Bentley University Sustainability on Campus and in Ghana

Bentley University has made sustainability a priority, not just on campus but in the developing African nation of Ghana. Located just west of Boston, Bentley is a business university with more than 5,000 full-time students. The university has set aggressive goals to eliminate their carbon footprint by 2030. Bentley is reducing their environmental footprint through energy management, and building environmentally conscious retrofits including the installation of LED lights.

Bentley is also purchasing 25 million kWh/yr of RECs which have helped to halve the school's carbon footprint. Bentley was honored by the EPA as a Green Power Partner and earned recognition as one of the top ten Northeast-10 Conference schools in the EPA’s College & University Green Power Challenge.

Bentley's sustainability efforts have gone far beyond the college campus and  now extend all the way to Africa.  Diane M. Kellogg is an associate professor of management at Bentley University and the driving force behind the university's sustainability program in Ghana.

Diane's work in Ghana began when she took over for her friend Carol Gray. Carol was raising money to build an orphanage in the country when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “I want to die knowing the orphanage can support itself, without always needing donations." Carol said to Diane, "You’re a management consultant. You teach at a business school. Could Bentley help?” she asked.

After getting involved, Diane teamed up with Dale Kuntz, a professor of global studies and together they took 12 students to Ghana to study the role of nongovernmental organizations in economic development—and to visit the orphanage. They saw an opportunity to help by teaching them business principles with the idea that this could generate income and make them sustainable.

Soon Bentley’s mission expanded to include an education for students at a business school. Diane coined the term “Partners in Learning,” based on Paul Farmer’s “partners in health” concept described in the book Mountains Beyond Mountains. Along with Bentley's Partners, they began working on things like sanitation, water quality, the poultry industry, and solar power.

Diane then became a collaborator on other global programs and she raised funds for international travel grants and made those available to other programs. Eventually Diane involved 10 other faculty members who taught their courses in Ghana. Then they began taking professional staff to Ghana to assist. They also started a social enterprise on campus to keep students engaged with Ghana year round. They developed eight-week internships in Ghana to offer opportunities for students to get even more deeply involved.

Eventually the project grew to such an extent that Diane was able to convince Bentley to create a position to oversee the growing numbers of faculty, students, partners, and projects. This effort not only benefits the people of Ghana and Bentlely's students, it also provides staff with an opportunity to contribute in practical terms that help to make the country more sustainable.

Cornell University Installing a Solar Array with the Help of NY State

Cornell University is one of several projects that will receive funding for solar installations as part of NY-Sun initiative, launched by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The state has awarded a total of $54 million to Cornell. The state's award will be added to $120 million in private investment designated for infrastructure projects.

Cornell University will instal 6,766 solar photovoltaic panels on a 10-acre Cornell property site adjacent to the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport. This is Cornell’s first large-scale solar project and it is expected to produce about 2.5 million kWh annually, or about 1 percent of Cornell’s total electricity use.

These solar installations are part of Cornell’s Climate Action Plan which seeks to eliminate campus greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by replacing fossil-fuel energy with renewable sources.

The NY-Sun initiative will add 64 MW to the state’s solar capacity. As a function of this round of awards a total of 20 recipients will receive financing for projects at 79 large-scale solar energy sites across the state. Installations will be located at businesses, factories, municipal buildings and colleges. The projects will produce power for on-site use, but some will be able to add unused power to the grid in exchange for future utility credit. Proposals for the third round came in on August 29.

Innovative Approaches to Environmental Education: Taking School Outside

Schools are adopting increasingly innovative approaches to education that help to show children the value of the environment. Some schools are teaching children by bringing them out into nature and enabling them to do things like canoe down a river, hold a bird of prey, and rappel down a cliff wall. These types of activities are of immense value and offer far more than can be achieved in a classroom setting alone.

This is the unique pedagogical approach of WOLF (Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility) program. This novel education is the byproduct of a public-private partnership between the Springfield, Missouri public school system, Bass Pro Shops, and the Wonders of Wildlife Museum.

The WOLF program is being offered to 46 fifth-graders in the 2013 - 2014 school year. The lucky students who get to participate in this free program were chosen through a lottery system. Students not only participate in fun outdoor activities they also learn about conserving local ecosystems in the classroom, and then take what they have learned into natural splendor of the Ozark region.

WOLF goes beyond the traditional classroom setting offering students insights into a variety of ecosystems including, rivers, wetlands, forests, glades, caves, and prairies.

Results show that students in the program not only perform well academically they also develop a passion for learning. The impacts extend beyond academics and include intangibles such as improved self-confidence, teamwork, and an increased understanding of environmental issues.

This hands-on, place-based education is an ideal way to reach a generation of youth that has become increasingly disconnected from the natural world.

MBA Specialisation in Carbon Management at the London School of Business & Finance (LSBF)

Energime University: Changing the World with Sustainable Education

Energime University is the world's first scientist driven entity dedicated entirely to teaching sustainable global resource management (Energy, food, water, waste). This school is composed of a dedicated and passionate group of some of the world’s foremost scientists and educators. Energime University is embarking on an ambitious quest to educate the world and provide the essential skills to forge a more sustainable world.

Classes and courses will be offered and taught live and over the internet by the visionary scientists, inventors, integrators, and business experts. These forums will cover the newest and most innovative transformative technologies, operational protocols, and ground breaking projects now in development.

This visionary project is supported by over 150 doctorate level educators and sustainable technology pioneers. Energime is leading a collaborative effort which includes more than 400 tech and business development groups in over 140 countries in an attempt to bring structure and synergy to this global effort. The initial project will serve as a template and central site for what we hope will be hundreds of similar projects worldwide.

Energime University has three main goals:

1. Train students in the skills required to run this new sustainable infrastructure. These are people who will work in industries and factories to produce new technologies, and direct the advanced agriculture, farming, waste and water management protocols.

2. Offer a basic curriculum to the general population that clearly defines how each individual, household, business, and local government can adapt affordable changes that support this effort. This is the consumption part of the equation.

3. We must educate our business, governmental, and social leaders. They need to understand and implement the proper protocols and methodologies required to allow this process to go forward in a manner that is economically feasible and ultimately adaptable.

Energime University launch events will take place during May and June of 2014. It will include some of the world’s greatest “Green” inventors, educators, technology developers, engineers, students, investors, project developers, and civic leaders will be converging on Negril Jamaica to participate in 9 weeks of lectures, demonstrations, workshops and a film festival.

There will be themes for each of the 9 weeks (i.e. Solar/Wind/ Sustainable Agriculture/ Waste Management/ Water Management/Economic Modeling and Project Integration)
