The Montreal Pledge: Institutional Investors Working Towards Decarbonization through Disclosure

The Montreal Pledge was launched in 2014 and it requires signatories to measure and disclose the carbon footprint of their investment portfolio on an annual basis. The ambitious goal of the initiative is to get investors worth a total of $3 trillion to make the pledge before the COP21 climate talks scheduled for Paris at the end of this year.

The Pledge was launched on September 25, 2014 at PRI in Person in Montréal and is supported by Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and the United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

The program is designed to enable investors (asset owners and investment managers) to formalize their commitment to the goals of the recently announced Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition (PDC).

The PDC is a multi-stakeholder initiative intended to drive greenhouse gas emissions reductions by mobilizing institutional investors to decarbonize their portfolios. Investors who sign-on to the Coalition are focused on disclosing their carbon footprints and decarbonizing.

Between September 2014 and December 2015 this community of institutional investors worth at least $500 billion will measure and disclose their carbon footprints. The Montreal Pledge is the delivery mechanism for this target. A second PDC goal is to assemble a coalition of investors who will commit to decarbonizing at least $100 billion in institutional investment in the same 14 month time frame.

More than 50 investors have already signed up to the Montréal Pledge.
