Natural Building Webinar

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Mason Sustainability Institute (MSI) will offer a free webinar on “natural building.” The webinar will provide a basic understanding of what constructing a natural building means, what materials to use and how to construct a home from those materials. The webinar will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at www.anymeeting.com.

Naturally built homes carry a significantly lighter environmental impact compared to most modern construction. Natural building principles work through ecosystems and life already present on the proposed property.

Cliff Davis, co-director of Spiral Ridge Permaculture Gardens, will be the webinar instructor. Spiral Ridge Permaculture Gardens is a permaculture homestead and design firm in the Cumberland-Green bioregion of middle Tennessee.

In December 2007, this 6.7-acre site was clear-cut, which caused major damage to the soil, wildlife habitat and the watershed. Davis and his wife, Jennifer, acquired the land in 2009 intending to reverse the damage using permaculture practices.

MSI has provided educational classes and skill development for Mason and surrounding communities since 2007, bringing together residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, Mason faculty, staff and students, as well as local government officials, to empower them to become sustainable stewards for Northern Virginia. Past workshops have covered organic vegetable gardening, beekeeping basics and bike maintenance, among other topics.
