Briefing - A Carbon Tax will Create Jobs

Despite dire predictions and vociferous disagreement from some conservatives, a new study heralds the benefits of a carbon tax. On Monday June 9, 2014 at 1 p.m. EDT (10 a.m. PDT) there will be an online briefing that will reveal the results of a new economic study which shows that a carbon tax will create jobs. The ground breaking study will be released by Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL). It was prepared by Regional Economic Models, Inc., (REMI). This study examines the nationwide economic impact of a steadily-rising tax on carbon that returns revenue to households. Among other findings, the report shows such a tax will add 2.2 million jobs over 10 years while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent.

The general assumption, until now, has been that solutions to address global warming will be a drag on the economy and lead to loss of jobs. The new REMI study turns that assumption on its head, showing that a carbon tax – if done the right way – will grow the economy and add jobs.

The online briefing will review the findings in a REMI report titled The Economic, Climate, Fiscal, Power, and Demographic Impact of a National Fee-and-Dividend Carbon Tax. It will be conducted by Scott Nystrom, Senior Economic Associate with REMI; Mark Reynolds, Executive Director of Citizens Climate Lobby; Danny Richter, Legislative Director of Citizens Climate Lobby.
