The Basic Elements of a Green College

Green schools are increasingly common, they play a very important role in preparing the youth of today for the jobs of tomorrow. They also train people already in the workforce for new responsibilities in the green economy. Ideally, in addition to a sustainability focused education, green schools have a physical infrastructure that serves as a working model of green buildings. Green schools also have a behavioral component that translates to shared sustainable practices by the student body. Here are some of the basic elements that make green schools green.

Green Curriculums
Programs of study that focus on the environment and sustainability.

Green Buildings
Buildings that are energy efficient, or retrofits of existing buildings that make them more efficient. Ideally they will have LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

Green Dorms
Dorms equipped with energy-efficient, heating, cooling, lighting, and water-efficiency.

Community Service
College community programs that are concered with the environment, like forest or shore line clean-ups.

Green Jobs
Placement program for green jobs that span the gamut from internships to career track green employment.

Reuse
Making sure things like old books and even electronics are reused rather than discarded which can includes trading with other students.

Recycle
A ubiquitous and easily accessible recycling program.
