.

Over the next year Member States will provide feedback to the European Commission on their view of the proposals.

This conference will provide an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders from different perspectives including developers, policy makers, legal experts, regulators and EIA and other appraisal practitioners to set out their views.

Much has changed since the last time the EIA Directive was revised and this conference will look at the proposals from three main perspectives:

1. The political climate across Europe and in the UK is being driven by the need to see effective regulation that is fit for purpose and which supports the growth agenda.
2. Critically in a world where the need for sustainable development is widely recognised by many Governments, agencies and professionals, integrated processes that recognise the role of a range of appraisal tools are growing in importance. EIA needs to be set more clearly in this broader context.
3. The current EIA Directive has its strengths and weaknesses and this meeting will provide a timely opportunity to review this in the context both of the EC Proposals but the also the wider political and integration agenda.
