Climate Positions of Canada's Major Federal Parties

What would each of the three major parties vying for power in Canada's October 19th federal elections do to combat climate change and what would their positions be at COP21? The goal of the UN climate conference in Paris (COP21) is to secure an agreement that would keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial times.

To help Canadians assess what each of the three parties would do to combat climate change and their positions as we head towards the Paris climate talks, Environmental Defence has put together a comparative analysis of the three federal parties.

This comparison explores each party's positions on four main issues: The post-2020 carbon emission reduction targets, the main mechanism for reaching that target, tar sands emissions, and contributions to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) designed to help developing countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

  1. It is widely assumed by advocates of fossil fuels and of RE as well that using renewable energy will increase our energy costs in spite of the fact that the renewable energy sources are free. This is not true. Employing technologies like exergy storage (an advanced form of energy storage)would reduce the RE costs as compared to fossil fuels for applications like power generation and heating/cooling and that would make it unnecessary to apply carbon taxes or cap-and-trade for those applications. Governments should look to the science first.
