Sustainable Learning Online: UNESCO's Young Masters Programme

In 2011 UNESCO inaugurated a global online education programme for 16–18 year-old students to learn about sustainability issues and solutions. The Young Masters Programme (YMP) is a free global web-based education and learning network about sustainable development. The programme is open for secondary students and their teachers from all over the world.

Extensive on-line teaching material gives the students a thorough understanding of sustainability issues and preventive environmental strategies. The students can also put their knowledge into practical use by starting sustainability projects in their local community.

The course material is in English with built-in glossaries and narrations. Close cooperation with scholars at Lund University, in Sweden, ensures that the content is up to date and in line with recent scientific findings. Challenging assignments inspire students and enhance their interest in the studies.

YMP was first initiated by the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE), at Lund University in 1999 and has since catered to more than 20 000 students from over 110 countries.

The internet is not only used to distribute the course, but to create virtual classrooms where teachers and students from all corners of the world are brought together to compare and discuss their results, share experiences and knowledge, and to receive and give feedback on their assignments. In the on-line community, students learn from each other by sharing first-hand information with their peers in different countries. They also gain an understanding of common sustainability challenges and different local perspectives and solutions. Together, students and teachers learn in a interactive way that textbooks do not allow.

Examples of past YMP work includes a group of students from China’s Gezhi High School who have found a way to harness the energy generated by exercise equipment in parks and residential areas. The group used a generator that can save the energy in a battery pack which can then be used to power LED lights. According to UNESCO, the clean energy produced entails an estimated reduction of carbon dioxide by 66 kg per year for each piece of exercise equipment.

15 Institutions Offering 50 Green Certificate Programs

There is a large and growing number of certificate programs that are designed to meet the demand for a wide range of green skills. Unlike many other sustainability oriented degrees these certificate programs are often less time intensive. While many of these certificate programs are part of traditional academic environments like universities and colleges, others are part of online educational settings and are tailored to the schedules of working professionals. Here are 15 institutions and a broad cross section of 50 green certificate programs that they offer:

Aquinas College has a Professional Certificate Program in Sustainable Business.
Anaheim University offers an Online Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Management.
San Diego State University College of Extended Studies offers professional Certificates in three sustainable areas: Green building, energy management and sustainable practices.
Irvine Valley College is a community college that offers Zero Waste certification for people seeking green jobs.
The European Energy Centre offers a course called Understanding Policies and Finances - Fast Track to a Renewable Energy Consultancy Job, which earns the successful student the internationally recognized Galileo Master Certificate
University of Vermont’s sustainability certificate programs teach students how to address such areas as reducing waste and conserving energy, water and other natural resources.
The Blue Planet Academy offers five green certificate programs: Agronomist, Electrical Engineer RES (Renewable Energy Sources), Environment Expert, Recyclist, Water Technologist.
The University of Washington’s Professional and Continuing Education department offers a certificate in Green IT.
The University of Washington offers a certificate in Sustainable Transportation.
The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) offers specific certification for PV installers, PV technical sales and solar heating installers.
There is also NABCEP certification for small wind installers.
The Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) provides training and certification for PV Installers. They offer three levels of certification: Apprentice, Specialist, and Technician.
ISSP offers a Sustainability Professionals Certificate.
Roof Integrated Solar Energy (RISE) offers a Certified Solar Roofing Professional (CSRP) credential for rooftop solar energy installation and maintenance.

On-Line Sustainability Training Opportunities from the SLC

The Sustainability Learning Centre's (SLC) new e-learning Sustainability Education Series has over 50, 15 minute modules that focus on Green Core Competencies. The 50 modules range from Sustainability Planning to Green Fleet and Supply Chain Management. Each module is 15 minutes, self-directed and complete with “tests for understanding”. Participants can gain recognition toward sustainability learning certification.

Each training module provides information and directions for facilitating and developing key sustainability initiatives. Many companies and human resource executives require certain methodologies for on line training and the series meets these requirements as the courses are SCORM compliant, is of the highest quality in design and includes narration, graphics, and superior tests for knowledge.

It also includes a discussion of all five phases in the GRI sustainability management/reporting process and a structural overview of the GRI Framework and Guidelines, with guidance for using principles, performance indicators and protocols. This course is designed for sustainability managers or team members who will be responsible for implementing management strategies or developing/contributing to sustainability reporting.

Karen Williams, Environmental Data & Information Management, The Dow Chemical Company Karen Williams serves as the Environmental Data and Information Management Leader for Dow Chemical. In this role Karen is responsible for the Product Management of Dow’s current suite of Environmental Reporting databases which include the Essential Suite Software. The team also provides support for the data systems that support Dow’s Global waste and emission data. She is responsible to ensure these databases continue to support Dow’s Environmental reporting needs and stay up to date with the changing regulations. She has been with Dow for over 26 years with 12 years in Manufacturing and Engineering and the last 14 years in Environmental Health and Safety. She holds a B.S in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech University.

Kevin Prouty, VP and Group Director Manufacturing Industry and Enterprise Applications, Aberdeen Group

At Aberdeen, Kevin's research coverage is Manufacturing and Enterprise Applications, as well as supporting Product Innovation and Supply Chain research. Before joining Aberdeen he was Director for Manufacturing Solutions at Infor. He also spent over five years as Sr. Director of Manufacturing Solutions at Motorola and was the resident expert on technology’s role in Lean. Prior to Motorola, he was Research Director for Manufacturing and Automotive at AMR Research and Gartner G2, where he spent a cumulative six years. Leading up to his research role, Kevin spent over 15 years as both a user and system integrator of production operations software. Twelve of those years were as a plant manager and project manager at a global manufacturer, managing a large workforce and business that produced tooling for automotive and industrial companies. He was responsible for all automation of the facility, including integration of automated process and information systems into all aspects of the business. In addition, Kevin helped lead the re-engineering team that implemented ERP and shop floor systems throughout the company. Kevin also managed the building, start up, and initial operation of a plant in China from 1992 to 1993.

Jeff Ladner, Senior Director – EHS & Sustainability Solutions, IHS
Jeff is responsible for managing the product roadmap for IHS enterprise software solutions that support efficient and accurate environmental, health, safety (EHS), product stewardship, risk management and sustainability reporting. Mr. Ladner has nearly two decades of experience directing the development of enterprise information management systems that efficiently manage environmental, carbon and energy management, risk management, product stewardship and corporate responsibility solutions. He has established a strong reputation for enabling corporations to develop and execute sustainability strategies through a holistic, integrated view of operational performance. Among his many professional achievements, he led a team effort to develop one of the industry’s first enterprise-wide, multimedia systems for EHS accounting and reporting.
