On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez ran aground near Prince William Sound in Alaska. That epic spill released 10.5 million gallons of crude oil in what was then the worst environmental disaster in US history. This spill 25 years ago illustrates the true cost of oil. It ravaged the local ecology, killed scores of wildlife, cost billions of dollars, and it lingers in some areas to this day.
