Event - Green Schools Summit Colorado

This event will take place on Friday November 14, 2014 at the University of Denver. The Green Schools Summit draws over 300 attendees and features education breakout sessions and exciting keynote speakers. This year’s theme is 21st Century Schools, they will consider how to design, build and maintain 21st Century Schools. The Green Schools Summit is an annual education and networking event hosted by USGBC Colorado and organized by a dedicated group of volunteers from the Green Schools Initiative.

Sessions and Speakers

The keynotes feature Karl Fisch, Colorado teacher and author of YouTube hit "Shift Happens", and Dr. John Medina, author of the New York Times Bestseller "Brain Rules".

State Funding Panel

The State of Colorado funds programs designed to help build, remodel and operate sustainable schools. This panel will provide updates on both well known and underutilized funding opportunities and resources.

Stop Building Schools: What kind of spaces should we create for today's learners?

Karl Fisch

Director of Technology, Arapahoe High School. With over 5.5 million YouTube hits since its 2008 debut, Karl Fisch’s “Shift Happens” video highlights serious questions about America’s education system. Karl’s opening keynote at the Green Schools Summit will share insights about teaching 21st Century students and consider more meaningful ways to go about planning future learning spaces.

Brain Rules for Educators and Environmental Impact on Learning

Dr. John Medina

Author of the New York Times bestseller "Brain Rules" and the national bestseller "Brain Rules for Baby" Dr. John J. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and private research consultant. He holds joint affiliate faculty appointments at the University of Washington School of Medicine, in its Department of Bioengineering, and at Seattle Pacific University, where he is the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research. As the father of two boys, he has an interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children. In addition to his research, consulting, and teaching, Medina speaks often to public officials, business and medical professionals, school boards, and nonprofit leaders.

Breakout Sessions

Education tracks are organized around the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Three Pillars: reduce environmental impact and costs; improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and provide environmental education. The technical track is designed with green building industry practitioners in mind and dives deeper into the topic identified.
