Ecovillages Environmental Study Program

Living Routes Ecovillages environmental study program brings education to life by creating learning opportunities in ecological communities all around the world. Ecovillages moves beyond theory and exposes students to real-world issues including sustainable development and green building.

Ecovillages are communities with the goal of becoming more socially, economically and ecologically sustainable. The Ecovillages environmental program includes study in places like Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Israel, India, Scotland and Australia.

The Ecovillages program exposes students to real world solutions to real world issues in real time as they unfold on the ground. Students that enroll in the Ecovillages program can earn college credit from the University of Massachusetts Amherst through their study abroad program.

Through academic and experiential coursework, environmental community service learning, and cultural excursions, students develop the understanding, skills and commitment to embark on careers that are destined to make a difference.

Ecovillages is an innovative program that puts students on the front lines of implementing solutions to global climate change.

The Green Business League Sustainability Officer Training

The Green Business League provides training to become a sustainability officer. Known as the GBL Certified Sustainability Officer™ training, the program covers everything from the fundamentals to the creation of a sustainability plan.

Although the program is available through live classes in select locations, it is also available online, and uses video training, PowerPoint illustrations, and downloadable text.

A Certified Sustainability Officer™ is trained to do a basic assessment of the company's operations, compose a sustainability policy and plan, and to assist the company in achieving its Green business certification.

The Green Business League has been the leader in Green business certification for nearly a decade. Their sustainable officer training program places a strong emphasis on efficiencies and smart applications that will cut costs, improve operations, and maximize the resources. Beyond greater efficiency and lower costs, a sustainability plan improves a business and increases its market appeal.

The GBL Sustainability Officer training instructs participants on how to develop a comprehensive sustainability plan that plan can be tailored to any company. An in-house officer can also maintain a work schedule while enrolled in the online program.

How to Become a Sustainability Officer

There are four basic requirements for those seeking to become a sustainability officer: Relevant education, related work, leadership experience, and communication skills.

Beyond a keen interest in the environment, a sustainability officer should also be adept at working in teams.

The first requirement to become a sustainability officer is to complete a post-secondary education program in environmental studies or sustainability at an accredited university or college.

The second requirement for a sustainability officer is work experience. Although related work experience is important, it could include something as accessible as volunteer work with an environmental organization.

The third requirement to become a sustainability officer is leadership. Because leadership skills are transferable, they need not be acquired in an experience associated with sustainable environmental initiatives.

The fourth requirement to become a sustainability officer is being an effective communicator. Presentation, written and verbal skills are essential attributes. Ideally, people considering a career in the field will have experience in communications that involves writing releases or newsletters, or organizing information campaigns.

Ongoing education is vital to keeping up on best practices as well as networking amongst sustainable professionals to keep abreast of the newest developments.

The Growth of Green School Sustainability Officers

Increasingly colleges and universities are including staff positions devoted to advancing sustainability on campus. The individuals that occupy these positions are sometimes referred to as Sustainable Coordinators or College Sustainability Officers.

A school sustainability officer is someone who is responsible for coordination, management, and administration of the school's environmental programs. In its simplest essence, this implies reducing the usage of non-renewable resources and better management of existing resources.

College Sustainability Officers are similar to the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) in the corporate world. Other job titles for environmentally oriented postions include:

Environmental Policy Manager
Director of Environment, Energy, & Safety
Director of Social & Environmental Responsibility
Chief Officer of Environment
Social & Environmental Sustainability Manager
Chief of EHS
Chief Green Officer (CGO)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

A CSO is an executive position within a corporation that is in charge of the corporation's environmental programs. Starting in the 21st century, companies began creating such positions to formalize their commitment to the environment. As sustainability initiatives have expanded, so has the importance of the position to what is now a C-level executive role.

Examples of CSOs include Charlene Lake at AT&T, Paul Gilman at Covanta Energy, Linda Fischer at Dupont, Robyn Beavers at Google, Dr. Peter Graf at SAP, Barbara Kux at Siemens, Mike Kelly at YRC Worldwide and Ian Hill at Openreach. In September 2010, General Mills appointed Jerry Lynch as their new CSO, and AECOM named Gary Lawrence as the firm's Vice President and CSO.

As of 2005, nearly all of the 150 largest companies in the world had a sustainability officer with the rank of vice president or higher, and numerous MBA programs had incorporated sustainability training.

According to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, there are now 88 permanent sustainable positions in colleges and universities in North America and this number is growing each year.

IMD and WWF's Sustainable Business Program

The WWF's One Planet Leaders Program (OPL) is now being taught at Lausanne, Switzerland's IMD. The WWF and IMD's innovative training program drives sustainability into the core of business.

The program’s learning focus is on developing a winning business case and robust strategy for change, leading to sustainable practices which also deliver more profit to the company. The program is designed for leaders who operate at a strategic level and can drive change, and is also open to managers in business functions such as general management, R&D, procurement/supply, marketing and sales; and in sustainability functions.

Participants are part of a global network of peers and experts, and learn from an inspiring faculty which draws from the best of academia, NGOs and the private sector. The program began in fall 2010 and features three 3-day modules focused on strategy, change management and leadership in the sustainability context.

