The Green Business League provides training to become a sustainability officer. Known as the GBL Certified Sustainability Officer™ training, the program covers everything from the fundamentals to the creation of a sustainability plan.

Although the program is available through live classes in select locations, it is also available online, and uses video training, PowerPoint illustrations, and downloadable text.

A Certified Sustainability Officer™ is trained to do a basic assessment of the company's operations, compose a sustainability policy and plan, and to assist the company in achieving its Green business certification.

The Green Business League has been the leader in Green business certification for nearly a decade. Their sustainable officer training program places a strong emphasis on efficiencies and smart applications that will cut costs, improve operations, and maximize the resources. Beyond greater efficiency and lower costs, a sustainability plan improves a business and increases its market appeal.

The GBL Sustainability Officer training instructs participants on how to develop a comprehensive sustainability plan that plan can be tailored to any company. An in-house officer can also maintain a work schedule while enrolled in the online program.

The program is ideal for business owners who want to look into Green business certification. It is also well suited to green officers and other business people. Unemployed business people can gain expertise that will add value to their resume and job prospects.

Hult International Business School Publication "Greenovate!"

A Hult International Business School publication named "Greenovate!" is the first publication in the Beyond Eureka! series of studies by the Center for Innovation, Excellence, and Growth (IXL). The joint publication explores the topic of developing consistent and dependable processes of innovation as well as how companies can employ environmentally-friendly strategies and turn a profit.

The companies they profile include one that makes smart, solar-powered garbage cans that signal trash collectors when they are full, thus reducing fuel costs. This is but one innovative example of the 50 companies featured in the inaugural publication.

The book examines a range of industries and many different products that are profiting from the adoption of sustainable business practices. Each company profile includes the goals and barriers encountered.

Research compiled for a unique hands-on MBA consulting course by the Hult graduating class of 2009 was also incorporated into the book. The publication clearly illustrates that the confluence of good business sense with environmentally-friendly strategies can enhance a product or service.

Ferrum College's Climate Research Opportunities

Ferrum College offers an excellent undergraduate program and great opportunities for environmental research. Ferrum College professors Bob Pohlad and Carolyn Thomas are part of a team that will receive $494,980 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for environmental research related to climate change.

The money will be used to establish a national ecological and education network that will begin with 12 primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and expand to colleges and universities throughout the United States. The work has been shown to be significant both in terms of tracking environmental issues, and increased student learning and understanding.

Collaborative projects engage students in scientific research while teaching them basic ecology, “It’s unusual for undergraduate students to be able to do this kind of research,” said Thomas.

“It’s important to point out that students at Ferrum College and the 11 other PUIs, will be out in the woods and wading streams — taking measurements, studying wildlife, and learning how to use the data.” Thomas explained that the data is combined with research from other institutions, so scientists can measure changes over time.

"What is most important," Thomas expained, is that “students will be learning, while the world gains a clearer picture of what’s happening around us.”

The University of Oregon's Interdisciplinary MBA and Green Chemistry Programs

The University of Oregon's (UO) Londquist College of Business offers an Interdisciplinary MBA and a Green Chemistry Program. UO's interdisciplinary MBA involves different departments and includes subjects like Landscape Architecture, Planning and Public Policy, and Sustainable Business Practices.

The four primary partners that contribute to UO's interdisciplinary MBA are the PNNL and UO Office of Tech Transfer, which contribute patented or copyrighted technologies that they believe offer commercial potential, and tap their streams of licensing royalty income to support the students’ interdisciplinary technology evaluations.

The second partner is the UO academic department. It provides access to faculty inventors, and helps MBA students network with doctoral students and post-docs in physics, biology, chemistry, materials science, psychology, computer science, education and others.

Thirdly, the LCE contributes M.B.A. students and faculty advisers with expertise in accounting, finance, marketing, and business planning. Finally the Center for Law and Entrepreneurship contributes law students and faculty advisers with expertise in assessing intellectual property.

The UO's Green Chemistry program can help organizations reduce risk and create competitive advantages. Developing greener chemicals, materials, products and processes will help ensure that human health, a sustainable environment and a thriving economy endure.

Oregon is poised to lead the country in developing and applying green chemistry solutions. The state's commitment to sustainability and concentration of pioneering business leaders and world class researchers create fertile ground for innovation.

Walden University's PhD in Sustainability Online Degree

Walden University is now offering the nation's first online PhD program in Public Policy & Sustainability. Walden is an accredited online university, Walden first served the unique needs of working doctoral students four decades ago. Today, they offer more than 10 online doctoral programs with more than 60 specializations.

The Public Policy & Sustainability specialization explores ways of creating and maintaining sustainable communities that are environmentally sound, economically prosperous, and socially equitable. It also explores the interrelated elements that make a community viable and access the tools and resources for sustainable community development.

This degree prepares students for roles such as a town manager, department head, or director of a social service organization. Traditional graduate degree programs related to sustainability are increasing, and their online counterpart is slowly following.

Walden`s doctoral experience features a unique blend of theory, research, and practical application. For working professionals, online programs offer greater flexibility when juggling a busy schedule. With the exception of regular classrooms or face-to-face meetings, online PhD programs are no different from their traditional counterparts.

The online PhD experience can take anywhere from four to six years to complete, as the process entails at least a year and a half of intense studies, directed by a panel of three to five professors who then administer oral or written exams.

The dissertation, or thesis, is a detailed investigation into a very specific aspect of the student’s chosen field. Once the thesis has been defended successfully, it must be filed with the university before the title of "doctor" can be awarded.

See the Walden site for more information or contact a Walden enrollment advisor.

UBC`s PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies

The University of British Columbia (UBC), offers a Resource Management and Environmental Studies (RMES) interdisciplinary graduate program at the Institute for Resource Environment and Sustainability (IRES). Amongst its many graduate degrees, IRES offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.

The academic program is flexible and, to a large extent, tailored to the educational goals of the student. A thesis proposal/statement of intent is required at the time of formal application to the program in order to facilitate the selection of an appropriate supervisor, supervisory committee and individual academic direction. The RMES program draws from faculty members' expertise from across the University.

The RMES program's research activities address a range of topics related to land management, environmental assessment, policy analysis, coastal zone management, fisheries management, agroforestry, water resource management, hydrology, energy, negotiation issues, risk perception and assessment, issues of governance, science and policy, and community development.

The program's aim is to integrate the socioeconomic (political) and biophysical (ecological) approaches to resource and environmental issues. To achieve these aims, workshops and seminars are common academic formats.

RMES welcomes applications from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