Participants work on their real-world sustainability challenges while being introduced to the complex issues and best practices in sustainability. Pre-, inter- and post-module support will help participants drive and sustain their sustainability change initiatives.

Companies will benefit by having their top managers drive innovation to build competitive advantage while solving some of the key sustainability challenges facing the planet.

WWF's One Planet Leaders Program

The One Planet Leaders (OPL) program teaches sustainable business development. It was first launched by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007, and since that time 200 business leaders have completed the course.

OPL originates from a series of workshops on sustainable business development run with WWF corporate partners. Today it includes an accredited Masters level Executive Education programme – available in Europe and Asia Pacific; three Modular Workshops – accessible as customized training in companies and in regions; a stand-alone Sustainability Master class; an active global Alumni Community; and a One Planet MBA under development.

The goal of OPL is to teach leaders how to manage the planet's limited resources as they build the global economy. Climate, security, food, health, justice and economic growth - these are big issues and the way we manage our environment is vital to all of them.

The private sector has a key role to play in reversing the trends of environmental degradation and social inequality, and is uniquely positioned to lead global solutions through new business models and innovation.

OPL is helping companies meet these challenges. It develops dynamic leaders who can integrate sustainability into all aspects of decision making and build a better more equitable society.

Green School Census

Although green schools are proliferating, determining the exact number depends on how you define green. An orthodox interpretation would suggest that a truly green school involves both green building certification and a sustainable curriculum.

Green building is a strong and growing trend, according to green building industry leader Jerry Yudelson, green building has continued to grow worldwide, even through the recession. With corporate America greening its real estate portfolio, it is estimated that 10 percent of all commercial construction starts are now green. The estimated value of green building construction has grown to $60 billion in 2010.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction and LEED certification. LEED rating systems are developed through an open, consensus-based process led by LEED committees. Since 2000, USGBC membership has more than quadrupled to 19,957 member organizations and over 5 billion square feet of commercial building space.

While USGBC offers industry leading certification, it may not be the best way to assess the number of green schools. There are a number of schools that do not have LEED certification, but due to their sustainable curriculums, merit being counted as green.

Green curriculums are teaching the skills that will empower people to engage the environmental challenges we face. Sustainable programs are proliferating rapidly, according to a book by Bob Willard, The Next Sustainability Wave: Building Boardroom Buy-In, as of 2005 there were already numerous MBA programs that had integrated sustainability training. As of 2010 green MBAs can be found all across America.

An inclusive approach to assessing the number of green schools involves counting those schools that have made a public commitment to incorporating sustainability into their educational programs and operations. Around the world, there are more than 400 schools that have made a such a pledge.

In a 1990 document known as the Talloires Declaration, school administrators signed-on to a ten-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach.

There are currently 419 signatories of the Talloires Declaration, 164 of these schools are located in the United States, with large concentrations in Canada, England, Brazil, and Australia.

Green Buildings Combat Climate Change

Green buildings offer a tremendously reduced environmental footprint compared to traditional buildings.

Buildings are one of the heaviest consumers of natural resources and account for a significant portion of global warming causing greenhouse gas emissions.

Buildings are huge consumers of raw materials, they account for 40% of the global raw materials demand or 3 billion tons annually.

US Buildings represent 38.9 percent of primary energy use and account for 38 percent of the country's CO2 emissions. US Buildings consume 13.6 percent of the nations potable water, or 15 trillion gallons per year.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that at least 136 million tons of building related construction and demolition debris are generated in the US each year.

The alternatives to traditional buildings offer major savings. LEED certified green buildings offer a 30 percent energy saving, 35 percent carbon saving, 30-50 percent water saving and a 50-90 percent waste saving.

When combined with long term cost savings, the significantly reduced enviromental impact makes green building the obvious choice.

China Turns to International Community to Learn about Green Buildings

China is seeking to learn more about green buildings with the help of leading nations in the international community.

The Chinese government has pledged to speed up construction of green buildings. To accomplish this goal, the government has sought out the expertise of the international community.

Li Bingren, chief economist at the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said, the government has signed a memorandum of understanding on green buildings with a number of other countries, including the US, France, Germany and Singapore.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has been holding seminars related to climate change and green building that has allowed Chinese officials to learn from the experience of foreign countries, Li added.

Although China still has a long way to go to catch up with international leaders in the realm of green building, they are moving in the right direction.

The Development of Sustainable Education at South China Normal University

An international partnership is working with Chinese schools to advance sustainable education in China. South China Normal University (SCNU) is one of the leading pedagogical universities in Guangdong.

Educators in China, Japan, and the US are sharing best practices, developing sustainable curriculums and encouraging student involvement. SCNU is working with ISC, Local Ecological Activities Foundation for Children (LEAF) of Japan, and Shelburne Farms of the United States, to adapt cutting edge practices in sustainable development education to the Chinese context.

A series of local and international exchanges are connecting Chinese educators with teachers around the world exposing them to new methods and information. The best sustainable development education information will be adapted and incorporated into teacher training, curriculum development, resource guides and practical projects.

International efforts in support of universities like SCNU demonstrate how the transfer of knowledge is helping Chinese schools to develop sustainable education programs.
